I've got a Dell Dimension 5150 with a SATA hard drive and I want to install a second one. The drive power cable extends from the first one to a second connector so will plug into the second. The data cable does not. Do I get a cable with two connectors or do I need a second, single ended cable running to the other SATA connector on the motherboard?

While we're at it, the best price I have is about £48 for a 250GB SATA drive (Samsung or Seagate). That was at Scan.co.uk in Bolton (handy as my brother lives near them). Anyone know where there's better deals to be had?

Thanks for any advice

Keith

SATA cables are not like IDE, you use one cable for each drive.

Scan have very good deals especialy on their Today Only page.

cheers mate - as that's the case would it be too much to expect the cable to be included when you buy the drive? Probably I guess !

This has vexed me in the past. Miserable backstards. How much extra does it cost, 50 cents?

It seems to be the only time you are not going to need a cable is when you are plugging the drive into some hot swap RAID.

Which, in fairness, is rare enough in the grand scheme of things.

I just bought a load of them anyway to put in my secret cupboard. They should make them different colours too. Not just all red.

Rant over

Yeah I feel totally the same, another is USB cables with printers, they don't come with most of the time, but then I think 50 cents to us but 50 cents x 1,000,000 is a lot of money to be saved. :?

If you go to any of the Soho/SELKENT meets let me know and I will fish you out a cable and give it to Jambo or something, we chuck out hundreds.
