Sees to be no consensus amongst the pros, so how do you boil yours to get that perfect boiled egg - fully-cooked white with a runny yolk to dip your toast soldiers in?

Me?

1. Put eggs in pan and almost cover with cold tap water
2. Add salt to water
3. Turn on heat and bring water to the boil
4. Turn heat down to a gentle boil
5. Cook for 3mins (or 3mins 15 secs for extra large eggs) starting from point at which water begins to boil

So c'mon, share your tips for that perfect soft-boiled egg

As Jabba except:

Cover egg with water (otherwise when water boils egg not entirely submerged)

Give egg smack with teapoon when you take it out to stop it continuing to cook

and

Hvae fried eggs instead... sunny side up... much nicer

Re kwak zzr apparently aged 3 I referred to hard boiled eggs as cardboard eggs... I can see where I was coming from.

Does adding salt to the water make any difference when boiling food in a shell?

I WOULD THINK NOT :smt102

Salt makes the boiling temp of water rise, thus cooking the egg quicker

Hmmm, thats what I thought.

I might try it though and lick the shells after eating the egg; ya never know!

** edit

Posted at the same time, my answer was to hovi5.

Viper is correct, apparently the boiling point of water will rise half a degree celcius for every 58 grams of salt dissolved. Salt anyone?

Salt makes the boiling temp of water rise, thus cooking the egg quicker

..so won't that mean that it takes longer for the water to boil :?

Still don't understand how folks enjoy eating eggs with runny yolks. Makes me want to :smt078 :smt102

Cheers

I don't know whether this is just an old wives tale or true scientific fact - but I was always told that adding salt to the water helps to stop the egg from cracking.

The 'old wife' will tell you the reason is it just does OK!

But the scientist will say it perhaps has something to do with Osmosis (which was also my hamsters name when I was 7) and the passing of fluid through a porous membrane. Though I can never remember whether it goes from a weaker solution to a stronger ot vice versa...

... hey, it was nearly 20 years ago since I took my Biology A level. I could google it - but that's cheating. [-X

Never add the eggs to boiling water they crack.
I don't like the yoke runny so I let them boil up then leave to simmer for five minutes.
Poached eggs now there's an art form.

one tends to ring one's bell, request a runny egg and soldiers from jeeves and about 5 minutes later i have an egg ready to eat.

can't see why there's a need for a thread about it?

True of many things on here

But it is Idle Banter and there more than 20 posts in the thread already.........besides, Delia made a whole 30 min TV prog about it not that long ago. If she thinks its worth that then it must be worth of discussion on here.

Mind you, I'd rather boil an egg than watch Norwich

Like the immediately hitting the egg tip to stop it cooking, will use that.

What's that all about?
Are they saying that... you're boiling away your egg, and then you decide that its cooked, so you give it a quick belt with a spoon and they egg ceases to cook from that moment on?

Cause that sounds unlikely to me boss. Highly unlikely.

Yup - with modern factory farming methods the egss now have miniature chips implanted in them which respond to the sharp tap of the metal spoon and immediately close down all cooking functions*

Well, why not? It's about as likely that the desk on which I'm typing comprises lots of things I can't see bumping into each other...

* Actually, it just lets the heat escape which has built up inside the shell while cooking but I actually prefer my explanation.

Go to the last method involving a cling film bag  ...apparently its the best

The prefect way to boil an egg is exactly as Jabba said...

Put egg in pan making sure egg is covered with water

Add salt to stop the egg cracking

Once water boils start timer for 3 minutes

When cooked, remove with spoon and run under cold water to stop cooking

Place in egg cup after cutting it's head off

Enjoy!!

By putting salt in water you are stopping the egg cracking, that does not affect the taste of the egg as the water can not penetrate the shell, it is purely heat that cooks the egg

:D
