View Full Version : Just passed my test today!!!
Had an SV waiting for three weeks for me to pass. Today, on my first test I did it. I only had lessons two days previous.
After all that it's been chucking it down all day, so I went out anyway and put 60 cautious miles on her. I have no riding experience and am very scared about leaning over too far, especially in the wet. Also going round tight corners in housing estates is a drag.
Help me out. How quick should i be progressing to lean over? Should I just let it come naturally over time or be adventurous in the dry? Bearing in mind my experience.
Hello all members and I look forward to being part of the SV community!!
:D
Congratulations mate..

Beers are on you then!!!

Oh, and welcome to the madhouse! :smt119 LOL i said it first, do I win a prize??
Hi Baz - well done on passing and welcome to the site. You cant beat experience = miles ridden through various road conditions.
Welcome & congratulations.
I was pretty inexperienced when I started out on the SV. Like others have said, just take your time.
I found that I quickly got used to the cornering, and was starting to hang off. Then the grip went in the back tyre & I lost all confidence.
I'm still working on getting that back. It just takes a lot of positive re-enforcement, but things started coming back together on my commute into work this morning.
Well done young Baz. Fit some crash bungs to the SV won't you.
Good work fella :drink:
Take it easy, it'll come in time.
Oh n welcome :smt026
Congratulations Baz, i'm jealous of you!

Well done Baz!
I'd say let it come naturlay and goe with you gut feel as opposed to anything else. you'll probably feel like youre about to get your knee down to start with but will actualy be only a very little way over.
The chicken strips* will tell you the full story after a ride.
*chicken strip- the unused part of the tyre toward the edge. Click this (http://forums.sv650.org/viewtopic.php?t=36051)

I had forgotten about that thread - might have to get the camera out over the weekend and revive it!

Well done - enjoy your SV 8) :D
I assume you know about scrubbing in tyres? Now that you've put a few mile son them you needn't worry so much, but just be a little careful about tipping into corners.
Have fun on it and well done. :)
Good stuff mister
Take it easy eh :D

Well bloody done on passing your test!
As for gaining confidence...
...get a motorcross bike, and indulge in some muddy fun this winter. Or, if you dont have enough money to buy something (i'll assume you dont, very few people are made of money) then just take it easy on the SV. Find a local windy road that you can get to easily, and ride it enough to memorise it. Then, once you know where your going, you can up the speed and find your limits, and the limits of the bike. Take it steady and safe, and after each ride have a little think about how it can all be improved. The bike will lean alot further than you think, aslong as your smooth and relaxed!
Matt
Well done on passing your test.
=D> well done
what SV have you got
Congrats.
From my experience (I passed with a crash course having never ridden before) just take it easy - it'll come with time. Wear decent gear in case, and hope you waste your money never using it.
Relax, have fun and welcome.

Oh and remember you're not Bayliss / Valentino :) (Yet at least  )
Nice to meet you all 'virtually'. Thanks for the advice. To answer two questions i'm from Guisborough in cleveland and it's a 650. Just going out for the second time for a nice ride, this time the sun is shining. I'll take it slow like you say and look forward to meeting you guys for real some day!

Well done Baz.
Like some others have said, get some crash bungs fitted.
Worry about keeping it upright before you worry about leaning it over!
Enjoy!
