View Full Version : MOT prices are on the up
As from November;
Cars £50.75
bikes £27.15
Yet another "Stealth" tax. It sickens me and makes me angry to think that we can do nothing to stop it.

What was it before? Also typical as my first MOT is on Saturday.
Nuts, better save money by getting a new bike every 3 years then. :)

i don't actually mind the MOT so much, after all you want to keep your bike safe right? even if some people will say they don't do it properly, in my mind it's better than nothing, and it's even better that they do at least limit its cost.
road tax, on the other hand...

It was about 17 quid... then went up to about 23... and looks like its changed again.

It's not the MOT that bothers me, it's the fact that there is a set price for it that keeps on going up. After all if you're not happy with the cost of servicing you can go elsewhere, not an option with a goverment set price is it?
(Or do I have that wrong?)
With the increase of regulatory stuff that has gone into carrying out MOT's recently at least I can kinda see what the higher costs have gone towards.
It's also not the dodgy money spinner that it used to be for garages either - well, not in the sense that it used to be possible to MOT a vehicle in under 20 minutes - so they could stack'em n rack'em.
Now the DVLA-linked computer that all the details have to be entered onto has a minimum test time - so it's impossible to complete the MOT and get the certificate in under (I believe) 45 minutes. So garages can now only book in so many into a working day - and short of blatently sitting on their arses doing nothing, the mechanics are more likely to actually get on and do it right.

Has the price gone up today? or do we have a few days to rush it in?

Not so sure about that. I think the new system which is VOSAs not DVLAs ties the MOT down to half an hour maximum time to do the MOT. But maybe the 45 mins is for cars, the 30 for bikes. But certainly the guys doing mine said its half hour on the system.
But of course they dont make it easy to find this on the VOSA site  Theres bits talking about average test times and what you pay if it exceeds that but nothing I can easily find on this sloooooooow link to say what the times are. :? But I do recall the guys saying they had half hour from book in to print certificate on the two they have done for me.
Stu - it seems to be 7th November the charges are applied. http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosacorp/publications/leafletsandposters/vehicletestingleaflets.htm lists the leaflets & posters and suggests the new poster of fees is applicable from 7th.

Did my car yesterday, didn't realise the price was going up, I thought £42 was steep as it was.
i dont mind. i have loads of money anyway, more money than i care to count.

I believe all we can hope for now is a massive campaign of civil disobedience. Although it might be too late... but no-one forced 36% of the electorate to vote for Tony 'Robbing Bast*rd' Blair.

Whats an MOT ? :smt102
Typical! My car is being MOT'd on the 7th
At the garage where i work its currently £40 for a car and £20 for a bike.
Must admit its kinda good having it all computerised as it also tells us if the vechicle is an insurance write off, and if so, which category it was.

This is a maximum fee, not a mandatory fee. Please folks, get a grip... This is in place to stop garages overcharging you, not to force you to pay extra.
With cars, the maximum went to £44.15 on the 1st August 2004. So it's a £6.15 rise over 2 years, 7% in other words- not that much above inflation. Likewise bikes. Forgive me if I don't rush into the streets with a pitchfork.
If you want to look at it a different way, in real terms the price went down last year, as the maximum remained fixed but the value of that £44.15 fell by about 3%.
