So is the clutter of metal really necessary?
"Yes," said Paul Watters of the AA Motoring Trust. "It's all about keeping the traffic moving. Most signs are serving a purpose."
Keeping traffic moving? What a joke. You'd have to pull up for five mins every mile just to read them all :?
they could put 1000 signs there and it wouldn't make a difference; drivers never look at road signs anyway.

I know that bit of the A3 and half of the signs in that picture are for the road that runs parallel to it, not the main road itself.
If road users were not so lazy at remembering/noticing the sign at the start of a restriction, or were too quick to blame the Highways Agency for not reminding them of something blindly obvious that is apparent from other road markings or indications, we would not need so many signs littering the roadside. If people were forced to be responsible for their own actions more often we would not need so many of these day-glo distractions. If you look where you're going when driving instead of texting/phoning your mate you would see the lump of shaped tarmac across your path and know it was a road hump - see the large building with ambulances parked outside it and know it was a hospital - see the crumbling building with small people smoking outside the gate and know it was a school.

Worst of all is Bus Lanes.
If they were all standardised it would be fine - I would know where I stand.
As it is, you need to read every one of them to see what the restrictions for the next 100 meters (they can change after every junction) and at £100 for getting it wrong, then its no wonder they dont get used - the risk is too high.
Best one is following a bus down the A23 between Brixton and Streatham where you have posters on the back of the bus telling everyone that isnt a cycle or taxi that its £100 quid if you are in the bus lane, while you are "undertaking" it in the bus lane which has a specific motorcycle permission on the signs.
My thoughs is that in the part of the bus-lane sign that depicts the lane, they should have a red or green light showing whether the lane is "open" or not.
Aparently at Greenford you can fail your bike test within 30 seconds by turning out of the layby they use, going right and NOT going into the bus lane if your test is before 4pm, or going into it if before 10am or after 4pm......

I know that section quite well
One gets used to processing large amounts of information, and quickly sifting out the priorities - in this case it's that large yellow square that means don't go over 50mph

Magic. You know most people would drive/ride through then think "Hey, that house is for sale. Wonder what the speed limit is?"
When you see it in person, does it appear like that? Quite a few of the signs seem to be set back, I think there's a second road behind that fence?
yes they must have closed the road, or taken a super zoom lens to line up that shot. as stated half of those signs are for the parallel road, but its a good picture to prove a point, I'm sure we all know places were theres too many signs.
Add to that the bloody stupid arrow marking on the A3 3 lane section that becomes slippery in rain, and you've got my other pet hate.
