Left 'em years ago - sorry.
Unfortunately I am. You just click 'download file' when you open the email.
AOL is crap.
I don't just mean a little bit crap, or slightly annoying. I mean crap in the crappest sense of the word. Everything about AOL is rubbish. There are hundreds of little details that make it crap. There are loads of major points that make it crap. In short, it's crap, and I would recommend that no one use it, and if you are using it, you change as soon as you can. It's crap.
AOL email will automatically ZIP multiple attachments to an email, together. This doesn't really save on your download time, because they're pictures, and are probably compressed files by design. It just means more confusion and settings to play with for users that generally aren't that bright.
My parents have been on AOL for ten years. In 1996 there wasn't really much else around, but now that they've used it for so long, it's hard work to get them to move over.
Remember, it's crap! It's also expensive, and extremely limiting.

You forgot to say it's crap.

Back then, I was using CompuServe, which, whilst not great, was one of the good ones back then.
Can't argue with comments about AOL. I'm supprised no-one has used the phrase A******** OnLine yet....

If AOL is crap, then Compuserve was utter sh*te! If you wanted a proper email address, you had to pay more for it, otherwise you were just expected to accept 958744.4654894@compuserve.com. Idiots!
The only good thing AOL ever did was buy Compuserve, and shut it down.

I'm using AOL and can't complain.
I'm on the Broadband Silver 1MB Package for £9.99/month.
No download restrictions.
On average I download 80GB/month & up 2GB.
Just don't use their software. that's the trick.

Been on AOL for years and it's always worked and now at 8meg its very quick.
As Patrickuk said don't use their content or software and you should be OK.
I know there may be better providers but I've heard so many horror stories from other ISP's I'm gonna stick with the devil I know. (Plus I have heard it's almost impossible to cancel an AOL account)
As for the pictures for your aunt they should open automatically or if not save them to a folder or desk top as you would on most other ISP's.
BillyC,
If I put you forward for an AOL account I get £30 and we can share it and you will get a nice AOL account of your own.

No such package... the silver is £14.99/month, so maybe you were special.
Their support is terrible. It takes over an hour to talk to anyone about reporting a problem, and their Indian Call Centre monkeys want you to jump through all the little hoops to tick their boxes - it's a farce.
AOL also provides restrictions on the type of use of your internet connection. No port 25 for SMTP, it's blocked for all traffic. That's not an "unlimited" connection as far as I'm concerned!
Yes, the software is terrible, that's the biggest part, but there are other factors too.

deal was on for the last 2 months
£14.99 with a wireless router
or
£9.99/month without.
so no I'm not as special as you think.
at £9.99/month currently the best bang for the £.
say no more.

Here... Billy while we are at it, do you know what else is crap?
Windows. Everyone uses it. And its the standard platform to release software under.
But... its all of the above, its pox ridden beyond belief.
Just because something is crap, doesnt mean people wont use it.
