View Full Version : camera van . . . damn
silly old me, riding at night on a quiet wide straight road.
thinking 75mph was a sensible speed to be doing.
silly me didnt notice the police camera van right til the last second,
thing is, single carageway, the camera van is on the left hand side of the road, rear windows facing me, and a grey box with a little lense on a tripod behind the van facing me.
think i saw a flash, but not sure, could have been another cars headlights.
what am i looking at ? 75ish in a 50 ?

If your lucky, 3 points and £60.
If the lens was pointing towards you how are they going to get your plate, unless the operator noted your reg number down you might be OK.

what if im unlucky fizzwheel ?
i thought the camera was normally in the van behind the windows,
or whenever i have seen them before, there much bigger than the one i saw tonite,
i think that the little grey camera thing was the actual speed camera, thought it might have been something else.

If your unlucky you'll get summonsed and have to go to court, which could be a bigger fine and more points or it could not. Depends on the judge. I dont really know as the times I've been done I've got an NIP through the post and its been 3 points and £60.
Everytime I've seen a scamera van, its been in the back pointing at me out of the back windows. Sometimes they have the camera on a tripod at the side of the road.
Best place to look is http://www.pepipoo.com/ theres loads of info and advice on there.
cool, ill have a gander,
cheers.
Front facing camera wouldn't get your number plate so you could be very lucky :?:

well i will know for certain in 14 days and let you know.
No experience of these things, but since it was at night I'd be inclined to want to see the photo.
They can and do take a note of bike numberplates after they pass apparently, but if the photo shows no identifying features (bike at night facing camera, headlight on, what will show up??) I might wonder if it's contestable. If it's based solely on someone seeing and writing down a number, I might be seeking some good legal advice (unless you want to own up anyway).
Just a thought. :-k

Can you remember what the camera looked like ? Was it a single unit on top of the tripod, or an "arrangement" sitting on a small "T" bar ?
The reason I ask is because it may have been an ANPRS set up rather than a speed camera. ANPRS checks the reg numbers of oncoming traffic against the tax/insurance/MOT databases.
.
I got caught speeding. Fair does. Advice please.
Or that's what I read anyway. Serious respect for not crying about it like the masses (not talking about the .org here).
All of it has been said above really. Front facing camera won't get your plate, so IF anything comes of it, it's because the operator wrote down your plate. IF they did that, it was dark, lights on, how much did the camera see?
The little tripod outside the van could be a little trick they use to stop glare. On some of the vans they have a glass/plastic cover over the camera. Put a flash inside this at night and you get a nice picture of a speedcamera! So on these vans, they put a little flasher unit outside the van.
As has also been said, it could of been the ANPR setup, but I'm not sure how reliable the ANPR's OCR systems are at night with headlights.
the little box was about 10 inches by 10 inches i recon and it was below my headheight on the motorcycle,
it was just a grey box with a lense and wires coming out of the back.
how do these speed traps record your speed at night ? i cant find much info at the moment on them, so am a little confused,
if they use an infra red camera, they wouldnt need a flash, but surely there wouldh have been some glare from inside the van, i doubt that thing on the tripod was big enough to give out a powerful beam of infra red light.
if they are thermal, they wouldnt be able to read your plate,
if there like a gatso, they wouldnt flash oncoming traffic surely and it would have been placed above head height.

well at the end of the day, im not gonna pretend i did nothing wrong,
i did.
i knew the law,
i chose to break it,
and im going to pay the consenquences.
ok, just want to check this.
so if the NIP hasnt arrived on my doorstep within 14 days, i am in the clear ?
or is it 14 WORKING days to arrive on my doorstep from the date of the offence ?
I'm sure it's 30 days!!! but they usually arrive within a fortnight!!
cant see how if they flash you from front, THEN write down the number cant prove its that bike! Without photo evidence..say it wasn't you

Front-facing cameras don't flash.
It's 14 calendar days starting from the first working day after the alleged offence. For you that will be Monday 30th October.
Remember, too, that its 14 days in which to post the NIP to the registered keeper, not 14 days for it to have arrived. If in doubt then try to keep the envelope with the post-mark intact as this is what the Courts will accept as evidenceas to the date of posting. The date on the letter inside might be a day or two earlier.

id rather not make things complicated and lie.
besides, if im caught, im guilty pretty much.

Warren, if it aint with you now, nothing can happen. The NIP HAS to be delivered within 14 days. No ifs, no buts, no other answers. Even first thing in the morning won't do it, just reply "OUTSIDE 14 DAYS, TOUGH LUCK!"
