View Full Version : Bit cold this morning, time to adjust the idling speed!
Well, it was a bit nippy this morning. Every time I cut my choke & dropped my revs the goddammed bike stalled. Not funny when you're trying to filter!
Even when I got to the orifice (after 5 1/2 miles) it cut out in the bike bay.
Right, so after searching the forum, I'm going to set the revs to 14000, but my question is:
Would you keep the same idle speed mornings & night or would you lower it back to 12000 in the evenings as it's warmer?

Errrmm, slight typo there buddy? 14000?!?!? Now that's a an idle!
I used to do the same thing on my old gpz500, during winter months the idle would be set slightly higher due to frequent stalling on short cold trips. Just don't set it too high. iirc, the sv650 has a range of 1300 plus or minus 100 from what is says in Haynes. HTH

I used to stick mine at 1400 and leave it. Won't hurt, just use a little extra petrol when stationary.

Errm? Idle speed?
I set the idle on my pointy at 1,000rpm. The cold hasn't bothered it yet.

As mentioned the idle should be set at 1400rpm +- 100rpm. Doesn't matter what the weather is doing.

Slightly higher helps keep the battery charged and improves fuel usage, especially over smaller trips.

Auto-choke on the pointy due to FI. Idle speed due to cold weather. As sdusk says, the cold hasn't bothered me yet.

I know. Idle speed is different to choke.
The choke should be fully off when up to temperature leaving the engine at its set idle.
I tend to keep the idle speed up at about 1,400 rpm on an SV as it seems to make it smooth but just do it by ear. Only adjust the idle speed at the end of a trip when the engine's warm or it'll be all over the shop. Ride for a bit and adjust up and down as you see fit, it's only a number and you can generally tell if the motor's happy.
