View Full Version : Insomnia
It's back :(
I woke up at 2am convinced I hadn't sent a client his money (I had) and was all set to get up and come into the office to check. I haven't slept since, and as I went to bed at 12.30 cos I wasn't sleepy, I'm just a tad jaded and brittle today, deffo not feeling my best. So if I start getting stroppy just chuck a bucket of cold water over me, okay
Seems like last night was a bad one for sleeping. I woke up 4 times really worried about how I'd get back from the north of scotland in time for starting work at 8 this morning in london.
Except I don't start work until one.
And I'm not in scotland...
******* stress!

I found I get Insomnia a lot..........
Cos I smoked some wacky backy now and then when its required.
But I nearly set fire to my bedroom when I dropped the lit ember on the bed.
Which made me get out of bed and head towards my fridge.
To my despair their was only a Spud and not a lot else, when I lift my head and smashed it on the light. It was then I remembered about a sordid event with the missus on the common.
So their I was in my kitchen all alone in the dark listening to some eerie noises which gave me the shivers. It was then I decided I really needed to go to bed but I couldn't!
N.B This probably makes no sense, but someone might get it.

Do excersise. When I can't sleep, I just go do some press-ups or go for a run. After 2 hours of squash you can sleep anywhere!
Wellllllll
Apparently the way to cure insomnia is to drink to glasses of red wine and go back to bed. It's like mugging your brain:-
Brain thinks it should be asleep, so isn't prepared to be blind sided by some alchol!

I also had a cr*p night... too much sh*t on my mind. Can I go back to bed now?
Still feel like death warmed up but the world has suddenly become a happier place as (a) our coffee machine - a Magimix Nespresso thing - has just come back from the repair shop and (b) Anne has just arrived back from the deli with a huge cake for me :D :D :D

Peaceful, battery recharging sleep is not a thing I have ever known. Sometimes wonder why I even don my night shirt and cap tbh. :?

the last 2 nights sleeps have been rubbish for me :? must have an sv1000s on my mind

Cant say never known, but its a very very rare occasion for me to be able to sleep and feel refreshed. :( I utterly sympathise with people who struggle with not sleeping - its a horrible feeling waking up utterly exhausted before your day has even begun. :(

I am a hideously bad sleeper too.
What I would say to you Ed... (and others) is not to watch TV, or go on the Web, or do programming or whatever, what you should do is something really brain dead and repetitive. Like folding clothes, or cleaning dishes.
Something that is going to occupy your brain just enough to allow it to shut down.
Another one is stretching. You will not feel like it probably, but if you can go online someday, and print out a series of stretches, even a yoga routine, and leave it somewhere you might have a bit of luck. Or even try yoga once a week, and see how that goes, (because I can absolutely guarantee you two things about yoga, 1)You will be surprised at how difficult it is, and 2) you will be very relaxed after it).
Another one, if its not too bad, and you just cant get that final way off to sleep, is to imagine very clearly and as slowly as you can something happening. (I imagine a flower opening ) Work through it as slow as you can, every detail, and if you speed off ahead, start again. Consciously slow things down.
A slow moving book is another one.
Also, no alcohol, and no coffee after 4 ish. And dont eat dinner too late.
Hope you feel better during the week mate.
Same here!! Just recently things have been a tad sressful shall we say and sleep is something I look forward to... plus when you have children and they have you up half a dozen times a night does't help either!!
I wish they would discover a pill where you could switch your mind off and get some sleep rather than worry about things!!
Bloody Stress!!
Bloody Body!!
Early night for me tonight... That's fur sure!!
 :D
my sleeping appears to work in shifts.
one week i'll be insomnaic (if its not a word then it should be) the next week i'll be absolutely fine, sleep like a log minimum 6 hours and all that.

When I was having trouble sleeping after I did my leg in, I got a big packet of Boots the chemist's Sleepeze- it's just hops and valerian I think, nothing heavy or "chemical", and I don't honestly know if they made the slightest difference but they can't hurt.

