Because I always go and do something like this
Bust my collar bone last night!!
Don’t worry it wasn’t on my SV, I was at an indoor Kart track on my minimoto. It’s a clean break with one end poking out a bit where it has slid over the other end … nice … :?
There is an upside, I did my other one a few years back, so at least I will have matching pair of lumps now when it finally fuses …
Ah bummer!
Did mine in the summer so I sympathise. At least you picked the right time of year to be off the bike!
Get well soon!
Ouch!!! :? Sounds painful. Hope u heal up quick. :)

Yeah, not the end of the world, but the ~6 weeks initial mend time will span Christmas
It would have been better if it was my arm or summin, at least when that is put in a cast then it is isolated and you can get on ... with a collar bone, apart from giving u a sling they do nothing ... so it is free to move about (god knows how it can ever heal??? but they do :) ) so it is a really irritating brake ...
Still, have these hobbies and this sort of thing happens from time to time
Ouch!!! :? Sounds painful. Hope u heal up quick. :)
Ahhh she luvs me really :smt058
I can put up with the pain/discomfort, but it is the boredom that will get me
Also with 6 weeks of no exercise and then a gentle built up, this Greek god body I have been working on will all have gone to waste

Dude, I don't hate you... If I hated everyone who's wound me up I'd... well, I'd hate everyone...
As for the boredom, if you do stuff to make it hurt all the time you'll be so busy putting up with the pain you won't get bored. ;)

I think I am already sorted on that front!!! Like I said where it cant be put in a cast it is free to move about and therefore one of the more irritating breaks.
An unlucky fall, but hey, things could always be far worse!!!
I knew what I had done straight away ... it was kinda a 'oh no, not a collar bone again, that's inconvenient!!'

Hehe, she was like 80 odd!!! Felt sorry for her, some old pensioner that was stranded there with no family or friends to help her out, she could barely walk and was in obvious signs of discomfort and stress … it would have cost her £20 odd to get home … on a pensioners … well pension … that would mean she may have had to go cold or hungry for a while I guess??? It was also about 2am at this point.
So I did the honourable thing and offered to take her home (it was only a slight detour anyway) :)
Hopefully the karma gods will see me right for that one?!!? ;)
Sorry to disappoint Grinch, but we didn't detour via the Churchillian ... we were at the QA too ... so it wouldn't have been far ;)

Lol, the KARTING track make you sign a disclaimer before you ride anyway… but no, no I am not going to sue…
I was there participating in what is a potentially dangerous sport/hobby things went a bit wrong and I hurt myself … really???
I can’t believe some people do actually sue these places coz they hurt themselves!! No wonder there are so few official places in existence, the insurance must be crippling?? (I have to travel >200 miles round trip to go to an indoor track) :?
You drove this granny home, with a broken collar bone? Must have been your left one then?

I will have matching pair of lumps now when it finally fuses …

You having it plated and pinned?
Or having to heal the old fashioned way with a figure 8 bandage round your shoulders?

thor - Yeah, it was my left one.
CoolGirl - No one wants to feel my lumps :( .... Oh well I'll just have to show you them and make you go 'ewwwwwwwwwwwww' :)
Razor - Just a sling job, I asked them to slice me and pin it as I knew that would make it a quicker heal and make it more comfortable, but no dice :(
At least the broken end didn't pierce the skin, I hate when that happens.

Mine is a wicked little watercooled minimoto, like this:- http://www.theboyztoyz.co.uk/catagories-list.asp?prod=3 they are supposed to have about 10hp and do about 60mph 8) (so in reality prolly 8hp and 50 mph?? .. that's enough on a bike that size mind believe me  )
Can’t say I am overjoyed it happened, but hey, bearing in mind all my hobbies seem to be dangerous/action sports I have to accept at some stage I might actually hurt myself ;) You can’t get all glum if/when it finally does happen … although uncomfortable/inconvenient, it isn’t that serious an injury, so I’m cool about it … hey might even get the sympathy vote on nights out ;) … I need a cooler story than minimoto though … any ideas ;)
At the end of the day isn’t it the possibility you might hurt yourself that makes it exciting to start with and one of the reasons we are all into bikes ;)
Had a look on my PC here and it looks like I have the best minimoto footage at work (most of the stuff here is on my old less powerful bike)… but I’ll make a cut of what I have here tomorrow and post it up :)
At the end of the day isn’t it the possibility you might hurt yourself that makes it exciting to start with and one of the reasons we are all into bikes ;)
If someone could promise me I would never ever hurt myself on my bike I would be as happy as a sandboy, you can take your pain and shove it thanks

Can't say that wouldn't be a bonus ... especially on my commute to work as that is a lame way to hurt myself  ... I don't ever WANT to hurt myself, but participating in the sports I do I have to accept there is an element of risk ... its this element of risk that gives you the adrenaline hit ...
For example, rock climbing is another one of my hobbies, that is quite a rush when you are holding on by the tips of your fingers and edge of your toes, beginning to weaken and slip, desperately trying to 'clip in' ... then you get the next 'clip' in and you know you can now only fall about a foot or two as opposed to what seems like miles ... you then get a massive 'hit ... so it is the fear of hurting yourself that provides the rush ... not actually ever doing it!!

