Just looking at Suzuki's website and the SV1000 isn't on it. Has it finally succumbed to emissions laws or something?

Nobody knows then?

i think they were planning on dropping it as it can't meet emisions for next year, but don't quote me on that

From what I understand Suzuki are still producing the machine - but not for the UK market.

Yeah, the rest of the world gets it, we just don't.

The engine will still be used in the DL1000 but the SV1000 and SV1000s is dead. The give away was the lack of them at the NEC this year, I think you may be right about the emissions.

Damn, I had hoped to replace my 650 with one next summer.

Looks like it'll be secondhand if its an SV then!

I love the SV 'cos its an excellent all rounder, with an involving character. My SV is a rough, unrefined, little ******* - and thats why I love it.

Any ideas what else I could have about 1000cc?

I want a sporty riding position that can flick and scratch on tight Scottish back roads like the Dukes Pass, but not one that'll hurt me if I want to do 400 miles in a day. Decent pillion seat and proper grabrail (not a leather strap!). And most important CHARACTER! If I'd wanted my journey to be as smooth, comfortable and easy to ride as something like a VFR, I'd have taken the car! Can't afford superbike insurance either!

A good second hand Busa isn't a bad move, I've just got one to add to my stable.

VERY comfy!!

Unlike incest and folk music, a BMW is something you should try at least once.

The R1200S would fit your brief and the K1200R was on my fantasy list before I bought the SV.

There is, however, the potentially painful issue of money :smt102

I'm with tiger on that 1..
I had a go of a R 1200 GS and although i hate the enduro look, I fell in love with it as soon as i pulled away on it.. the power and comfort :notworthy: i offered him a straight swop my sv (yeah i'm a trator, but F*** it :P), a month old, for his 2 year old Beemer.. he then told me it cost him just under £8000 a few days before... I would if i had the cash! it just has to be tried! I felt like i was in a tractor getting back onto my sv though

Why a Thou?

I just discovered this week that in the small hamlet I call home there are 8 bikers and 5 svs. 1 is a thou. We all congregated by my garage on wed and had a good ole natter and shot of each others bikes.

Long story short....we all liked the thou then they all had a shot on the CBR. It blew them all away and mines is a 95 M reg. Hands down cbr clear winner. The cbr has a comfy seat, grab rail more hp than the sv thou, faster, corners better, steers better. As for the suspension...enough said. The guy - hamish wanted to swap my cbr there and then. just couldn't believe how good it was.

You can smooth the cbr andc tour all day long, scratch and rag the tits off it and it wont complain

I had a shot on the sv1000 and other than the2 exhausts there is nothing that would make me rush out to buy one.

So why get a thou? The performance is not that better by mere mortal standards and there's lots more no doubt.

My tuppence worth but a 600f is a logical step up.

Hic - berfore anyone flames me ...I'm just back from the boozer and far from coherent

more hp than the sv thou

Hmm, since your just back from the boozer Stuarty I'll let you off that one.

I'm not 100% sure of my figures anyway, but the CBR600F3 typically dyno's at 90-100bhp standard, the SV 100-110bhp. Torque figure would blow away the CBR too I would expect about 70 ft-lbs compared to about 45.

I like the ergonomics of the CBR, but 600cc fours are not really my bag. I'm a lasy rider and like bags of low down grunt. I'm also a bit of a cheap ***** when it comes to riding a big twin cylinder bikes, they just make me smile.

The R1200S would fit your brief

Good point! Hadn't thought of a beemer. I'm off to check bike trader so see how expensive they are secondhand.

Firestorm?

The thou never seemed to catch on... Strange, really. I think it might have been a buyer perception thing- people think of SVs as girly bikes, even when they've got TL motors in  Personally I never wanted one, but they're really good bikes, it makes little sense.

I'll 2nd the Firestorm :D

Had one for 3yrs, 36,000mile.

600's would be a speck in your mirrors on the majority of roads ,thanks to big torque and no need for 3down changes every time you want to accelerate.

Renntec do a solid grabrail.

60mph sounds like 30mph. No bother off the cops as it does not sound like your speeding.

Lazy long "slow-mo"wheelies off the power.

Fist-sized carbs for flames and backfires.

Imho a better looking and finished bike than the SV. Really similar bikes to run and insure tho' and plentiful bargains 2nd hand. You can not go wrong with either.

BMW 1100s ? More weight, less performance, quirky, flat drone of an engine. V-Twins have boom and bark! 8)

SV1000 and VTR are rocketships compared to a 650!

You lucky fella!

Would perhaps look at the TL or aprilia big twins. Although I did like the firestorm I had, I just felt the whole experience was overrated. Slow steering and the word 'agricultural' seems to describe the bike spot on. Didn't really like the build quality either. Great as it was my 1st big twin but looking back on it - Would prefer something else. Maybe it was because I only used it in the winter but the Sv 650 is a lot more fun in my opinion.

They ARE cheap though. Would just get a TL instead given the opportunity.

STRAMASHER - You don't park your bike by george square do you? Always used to be a black firestorm sitting, chained up, every day.

I unexpectedly found myself wanting one of these the other day:

Andy, I rode one at the BM demo day and was just left feeling nothing at all except 'Can I get onto something else now?'

You could also try an Aprillia Falco which can be had for cheap - I nearly got one instead of the ZX when I was trading in - the Kwak dealer gave me a better price for my SV. They are just fabulous - basically what the SV1000 could have been but isn't (I've ridden both).

Oh aye, don't get me wrong, they're probably rubbish :) But I can't help a sort of guilty fascination. They're like a 916 made out of scaffold and boilerplate. I like the idea more than anything else.

Isn't the Firestorm supposed to be a bit of a serious beast to handle, ie: highside the inexperienced at the first opportunity, with proper superbike performance and riding position - or have I got the wrong bike - or its that just the SP2 version?

I'd love an Aprilia Falco, but stories such as "three months to get a new fuel filter" kind of put me off any Aprilia.

Scooby - didn't think BMW knew how to make a bad bike nowadays (or certainly thats what RIDE mag would have you believe), what was wrong with it?

The RC versions- SP1 and 2- are the superbikes, the Firestorm's like, well, a less good SV thou really :) Never really heard of the SP being a handful, didn't find it that way at all, it was however probably the worst bike for the road that I've ever ridden... On the right roads or on track it'd be utterly sublime though. But put it this way- get it to Knockhill or the Duke's Pass and I doubt there's many bikes I'd rather be on... Just that by the time I got there I'd want to set it on fire.
