First 10 mins of that film is one of my surroundaroundasound favourites, the aircraft carrier stuff.

(At the risk of derailling the thread, other good surround sound moments are from Twister and Apollo 13.)

First 20 - 30 minutes of Saving Private Ryan are also good for this.

Cheesy dated gay crap, although the flying sequences and dogfights are very nice.

The continuity is rubbish as well.

And for anyone that reminises about how great and cool The A Team, Night Rider etc.
As much as I loved them as a kid, are also crap.

Magnum is still ace though.

Dives for cover to avoid the :smt068

New variants for the "Ride like....." sayings?

Ride like you have airbrakes

Ride like you are piloting an F-14

Number one rule in air combat is to avoid a dogfight unless you have no other choice (OK.. makes for a crap film!)
The F-14 is the only aircraft cleared to carry the AIM-54 Phoenix missile.. with a range in excess of 100+ miles... and the F-14 can shoot 6 of these in one go.. why the heck would you want to get to within Sidewinder range (5< miles) ?!?

If you are flying so close together that you can 'hit the brakes and he'll fly right by' and your cockpit isnt full of lead, or generaly you aint having a silk elevator ride to earth (parachute).. then the pilot who is up your **** is either a) blind or b) a very crap shot, and doesnt deserve to be in a fighter aircraft

Also, very big nit pick here.. Russian aircraft even back when Top Gun was made had one massive advantage over nearly all other aircraft if they ever got into a dogfight... most aircraft in those days had to get the bandit right infront of their aircraft to get a lock with an IR missile.... Russian Aircraft had HMS (helmet mounted sights) which means all he had to do was look at your aircraft with his head to get his IR missiles to lock on to you... thus the rule at the very top... avoid a dogfight.

not related to the film, but some useless info:
p.s. the F-14 is no longer in Service with the US Navy.. as someone thought it would be a good idea to now retire them all.... last country to still have F-14's in Service is currently.... Iran

p.s. I still like the film....

Blah blah blah ... what you failed to mention is that the Russian aircraft depicted in the film were actually very AMERICAN F5Es :) (I used to live near Alconbury and my dad was a plane nut!!)

Fighter aircraft yes. Not true with non-fighters & experimental ones though. *Plane Geek too*

Still my favourite film and sound track though....... we had the quotes on our computer for when we made errors "You're gonna do WHAT?!??!?!?!?"

Sukhoi are even more confusing.. Mig in general produce mainly military aircraft, and keep to the odd numbering as you said.. except for some of their newer stuff.. like the Mig 1.44

Sukhoi on the otherhand.. the SU-27 SU-30 SU-32 SU-33 SU-34 SU-35 SU-37 S.37(SU-47) are all big bloody military aircraft... now, what do you think the SU-29 is ?

Oooh can I answer, can I can I can I!?!?!?! :D

P.s. Love the Sukhoi too- the cobra strike etc...

the funny thing is.. most of those aircraft are the same ones, just with different designations.. which ended up being easier to just give them new names... like the SU-27M became the SU35, which became the SU-37 with thrust vectoring... which then got upgraded and changed slightly avionics wise, then turned into an SU-30M.... sort of version etc...

I'd love to see a Mig and SU-27 do the tail slide.. but I think I'll just wait until RIAT 2008.. when the F-22 comes to town

I pointed that out in an earlier post.... again, thats rather funny when you look at it... its being replaced by an aircraft which is much slower and cant go supersonic below 10,000ft for a start..... and is less powerfull all round really than what its replacing... but is cheaper.. ohh.. and the person who ordered the aircraft and canceled the F-14D is roumoured to have shares in Boeing

Ahh... cheers! :D
favorite has to be the Cobra hook manouver.... which is basicaly that, but instead of the nose dropping back town as it does there, it uses the thrust vectoring to continue putting the nose over, and does what is a 360 degree turn on the spot at that point..... dont have any of those videos available to me now, as they were on a game I had many years ago in the library section of it.. Janes games were cool for all the added stuff that came with them!

Did you have a look at it when it was parked up?? The American F-16 when you had a nose looked immaculate, everything was perfectly put together, painted and in place. The Sukhoi looked like someone had simply panel beaten it to shape!!! I am not sure if this was some sort of anti radar technique or something or if they simply don’t care about finish!!?
