View Full Version : Woohoo!! Running in time is over!
Yep, 1007 miles on the clock means I'm no longer restricted to a piddly 10,000 revs

Exxxcellent 8)
Piddly? What's the redline on a IL4?
Somewhere around the 16000 mark IIRC.
Good news on the run in, keep it safe :)

dear oh dear oh dear. And you only got to ride it when it was limited to 8,000 revs.

Yay! Now you can see what she can do. Just be careful though eh.
Enjoy and be safe. :)

18,000 rpm, not sure that would be much use in the South East of England!
Despite bike magazine voting the R6 their 'bike of the year' last year, this months issue tells of them 'falling out of love' with it due to its high revving nature making it a real drag on everyday roads.
Must be getting old as im not sure that i could bring myself to rev anything over about 12k.
Lovely looking bike though and im sure great fun on a race track.
I wouldn't know about the R6, never ridden one. My bike is used for commuting and for pleasure and its sweet to ride. Commuting is not a chore although the M25 can get a little boring. I particularly like the way it pulls from any gear so you have the choice of pootling along in 6th at 30mph or 60mph in 1st.

Force yourself. There's fun to be had right up there. Yeehaa!
Lucky you Kate, if all goes to plan I have to start running in over the weekend :( Hopefully it won't be too long and painfull. I remember my SV was good for 70mph max at 5000 rpm for the first 500 miles, then up to 93mph max at 7000 rpm for the following 500. Thats no too bad. I hope tthe new one is along similar speeds (or more  )

I don't do the usual recommendations for running in. I do the quick version. 100 miles of slow and steady, using the rev range getting higher in each gear each time (but not redlining) and using a lot of engine breaking too. Once your 100 miles is done ride as normal. I'm sure there was a whole thread on it, although not much use to you now Kate seeing as you've already done the running in. Anyway, something to think about.

New pointies are as follows
0-500 Miles 5.5K limit (70-75mph)
501-1000 Miles 8.5k limit (no idea)
Mine now has 1250 miles on it so no needs to worry about revs :)

Yep, considered this approach but from what I've found out is that it tends to lead to bike problems later down the line. As long as you don't have the bike later on, its fine to do that, well, for you anyway. Poor sod who ends up with your bike though.
I figured its best just be patient (really really not my strong point) and run it in properly. *shrug*

Beenz has a new Gixxer thou (lucky sod), but that's interesting that they raised the engine speeds on the new SV's

Hmm, there seems to be lots of stuff about on the net supporting this new way of running in. And there were some extensive tests that prove it actually makes the engine last longer as the pistons and other components get a much better seal when bedding in. I've never had any probs with a bike using this method and I do a lot of miles and I've never heard of any probs using the new way either. I think problems could arise when peoepl think they can thrash the **** off their new bike from the get go. then you are asking for problems. But each to their own. The age old manufacturers recommendations have been the same way for years, and they keep it this way 'just in case'. Modern engines are much more capable.
There was a interesting article in Ride about running in a bike yonks ago. One of the testers got his long-termer ZX6R and ran it in using a rolling road dyno. Apparently it made good power from manufacturer's figures and only took a few(??) hours.

We are indeed talking about one of those, and not yet as I've been a good girl and have followed the rules of not going above 10k under the first 1000 miles.
Give me oh, 20 minutes and I'll have a go

Kate, As a side issue how long did it take for you to run it in. I took about 4 days to run in my SV when I bought it and part of the deal was to have it serviced in 7 days from purchase
Not so much a de-rail more a shunt up a siding
