i am sure it has been covered many a time b4 but just wondering what people use to clean up there chain,
up till now i have been using the same technique as my m8 has been 4 years,

1) remove back wheel,
2) get a bucket of paraffin
3) run the chain thru the paraffin and scrub hard with a tooth brush!
4) once clean make sure all the paraffin has been removed.
5) repeat with sprocket.
6) put wheel back on!!!

what are other peoples, techniques?
the onlt thing i can think of to make better it using something better than an old tooth brush!!! like a wire brush or something but dont know if a wire brush might be a bad idea to use on the chain!!!!!

Don't use a wire brush you'll damage the O/X rings I use paraffin and a tooth brush too just let the chain soak in the paraffin for longer!!!

Dunno if it is any good or not, but I'm looking to invest in one of these:

I've got one of those - cleans the chain really well, but quite messy. It's worth it, but only if you got some newspaper to put down first. I don't use it to lube my chain though....

yeah i did think that is would not be good for the chain but was not 100% sure!

Cheers Caddy

That was my thinking, buy it to clean the chain, rather than use it to oil it. Oiling is a simple job, but cleaning ain't

Fitt scottoiler.................

Alternativly use a rear paddock stand / abba / NWS stand and don't bother removing the wheel, just turn it and scrub the chain with parafin, toothbrush and a rag, leave for 10min and then re-lube.

Right, 'Silly question' time folks; I've been told that diesel fuel is just as good as paraffin/kerosene as it's a derivative of (or they are a derivative of) each other. Is this true? As I did clean an old chain in a rag soaked with diesel and it seemed to do the trick! I made sure that most of the diesel came off the chain, and then lubed it thoroughly. Is there any chance of damaging the rubber O-rings this way?

WD40 isn't the nicest of substances to use - esp with O rings (as has been covered in several other threads). Personally not too fussed about the cleanliness of my sprocket, but I just use parafin on my chain and have had no problems.

Diesel is very close to parafin, so you can use it yes, but what's cheaper?
