I'm probably the only one who is interested, but I understand More 4 are showing this film this Wednesday @ 9pm. For those of you who don't know, it is a documentary of Metallica around the time they were recording their last album 'St. Anger' (incidentally, their worst album to date!)
If you have not seen it and you are a Metallica/Rock fan, it is worth a look.........for those of you without lives!

Is it any good? I went off metallica around the time of St Anger - i still like their older stuff (black album and before) but everything after that feels a bit...lame. You just know they can do better - specialy with ...And Justice For All among their discography.

Best metallica DVD?

Live S*** - Binge and Purge. Newstead is a god!

It is worth watching. Yeah, bit of a shame when Newstead was kicked out. They really should have involved him more in the 'creative process' !

It's more about relationships than the coolest band ever.

for a metallica (music) dvd get Live ****, Binge and Purge.

It's got a dvd of the Justice for All tour. When Metallica were still cool. You can see on hte tour for the black album - also on hte DVD box set - where it all went wrong.

FWIW: Worst Metallica album, IMHO, Load/Reload then the philharmonic rubbish.

Kinvig - the orchestra thing wasnt too bad. The load/reload thing was a pile of crap, with a scattering of good songs. Nothing is worse than st anger, unless the new album is super-mega-borrocks. There was a sneaky video on youtube a while ago where they played a new song live - kirk hammetts guitar solo's return, but it didnt sound as creative as some of his former work. Still, a guitar solo is a guitar solo, and in these days of crappy indie bands, you gotta take 'em whereever they come from!

So, everyones favorite metallica song?

Mine's a toss-up between Fade To Black and Through The Never

Through The Never

Matt

can't liasten to that song! Wrote my mother's golf off back in 1991 when I was 17 listening to that song.

Tough call: Battery or Blackened or anything from Ride....

Actually, it is either No Leaf Clover or Welcome Home, Sanitarium.
Kinvig, cant agree with you on S&M, while it does seem like a bit of a gimmick, the mixture actually works really well..........especially, No Leaf Clover!
Ok, perhaps Master of Puppets is on the list as well. #-o

Metallica are with out a shadow of a doubt the best band to ever grace this planet, and although i was really dissapointed with the film, its still well worth a watch, very interesting,
as for there albums, st anger, is defo there worst to date, the best being the live recording off of the live**** binge and purge box set, just because they are playing all the best old school songs that just kick absoulte ass, but being that they are newer live recording they have so much more feeling to them, in other words, its a better recording!!!

METALLICA!!!!!

Funnythe bits of Saint Anger that you hear in the studio sound magic in the film, but utterly rotten on CD... One of the worst production jobs ever, and obviously intentional too. "Lets see what it sounds like if we make the drums all sound like beer cans. Terrible! Uh oh, no undo key..."

Some kind of Monster shows quite clearly why St Anger is the worst Metallica album by far. Its a good watch, but it paints a terrible portrait of Metallica, especially Hetfield who was my hero until now. He is such an idiot, and poor Kirk gets trodden all over. Newstead was the only sensible one, he got out the moment it was all going tits up. Metallica are pathetic now, and they know it, seeing as they play solidly off Master of Puppets when they play live now and no St Anger songs!
Honestly, that bit where Mustaine is in therapy with them whining on how hard his life has been (what, playing in the second best thrash band ever? Poor you, ****) since getting kicked out of 'tallica is sickening. Bob Rock basically had huge dollar signs in his eyes, and was desperatly trying to get Metallica to make another album cos even if it sucks, a million people will buy it and he will make loads of cash. Bob ****.
Yes Metallica's decline into horsesh*t is another bugbear of mine.

Best songs for me are Creeping Death and Dyers Eve probably.

I agree that Metallica have sold out to a certain extent, but isn't that the way of the world. Name me a band that were half as successful as metallica and have not soldout somewhat.

I had the DVD, watched it then flogged it at a car boot sale this summer. Maybe Napster had a point?

I was with Metallica all the way in their fight against Napster. What Napster were doing was basically theft. Lets face it, most bands are in it to make money, why should some spotty little computer geeks benefit from their work?

Metallica are my favorite band but when i went to see them at Leeds festival a few years ago they were sh*te. We'd travelled for hours so everyone was tired but really excited at the prospect of actually seeing them. They kept us waiting for half an hour, then when they actually came out they played mostly off of the St.Anger album which hardly anyone knew and i think it's safe to say that even though i still bought the album...i've listened to it a total of ONCE. I still love them but for their old stuff.
Didn't bother watching the movie.
Fav song: Enter Sandman
Worst song: I can't possibly choose between the songs off of St.Anger!

I do not recomend people watch some kind of monster 2 hrs ish of Lars and James argueing, didn't impress me at all and on the tail of they're wrost album to date I can't even remember if the was a decent live performance in the film.
You can see why Jason left. Kirk Hammet seams a chilled out guy and the best one in the band in my opinion.
Metallicas got to come back soon with a good album.

 newsted did a good job replacing cliff....but the new guy rob trujillo dose not suit the band, he was great in suicidal tendencies (my first ever gig) & ok with ozzy

they will never be as good as the first 4-5 albums

Maybe I'm getting old, but I thought S&M was the best thing they've done since 1991... Rob Trujilloliololalo did a good job when they played Glasgow too, he's not a Newstead replacement (and Newstead wasn't a Burton replacement) but I thought he fit well regardless.

Yeah, but they did the job differently. Zakk Wylde wasn't a Randy Rhoads replacement, but Edd the Duck was a Gordon the Gopher replacement, see?

Godon the Gopher owns Ed the Duck.

Fact.

I sort of lost touch with Metallica after the Justice album. I've recently picked up a couple of albums, including St Anger, but they don't impress me. As far as I'm concerned Rde the Lightening was their best work. It represented a big step forward from Kill, but still had that raw, original edge.

As for favourite tracks? So many to choose from, but I'd narrow it down to these four.

Whiplash
Ride the Lightening
Trapped Under Ice
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)

I haven't seen Monster yet, but it is on my list of things to watch.

Jason Newstead is an awesome player live with a massive stage presence - one of hte biggest influences in my own playing. One of the only players I know of that could replace JN was Robert Trujillo.

Trujillo's work with Suicidal Tendancies, Infectious Grooves, and live stuff with Ozzy and Black Label Society is brilliant.

I think Newstead got out / got sacked at the right time. Trujillo should have stayed with Ozzy though. Newstead should have stayed away from Rockstar - Supernova too.

However, as far as the Justice album goes - it may have some good tracks, but its production is absolutely soul destroying. Where is the bass? Newstead got seriously stomped on when that was mixed. Being a bass player, its depressing to hear it.

St Anger - hmmmm. Rubbish songs, rubbish production, no solos. Still waiting for Lars to return my bin lid he used to replace his snare. Git.
