Same here - have used one for 6 years and have never had any battery problems with my bikes.

Excuse the stupidity, but why do you guys need these? Is it because you don't use your bikes over winter? If so, what is deal - remove the battery, hook it up, come back when it's summer?

Reason for stupidity - Have always riding over winter before - a little unsure as to what to do, as this winter I'll be doing little/no riding!

22.50 from the bikeshow this year, and 25 quid for my dads one last year

Optimate enables you to keep the battery topped up whilst it is still on the bike.

This time of year I do not ride the bike quite as much, so I leave it in the garage connected to the Optimate. Some alarms drain batteries, so it solves any problems there. Much better for your bike than starting it of a couple of minutes once a week.

Ah, see that's what I was planning on doing! Only problem is, I don't have any power in my garage, so I'll guess I have to remove the battery and keep it in the flat.

I don't know the specifics or even if it's true, but there's something in my memory that tells me you're not supposed to do this. Do (faulty) batteries produce some sort of toxic gas or other? :?

rewind 25 years, charging FS1E battery in bedroom. Bubbling away nicely. Lit cigarette. Ciggie gets close to the long rubber battery vent tube. Kaboom. No battery. 2 weeks later no curtains either, they took the brunt of the acid splash.

The gases from a charging battery are a tad explosive---------------made me chuckle though

My Optimate's gone a bit wrong, it still charges but it's a bit flakey- doesn't always start, sometimes it gets stuck on desulphate even with a good battery, and sometimes it reports BAD and stops charging after about 2 minutes- but turn it off and on and it works properly. It's not exactly had a hard life either. Not too impressed, I wouldn't buy another.
