View Full Version : Best way to remove grips?
So whats the best way? Screwdriver under the grip or is there another way?
Squirt WD40 under the grip while wedging it open with a screw driver, it will then come off realy easly.
On the pointy throttle grip there is a ridge at the end nearest the yoke that you have to get the rubber over. It will be in the way if you are applying heated grips. I sanded mine off, but would have preferred to get an R6 throttle tube instead. Might be worth considering?
Boiling water from a kettle and just pull it softens the glue up!!
Cut down the length of the grip with a stanley knife then peel it away, usually does the trick.

And how do you know if he want to remove the clutch lever bit on the bar, you need to remove the grips to replace them. Good idea though if you have no intention to use them again.

Haven't tried it myself but apparently blasting compressed air under the grip allow's you to "float" the old grip off the bar with a relative degree of ease. This would avoid causing damage to the grip or bar like you would using the stanley knife of old screwdriver techniques.

yup..stick a screwdriver in there...squirt wd40 and twist.
Ditto on the having to sand off the ridges to install the hot grips.

If you want to recycle the old grips, compressed air is the way to go. The grips just slides off and there is no risk to damage them or the throttle tube. WD40 or any other oil can be a real trouble getting cleaned off when you put the grips back.

If they are not glued on use isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) but some under the grips and let it sit for a few minutes it will let them slide off easily let them dry and they will be able to be reinstalled if desired. if they are glued you can use toluene to loosen the glue and pull them off.
