Downloading films is bad mkay

Everytime you download a film, George Lucas makes a Prequel to Star Wars.

Also Illegal and Likely to get you locked up

Sorry Mate, but cant help you here....

The line is that it's not theft it's copying and in legal terms it's copyright infringement but...

You wouldn't steal a car...
You wouldn't pimp a ho...
You wouldn't commit copyright infringement against a multi-billion dollar levaiathon

...doesn't have quite the same impact so they call it stealing for the adverts.

Also bike theft is crime against the person and copying a file is not.

Yes, theft taking something without the owners permission, i.e. walking into hmv and taking the dvd off the shelf. It physical and a physical cost attributed with it, i.e. media, etc... hmv would of bought the dvd off a supplier etc....So they will have lost money over a theft.

However, this is copyright infringement which is not theft (No matter how hard the studios try to tell you otherwise), because nothing has been physically stolen. A digital copy has been made, but no one in the chain has made a loss because of this. However, there is a potential for loss if you would of otherwise bought the film.

2 things are killing the film industry.

Differing Release dates and Expense.

By releasing things, sometimes months apart (I have seen films available on DVD in the US before they were released here in the UK in the past)

Also the cost of cinemas (commented on in the thread earlier this week about which film to watch)

This is why if you go down the street in Brixton, you will get people offering you DVD's of "new" films, because a poor quality affordable film is better than an expensive cinema trip (think of a family of 4 going to see the latest Disney epic)

For me, if there is a film that looks interesting, but not that interesting I will often wait for the DVD - in the end it costs the same as the cinema if you are talking about a couple, never mind a family.

Now if they were to release a movie on a Thursday, then release a limited DVD the following Thursday (limited in that it is EXACTLY what you would get at the cinema - trailers, ads, movie, not extra making-ofs etc) for £10 then piracy would die.

Anyone who wanted the movie could buy a guaranteed quality product to take home, and at £10, the pirates selling crap quality couldn't really make a profit.

The Cinemas wouldnt lose much business as I dont care how much you have spent on your home cinema, its not the same as going to a cinema.

The damage that downloading movies does is that people download the movie, watch a poor quality version (so special effects etc dont really work) but get to see that the movie is NOT worth watching, so DONT go and see it - mobile phones have the same effect as people leave bad movies and phone their friends, warning them away.

Oh the other killer of cinemas - people who think its an extension of their living room and that they can chat, use mobile phones and generally be anti-social.

I still like the cinema, but not THAT many films are worth the cost....

Reason I have only been to the cinema twice in the last 7 years is because they suck. You often choose the crappy seats where the sound is 'all wrong' and you step on popcorn all the time. Then there's idiots who insist on talking throughout.

£250 projector, £200 on amp and speakers in the comfort of my own home. 8) For me, it would be 'others' (that you mention) that are making cinemas appear unappealing to me. But then again...watch it in my own place or travel 10 miles and probably queue for a bit and then buy overpriced goods....home cinema always wins. :(

I'm selling my projector for £250, bought it for £310 and used it for about 500-1000 hours. How much does a cinema ticket cost? It's not jsut films either, ps2 anything really.

to be honest, the quality of sound is much better in my bedroom than at a cinema.

strange, anyone ever watched a pirate DVD and found it much better than the original ?

i watched lock stock on pirate, and the picture had a brown tint to it, it made it look really seedy and dodgy, much like the film,

then i got V for Vendetta, it was really dark and with high amounts of contrast, hiding the crappy special effects, making them look more realistic. so all you got was a kick ass story line.

when i bought them both on DVD cos i liked the films, i was disappointed.

give me the pirate any day :)

Damn straight. I spent many, many thousands £££'s on CD's specificaly because Howard Stableford told us we could spread jam on them, use them as frisbies or stick them where the sun don't shine and they'd still work fine.

I think my CD's must have severe emotional issues because if I so much as look at them the wrong way they start to self harm and refuse to play anymore. This wouldn't be so bad if the record companys followed through their logic and offered you a replacement at production cost (after all you've already payed for the copyright) but of course they would never do that so **** them.

Also :smt041 for home cinema. I rarely go to the cinema since I moved out of London (where at least there were some interesting cinemas) the only place close is a soulless multiplex where they charge you a fortune for a rubbish seat surrounded by Essex's finest :smt093 I'll stick with my projector and a fridge full of beer & pizza thanks.

"This followed a 1984 Supreme Court decision on Sony's Betamax video recorder. Sony had been accused of infringing TV and movie studios' copyrights. But Sony won that case because the machine had significant non-infringing uses. since recording a TV programme to watch it later, known as 'time-shifting,' was deemed to be a fair use."

OK two points the Betamax case is US law and not UK law and the ruling was that the manafacturer (Sony) could not be held accountable if the user used it for illegal (taping TV shows) purposes rather than legal (transfering home movies)

It is still illegal to record and keep tv shows under UK law with one or two expections (like SKY+)

Actually your argument is a little bit flawed. It is irrelevant if lukemillar has or hasn't copied to tape if he has bought the Cds in the first place.

What this thread was about was copying something when you haven't actually paid for a legal copy in the first place. THAT is illegal - making a personal copy of something you have paid for ISN'T. Provided you keep it personal and don't share it thats legally fine.

PS. I have 1885 mp3s and growing on my hard disk. And all of them are legal backups of my CDs that I can use if my damn cousin gets hold of any more of my CDs and scratches them to buggery again.

PPS If you think counterfeiting isnt a big deal, lets just hope you never get any counterfeited pharmaceuticals. These could have a serious impact on your health either by being completely ineffective or by containing dangerous ingredients. This is the problem, once you start saying counterfeiting is ok on one thing it gives licence for the counterfeiters to fake other things and it becomes a bigger issue. But I guess thats outside peoples considerations as long as it doesnt hurt them - until then its seemingly ok until that happens. :?
