Well I went with the full Humpback rig - and my tent and sleeping bag SHOULD bungee to the top of the panniers/sides of the tailpack - or if I don't need the tailpack.

Looks a little like this:

Oxford sports tankbag (expandable to 40l), and a 60l hiking rugsack does me just fine.

Our car is off the road (well, going in the garage today after I temp bodged it), and almost managed a full weekly shop using the bike.

It's not a matter of how big it is, it's more how you use it (or so I'm told )

With carrying stuff on bikes, you sometimes need to get "inventive". On the weekend, I carried an (assembled) rear paddock stand, spare rear tyre, haynes manual and a reel of duct tape, all just using duct tape to secure it. :D

If your bike is primarily for fun (rather than your main transport), I'd go the soft luggage route. You should be able to get a full set of oxford "first time" luggage for about £80 if you shop around. This includes tailpack, expandable tank bag and panniers, plus storm covers. The build quality is fine for occassional use, but if you think you're going to be using it a lot, it might be worth spending a bit more and getting something that'll last longer. With carrying a tent (and even a camping chair!) I normally carry it width wise at the back of the bike, behind the tailpack and on top of the panniers. Bungee it in place then duct tape it down for good measure.

Lol - that was just for a weekend away to Sheffield :P

Wasn't sure what to wear on the road - didn't want to wear my leathers to work, so leathers bottoms in the left pannier, jacket in the right (without having to expand the panniers....) Then my clothes (overpacked as usual but wasn't sure how soaked I was going to get so a few spare t-shirts etc. Tank-bag had my locks, spare gloves and a few other bits an pieces - was mostly empty.

Got my mate to bring my leathers back in the panniers in his car tho :) so way back was just tankbag and tailpack

I got a Renntec sportsrack for mine, it bolts on where the grabrail goes and makes it easy to carry pretty much anything. (pair of SV wheels, air compressor, 3 35-litre storage boxes, etc) For the AR I put my tent and mat across the rack and everything else in a tailpack, that's all you really need for a weekend. Oh, and I had my tiny tankbag as well, but it only holds about 2 cans of coke, my mobile and my wallet :) If you get an oldschool massive sleeping bag that won't be so easy though.

Or you could do what Lynw did and stay in a b&b, but the campsite was good fun.

Oxford Sports tankbag and an Oxford Sports tailpack. I've got panniers as well, but they dont fit well on the GSXR, so I dont tend to use them.

For the AR I had tent, sleeping bags, thermorest, my own and Liz's clothes for an entire weekend. I bungee'd some stuff across the top of the tailpack all was fine.

I think sometimes people carry to much stuff. You have to be ruthless when your packing only take what you need, not what you think you might need. I'm getting better at it now. So we dont carry as much stuff with us as we used to.

Packing a little early for AR07 aren't you Hovi5 :)

I'd go for the tankbag and tailpack combo, panniers can be a problem.

19" LCD box and a tailpack, courtesy of a bungee net (and riding even slower than usual over bumps, and stopping every mile to check for alignment over the seat...).

Crappy telephone photo too, taken with very dim lighting.
