View Full Version : More fuel for the north/south fire!
According to recent data, northern folk have a lower life expectancy, higher rate of heart disease and smoking related illness.
Men in the south live 5 years longer by average and women down south 2 years longer than their northern counterparts.

Life expectancy is closely related to lifestyle, but other social factors come into it like housing standards, poverty, environment, etc.
You'll find that the lowest life expectancy will be in the economically deprived areas, like "former mining towns", places where large employers like steel-works have closed and not been replaced.
The industrial revolution started in the north and that's where most of the heavy industry, cotton mills, etc were. No surprise then that most of the economically deprived areas are in the north and so life expectancy is lower.
None of the above explains why northern folk are the best in the world, though

because all the above is factual

Did you see the relationship with smoking? All north over average, all south apart from London below average. I HATE smoking, and they all deserve to die earlier if they smoke.
Fact.

Bit harsh, mate.
Anyone ask 'em why they smoke?

A bit harsh, even if i don't care much for smoking either. Would not like to wish illness on anyone though............................apart from Blair, Prescott, Brown et al. Sorry, i'm doing it again! #-o

As the above comment has clearly been written with due consideration to the feelings of all on this site I have provided a similarily considered response

hehe thought I might route out all the smokers here saying that  .
Of course I ask every single person I meet why they smoke. Responses vary from "always have", to "other people were doing it so I did too, now I am addicted" to "I only smoke while having a pint, I don't REALLY smoke", to "I am only smoking while I am young then I will stop later when it counts". I have never heard of "There is a man with a gun making me smoke", or "I am smoking to selflessly solve world poverty" or even "I smoke cos I believe it is good for me". Smoking is a personal choice that selfishly affects people around you, and anyone that gets upset about hearing they will probably die younger and is tempted to call me a T*sser is only doing so cos they are secretly angry with themselves about their problem.
If someone decides to end their life early; their choice. The moment their smoke gets in my lungs and in my eyes and in my clothes, I get properly angry. Where is the respect?! I had a woman in the Hard Rock Cafe ask me if she could sit at my table while I was chatting with my friends, so I offered her a seat politely in an attempt to give her some company seeing as she was on her own. She promptly lit up right next to me and just sat there with her smoke going in my face. I objected quite strongly to that.

heh heh. I wasn't tempted to call you a t*sser. I did call u a t*sser  ...........although I do hope that you noted that it was said somewhat tongue-in-cheek as i assumed that your initial post has been written in that manner also.
I am a smoker who does respect others personal air space. If you get in my car i will ask you if you mind me smoking. If you do mind then I will respect that......
....then drop you off at the nearest bus stop.
I dont smoke but this anti smoking lobbies arguments are rediculously short sighted (as suggested by Warthog)
They say you are invading other peoples personal space with thier smoke, your smoke in my lungs etc etc.
But using you (warthog) as an example. You pollute peoples airwaves with your noisy bike, you pollute peoples lungs with your dirty car. Both things are still legal, both you dont actually need to survive, nor are any of them good for you, nor has anyone forced you to use them.
Your more likely to die from smashing into a post while riding your bike than when your walking yet you still ride.
The arguments although different show how short sighted things are, by calling on other peoples selfishness you are bieng selfish yourself.
None of us are going to die in a flowery meadow with women dancing around us naked anyway, so why bother making a song and dance about someone who might be more at risk to lung cancer than you are.

I dont' think he does it in an enclosed public space.

Hehe yeah my first post was obviously slightly tongue-in-cheek, as wishing for a large percentage of the population to die is a tad extreme, but I'm afraid I read too much seriousness into your response, and smoking is somewhat of a bugbear of mine and off I went hehe.
As for Jp though, dear oh dear, me riding a bike is not remotely comparable. As Filipe said, if I revved my engine in a pub next to your face (interesting mental image  ), then possibly, but I can hardly walk 30 miles each way to work now can I? :) . If you are not a smoker, why call me "short-sighted" in not wanting to inhale other peoples smoke? :?
I live daan saaf and my in-laws live in North Yorkshire and I have to hold my hands up and admit that whatever the life expectancy is, they do seem happier oop norf.
It's just a generalisation and there are plenty of content people down here too but there's a noticeable difference between how friendlier people are in the north than they are in the south east. An example is shop staff saying good morning and smiling. That freaked me out at first!!
But the weather sucks even more than it does down here....
Btw, I'm a smoker and I know I'll probably die earlier as a result but damn life's boring enough as it is without having a nice mellow puff to chill once in a while. :smt033

I think that we still live in a 'free' country and it is my choice to smoke..........
for now!
Were to start?
as a northerner ( and i'm only speaking from my experience)
I was told you were an unfriendly bunch but with the exception of a couple of people i found that is not true but i do get the mickey taken out of my accent.
but everthing is far more expensive and i am finding I am working a 45.5 hour week compared to the 37.5 hour week i was putting in back home
still the weather is better (with the exception of the thunder storm we've had this morning)

Tara I think we now have your thunder storm. Thank you.
OK, in the old industrial cities there are of course areas of depravation. But generally the pace of life is a tad slower and quality of life far better than the competative south.
I went out last night for two pints on my way home. whilst my beer cost me £1.90 per pint, somebody popped in and asked did someone own a silver Vauxhall on the carpark as the lights had been left on. You would never get that in the south. In fact last time I was there I had my car broken into on a car park.
Where I live there is lots of fresh veg grown. Tara will tell you southerners of the size of the vegatable growing area between Ormskirk, southport, leyland. We have no excuse for not eating plent of fresh veg. Indeed the lamb chops I had for dinner at the weekend came from a farm 1 mile away. However, the supermarkets have taken over. It is easier to buy ready meals and expensive lank vegetables at 8 pm than to get up and go to the local farm shops and Chorley market etc.
As a family we try to eat healthily, a proper dinner at least 4 times a week. take aways limited to once a week. The real issue to me is exercise.
Why do rate payers build sports facilities and then have to pay to use them. My local private gyms work out about £70/month. For those on a tight budget it is impossible for them to afford this luxury. I can understand why the snob in me would not want the scum from the council estates having access to my locker room etc.
However, this does not preclude those who are priced out from taking their exercise in the fantastic countryside we have arround here. A stroll up Great Hill would take about 2 hours and burn off at least 200 calories I should think. Cycling cost nothing beyond the initial outlay for a bike, yet parents won't let their kids do it as it is far too dangerous.
Doctors should stop handing out pills and put patients on a course of exercise. Work hand in hand with the local gyms. People who would not go there out of choice would not have the excuse as they have been sent by the quack with a chitty for a course of exercise.

JP, you speak for yourself. I am going to die peacefully in a flowery meadow with at least two (very attractive) naked women dancing around me. :D Just not yet, I hope!
Bud, I agree from my experience that people 'up north' seem generally happier with their lot. Think it has a lot to do with the pace of life and general overcrowding of the South East.
