That's what I call a pair of specs
Somebody give the poor guy a cornea transplant...Or summat.
Although I beleive that they should really change the eyesight rules for driving, Those that have 20-20 vision dont bloody use it !!!
I was following a driver today who made three dangerous errors in less than 60 seconds. The first was pulling away from a flashing amber without checking it was clear and nearly cleared up a bunch of school kids. second, lane changing without indication and teh third was poor lane discipline (wandering across the lines). After I managed to get passed while shaking my head she was ranting and raving at me !!!!
I know that as riders we see this every day but it dont half make you wonder sometimes!! The irony is that this chap would probably make more use of his poor eyesight than a lot do with perfect vision.
(p.s I wouldnt let him read a paper in the sun with them glasses on !!)
:laughat: Mr Davies is currently taking lessons from his father, Anthony, as his last instructor abandoned him without any notice or explanation.

I think if he passes the eyesight test then he has every right to drive - but I do think they should make hime drive an ice-cream van with the chimes on loud so people know where he is from a mile away.

The DVLA can revoke your license on many medical conditions but as far as I am aware due
to his age it would be a matter of self-certification and if he has stated he has adequate vision until this is questioned by an authority he can drive. I think in the interest of safety everybody should have to pass a medical before any type of driving license is granted
N.B. BUT KEEP HIM IN SOME REMOTE WELSH VALLEY PLEASE

i'm assuming he's passed the dvla eyesight test and that's why he's admitting he drives. if he mounts kerbs because of his sight all that says to me is that the dvla test is wrong. if he's mounting it because he's a crap driver, that's something else...it doesn't actually say why he mounted it (no explanation from him).

If they pass him, then it means we all get away with our dark visors

If a doctor tells you that you are not in a fit state of health to drive you MUST report it to DVLA. If you drive at any point until a doctor has passed you fit and DVLA have re-issued your licence it is an offence. Have an accident and it's jail time.
In this case, unless a doctor has said "No", he is legally OK to drive.

Methinks he knows quite well he is not fit to drive, so is staying well clear of anyone official who might be able to tell him so.
The voluntary 'self certification' of fitness to drive is a joke. How many older drivers are there out there with failing eyesight who will never give up driving voluntarily? Plenty of 'blind old bats' on the road. Many young folks that have used computers all their lives will have less than perfect eyesight. Similar situation with (legal) drugs, lots of these say not to drive, but folks do.
I find my eyes are not what they were...... although last eyetest said I was OK. I get tested anually courtesy of work.

I used to have a friend that I shot pistols with.
He was a bean counter called Trevor. He didn't drive and one day I asked why.
On his driving test, he was asked to read the number plate of a car before the test. Couldn't and the test was canceled on the spot. 2 days later he received a letter requesting he return his provisional licence. I now know why Trevor was such a crap shot.
As for this guy.
I would assume his instructor would have checked he could pass the eyes test prior to his first lesson.
To have as claimed mounted the pavement etc. I guess it was whilst he had his father instructing and no school dual control. So I guess as well as a crap learner, his dad is also a crap instructor.
I see no problem with friends family giving lessons. That is the way I leaned to drive. The same with most of my friends. My own kids would have Lent that way if I had my own car to instruct them in.
Give the guy the chance to learn to drive. If his eyesight proves not to be good enough then take away his licence. There are enough people with uncorrected poor visibility on the road as it is. At least this guy know he has eyesight problems in the first place

I read the other day that this guy has earned enough money now from his interviews etc to buy himself a much better car then he would have been able to afford otherwise. i think it was only 2 or 3 grand but he was quick to thank all the nosey neighbours for bringing it to the medias attention.
And this story proves its as bad as most bikers think it is. How many times have you muttered to yourself in your lid "Gott be f**kin blind hasnt he??!?!?" about some driver or another?
Drivers turn blind eye to vision problems
By Isabel Oakeshott, Health Correspondent, Evening Standard 12.08.03
Millions of adults are putting themselves and others at risk by deliberately ignoring eyesight problems, research claimed today.
Half the population uses some kind of vision correction. Of the other half, many need to do so but are put off contact lenses because they think they will be uncomfortable and glasses because they do not like they way they look.
It means that as many as 2.5 million Britons could be a danger to themselves and others when they do everyday activities such as driving, researchers claim.
The study of just under 1,000 adults who had not had eyesight correction was carried out by Dr June McNicholas, a senior research psychologist at the University of Warwick.
The participants from London, Glasgow, Manchester-and Coventry, were given the standard-Snellen Chart eye test and asked for their opinions on contact lenses, glasses and laser eye surgery.
The study found 35 per cent failed the eye test, with 33 per cent of the failures saying they were "not surprised".
Dr McNicholas said this revealed many people - including nurses, dentists and even a taxi driver - had taken a conscious decision not to have their vision corrected.
She also noted that 65 per cent of those who failed drove cars.

He's been banned for failing the eyesight test. Common sense has prevailed for once.

I think they stacked it against him tho, according to the story the car was 20 yards away, 3 times the mandated 20 feet.
Looks like the North Wales constabulary are moving in on West Wales too.....
David (glad that the bloke is off the road)

That's the right distance - the mandate is 20.5 metres or 20 metres depending on whether its an old or new style plate.

Personally, if he fails the eyesight test, he can't drive anyhow. If he passes the eyesight test, then he can take the full test. If he passes that, good on him.
Now what was I talking to someone about before? Ah yes, the paintball gun mounted in tankbag that had paint you couldn't remove, so bikers could mark other car's as to$$ers for other bikers....
