View Full Version : Another menace off the road

I am now the not-so-proud owner of a 28 day driving ban. The fine and costs only came to £170 so I suppose I got off lightly on that front.

Not exactly looking forward to being a pedestrian but at least I'm not missing out on the best biking weather.

Sorry to hear it buddy. If I were you I might think twice about posting what you did. Unless you want the safety brigade on yer case forever and a day! Because of course they all adhere to every speed limit at all times. Yes, I'm up for a fight today.

Will you have to do another test to get back on the road? That sucks dude.

my Mum's a magistrate and I seem to recall her saying most bans are much longer than 4 weeks. Sounds like you got off lightly whatever you did.

T'was 100 in an NSL so the result wasn't unexpected.

Be careful if you like to ride around North Yorkshire, especially on a Sunday.

Bad luck mate. Oh well, I guess you'll have to start the count down. I hope the insurance companies don't sting you too much.

Unlucky dude. Some of us were well guilty last sunday in Yorkshire.

I thought getting banned in yorkshire was restricted to the likes of GYKD.

Already let them know and they said it won't have any effect untill renewal, I was having nightmares about them instantly cancelling insurance leaving me with no theft cover.

I've had 6 years riding at these kinds of speeds with only 3 points to show so I guess it was coming but it has made me think about when and where to ride.

I'm thinking more trackdays and foreign trips and never going on popular biking roads on a Sunday.

Which road were you in in North Yorks? (Wopuld be usefuil local info for the future).

Saw an Aprilia rider stopped on the way up to Wensleydale from Masham, felt quite fortunate as I'd been following him in the cage (first time out, pretty exciting) but got held up in traffic.

Track days are defo the way to go to let rip, my road riding and my track riding are so removed from each other it is surreal, I'd never attempt what I try on track on the road.

Between Settle and Hawes via Ribblehead (where there viaduct is).

Especially gutting as this is favourite stretch of road.

Guess i'll have to sneek up there on a weekday morning next summer.

Oh come on not that old buncum. We need more coppers and less cameras. At least coppers have discretion. Many forces have cut down on their traffic forces to the detriment of road safety.

Remember when the idiots pull out on you. The drunk drivers try to wipe you out. Or the kids in micras with big bore exhausts and a spliff in their hands that they can do it because the goverment reacted to public demand and pulled the coppers out of policing the roads to go catch burglars and rapists.

Yep... Cameras don't bother me, it's the way some forces abused them to cut down on traffic patrols. Ridiculous, they're no substitute, and since they're self supporting there's no excuse for diverting funds.

Sorry to hear about this. What sort of NSL (dual carriageway/motorway/single lane A road/what) was it BTW?

Razor

Bad luck that man. Sundays are crap for the popular roads, I prefer Saturdays when all the born agains/coppers are in homebase/tesco with the missus. The best days for a quick blast must be match days and when the world cup was on ;)

The road Settle to Hawes via Ribblehead is what we rode on the North South and again this Sunday. It is A road but cross country. about 3 villages with 30mph but generaly NSL for about 20 miles. Settle to Ribblehead is narrow with a single lane in each direction with some dry stone walling and from the Ribblehead onwards is more open as in larger grass verges and better visablity but still very fast roads. surface is generally good for this area.

TBH the police do love this section of road as it is a licence to print money as the road screams to be ridden hard.

Biggest problem is the tourists getting in the way.

ITS IN YOUR HANDS - for me it wasnt (health) :( - when you get it back (and to everybody who still has theirs) enjoy it - its a privilege not a right - its better to be on the road being restricted (even if you disagree with the restrictions they place upon us) than not at all - I sure missed mine I can tell you (and Ive never even had a point on my licence) and now I have it back I respect it more than ever :notworthy: :) .

Lecture over  :D

badluck dude, I was with Tim on Sunday as well as a few others riding that very road. I had a plain clothed police escort most of the way till the Settle fuel stop then we parted company.

Thanks!

NSL means playtime.

that lovely white circle with a black line through it.

just out of interest, how many points did you get for it ?
was it a camera that caught you, or plod ?

do you have to retake your test again after a ban ?

Shame you got caught in NSL (National Speed Limit), it's nothing that most of us haven't done from time to time, if we get really bad weather then the ban won't feel too long.

I don't think we need to be having a pop at the Police, just for doing their job, if they caught a biker for doing over a ton, and it turned out the bike was nicked we would all be saying "well done, castrate the theiving scum". I would much prefer to see more traffic cops and the cameras placed where they are needed, outside schools for instance.

Unlucky mate.

There was a couple of occasions on the North/South when I was doing over twice the NSL - and still got overtaken by Baldyman on his 'bird!

Cracking roads around there that everyone should thrash at least once.

There is a mobile camera site just up the road from me, on Longden Road, Shrewsbury, about 50 yards down from the entrance to Meole Brace school.

The camera van is never there on school days when the kids are going to or coming out of school. Why? Because the road is lined with parked cars with people doing the school run, and the camera view would be blocked.

So instead they are there almost every Saturday morning, from 8.30am to 2pm.

All the locals know this so surprise surprise everyone watches their speed like a hawk, except of course for people who don't know the van timetable. But Saturday afternoon's a different matter.

Just the ban, hoping my license comes back as it went: clean. (apart from the ban of course).

It was a police officer but I wasn't pulled over at the time, sent an NIP in the post.

I previously posted about being sure i'd slowed down enough for the copper. Well I did for the marked Subaru parked in a lay by. Unfortunately the officer that caught me was stationed half a mile up the road, completely hidden, I assume behind a dry stone wall.

Like I said, be careful!

Bad luck mate, most of us have abused speed limits, and I like your attitude about it too, taking it on the chin, good man. If you cant't do the time and all that...

I'm also very pleased that as from today I'm back down to 3 points.... (just 2 years to go on that one  )

I would much prefer to see more traffic cops and the cameras placed where they are needed, outside schools for instance.

Suprisingly, relatively few people (according to DfT statistics) get killed or seriously injured outside schools when compared to other areas. The proportion is something like 0.4% of total KSI.

A camera is possibly also the last thing you'd want to be dealing with when there are hundreds of kids running amok outside the school gates. Considering most schools are situated in 20 or 30 mph limits, the resultant congestion means speed cameras are probably unneccessary due to natural speed regulation.

Engineering improvements have also taken out most of the danger; for instance safety barriers outside the main entrances preventing people running out, and regulated pedestrian/zebra crossings.

I would say Police resources are better suited to other areas, like Motorways and A-roads, where bad driving is rife and has the potential to induce far serious consequences if an incident occurs due to the higher speeds.