Hmm... The truth is the way as it shall set you free . Anyways minimotos are big enough toys for blokes and we all know every girl loves a man with big toys  . Go with minimoto story. That'll be good enough
At the end of the day isn’t it the possibility you might hurt yourself that makes it exciting to start with and one of the reasons we are all into bikes ;)

Hehe, :P
What I can't work out is firstly how come the broken ends look to be at opposite angles? (highlighted below) Did a bit drop out? did a bit turn??? or is it just how it appears in the x-ray but they are pretty much flat ends?
http://upload4.postimage.org/1720050/collarbone2.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/1720050/photo_hosting.html)
and surely if the bone is now overlapping then my shoulder will essentially move in??? and by the looks of the x-ray by a fair bit (~2"??) how can they be happy with that? I asked again, but they didn't want to go in a fix me properly

The outcome ...
http://upload4.postimage.org/1902667/collarbone2.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/1902667/photo_hosting.html)
Don't look much different to me!? ... apart from I have managed to pull it into line a bit more 8)
I forgot to squinny, and my sick-note expires today so I will have to go back to work tomorrow doh!! #-o
I asked if they would slice me to get rid of the uncomfortable shard, but alas he said no ... there is a nerve that runs right across there and they would have to cut it to shave it down ... I guess it is this nerve getting trapped/caught that is causing me jip?!?! ... either way they aren't going to do anything about it ... he says over time it will 'round' a bit though ...
Finally it looks like I broke/cracked a bone in my hand too ... there is a little bit near the wrist under the flabby bit of your palm. That is cracked ... but again they don't do anything about it and mother nature will take care ...
So to summarise ... if if this was the dark ages I'd be no better or worse off as all the healing is done by ME not the NHS .. all the NHS have done for me is made me wait for a few hours in waiting rooms!!

obviously you were mistaken
maybe we should start a "dodgy shoulder gang" to run along side the wonky knee gang?
I'll be a member as my shoulder was just left to heal itself after a partially dislocated it and now has a sticky out bit
I can't believe they've left it like that
I can count myself lucky that the hospital I went to did line my break up. Bit painful at the time but what the heck I'm a man and could take it
Didn't get a sling.
They did miss the ankle break though. Mind you so did I.
It was only when I got home and took my boot & sock off that I realised that something wasn't quite right. Sorted when I went back the next morning.
That break still gives me a bit of grief to this day, seven years on.

Not only did I ask about getting pinned at the time, but when they said no, I asked them to pull me straight again, but they refused ... Perhaps my hospital are just lazy?!!?
Or perhaps they didn't want a fugly in their hospital any longer than they had too as I was scaring the other patients?!?!

Hope the healings going well Blue...
I did my left collar bone when I was ten - I think cos I was bendier then its healed without much of a bump, then I did my right one when I was 18 which hurt like hell and NEARLY came through the skin, but not quite. Just sat around for a few weeks with a sling. Is fine now, never stopped me doing any of the sports I do, just have a bump to prove it! 8)
Oh yeah, and they generally never surgically fix collar bones unless the skin is compromised (or open) or unless the nearby arteries are damaged. Lots of problems with plated ones so ain't always the best option... Similar with little hand bones too!! Sorry - you seem to have picked the 'we don't operate on these' bones to break!!
Hey - not a bad time of the year to be not doing much anyway huh??
When mine got done the doc said lump would go down and it has. Mind you it was fairly well lined. I asked the physio if there was any chance that I wouldn't be aligned right but she said that after the bone had healed, most of posture imbalance was due muscle atrophy. The ont scars left now are mental...

To be honest it was supposed to stay in a sling for 6 weeks ... not sure it has been in the sling for a total of 6hours let alone weeks!!! ... Been mending me minimoto and car for the past week ... oh and been down the gym (only cycling and one arm swimming ;) ) ... I really am not doing as the doc ordered!! :D But what do they know?!!? :D I am basically doing as much as I can whilst keeping the pain/discomfort as my guide.
He was most impressed that I had full movement in my shoulder!!! ... I didn't tell him that was coz it has never really been in the sling so I have kept it moving!! :D
I did my other one a few years back, same deal, overlapped and lumpy!!! ....  :D
Good for you. I'm glad it hasn't slowed you dwn too much. Me, I had never broken a bone before so I took REAL easy. My muscles were totally gone after two weeks. Looked like someone had sucked half of my body dry!
Anyway, glad to hear you are on the mend!

I was pretty good for the first week, I kinda sat about taking it easy (well apart from driving 100 miles home straight after the accident and then driving to the hospital :D) ... but built it up from there really ... coz I could and I wanted to ...
It just uncomfortable and an inconvenience. The little bone in my hand bit means that I cant really grip things, which is annoying, but you just work round it ...
As for these sort of injuries, these things only hurt if you are a b1tch :D .... you will know when I am proper hurt ;)
Oh those Xrays are scary, I thught they'd have sliced you.
Was the bone in your wrist the scaphoid? Not much you can do about those as I understand it.

They only slice if the skin has broken, its to prevent the risk of infection and the bone will heal like that. My other side broke exactly the same, so I wasn't surprised when they said they weren't going to do anything ;)
scaphoid - that sounds about right ... the little lumpy bit that if you follow your little finger down to the wrist is at the bottom of the flabby bit and the end of your palm.
Having just caught up, hope you mend soon.
