All,

I am attempting to remove the bar through the engine to fix some crash bungs. However I feel this was either done up by an over-zealous robot in Japan or some super-human mechanic with a scaffold pole extension to his socket set. I've put a long bar on my half inch socket set, but eventually the socket slipped a bit so I have stopped before I completely round off the nut.

I'm hoping that if I use a six sided socket rather than a 12 cornered socket I'll be able to add a bit more grunt without killing the nut.

So in short, does anyone have a 17mm half inch drive 6 sided socket that I could borrow or live local(ish) to Fleet and prepared to have me pop over and have a joint grunt at my nut (waits for bawdy comments).

And if any of you time served experts have taken this bolt out before can you please confirm that I do not need to do anything else before removing it and that the nut side rather than the bolt side it the right end to be leaning on.

Thanks in advance,
Mark

I removed the engine bar for my R&G's. I don't have a socket set on me. Advice though...

Best thing to do is to have someone else on the other side of the bike with a 2nd socket to hold onto the bolt while you undo the nut. If you don't after you loosen the nut a bit, all that happens is the bar spins around.

Got a 17inch socket but dont think ive got a 6 sided job, I'll have to check it out and get back to you. Also got a breaker bar with scaffold extension

Failing that get the air gun on it

Good thought - your local tyre shop will probably loosen it for you.

I should be able to help, I've had the engine out on my SV and my sockets managed the job ok .

I live in Guildford, so if you wanna pop round give me a buzz on 07738 718 228

Cheers guys. Managed to buy a single 17mm six sided socket in a local tool shop. will add extra grunt and see what happens. If not will probably have to get the nut drilled off or more likely find a pretty 17mm cover to hide the mangled nut and make out I never wanted crash bungs anyway.

The joys of having your own compressor