A few mates of mine are medics about the city... and I am not sure if I agree with this, but, I have done it.
So, what they are talking is, a low, as in 1/4 mg tab of Xanex, about 45 mins before you want to sleep if you think you are not going to be able to sleep that night.
It does not really work in the same way as "sleeping tablets", it just makes you less anxious about being not able to sleep, which in fact is preventing sleep.
Again... meds are a strong tactic. But, like I said, when I was under mad pressure, and not sleeping was just not an option, i did it. and it worked very well.
You can use it to help you get your sleep routine back too... which is a big part of the problem.
Y'see, I'm the complete opposite (well, I would be wouldn't I  ) But if I can't sleep specifically because I've got something on my mind then I have to do something like watch TV... baaaad action movies are the best - or spy thrillers or something like that.
If I do something monotonous it just leaves my brain free to mull things that are bothering me over even more and I end up in a worse state than I started! By watching movies I can occupy my brain with something else and it works a treat.
But then I'm also lucky enough to be able to manage on remarkably little sleep - if I've got a lot of work to do before an event I have regularly gone for 3 days straight with no sleep at all - then only a couple of hours or so for the next few nights too. I'm fine - bright and happy a bunny as ever.
So I'm odd. :smt102

I tried the "reverse psychology" thing. ie lying in bed trying to stay awake. It worked for a few nights then reverted to normalcy. I've been signed off with stress for 2 weeks now and I don't think I ve slept more than 3 hours a night for a lot longer. Stress is a complete b*stard. You don't notice it creeping up on you, then it whacks you over the head and really f*cks you over.
I never thought it would happen to me. I really didn't. Then along comes a good three months or so of real crap jobs - RTC's, sudden deaths etc. Topped off with a murder that I'll more than likely have to go and give evidence for. Add this to unsupportive and spiteful management and you'll probably have some idea of where I am at the moment. Former military colleagues used to call it "The Darklands", which I think is a bit melodramatic but sums it up quite nicely. Having nightmares as well. I'm no expert but this can't be good for me.
My Dr reckons I need some time away from work so he's signing me off on a week by week basis to keep an eye on my situation. I have to see him each week on a Wednesday.
Sorry to offload this on here but I'm really down at the moment and being on here gives me a real lift, especially when I'm reading the jokes.

I swear to god. I knew that was going to come back to haunt me. I think I am going to have to change my screen name and start again at this point

Oh poor you dude, you have to clear up life's messes, just remember how many people would thank you for that if they meet you. Just get a few nice things to look forward to, and try to block out the crappy stuff. I find anticipation and hope are the two greatest mood lifters in the human psyche. Or head round mine for a few beers, that would be fun!

And there it is.
Stress is a complete *******. And everyone is embarrassed to ever mention they have a hard time with it. And not sleeping makes it exponentially worse.
And you never see it coming. And it acts in weird ways on your body.
Taking a week off work is the best you can do.
Do yoga too mate. Try it. Go on. I dare ye.
Ed, I really feel for you because, as you might recall, I went through a really bad period with this at the back end of last summer.
I'd go to sleep really easy and then wake up at about 1:30am and that was it for the night. Absolutely horrible and I lost nearly 2 stone in weight all told. Tbh, I'm sure that there was something physically wrong with me but I can't prove it.
I tried everything that the good folks on here suggested short of waccy-baccy, Class A narcotics and "self-abuse"
In the end I gave up alcohol completely (you can tell I was getting desperate!) and made a serious attempt to get rid of all work-related stress by making sure my desk was clear when I left every evening, no matter how late I had to stay to do it. This helped me but might not work for you.
In truth, I don't know what did work because one Friday night I went to bed at 9:00pm and I woke up at 3:00pm the following day feeling great. I suspect that my body just gave up and shut down for a bit.
I've slept pretty well ever since, I'm back on the booze and the weight has gone back on (and a little more if truth be known!)
I can't offer you any advice as I don't know what will work for you. However, you might like to try a cup of Redbush tea before you go to bed. Failing that the try the waccy-baccy or the Class A narcotics. Don't do the other coz you'll go blind
