View Full Version : Anyone know much about car dealers?
I'll be wanting to trade in my M reg fiesta 1.6si and a renault scenic (1.6, 5dr, air con, yadda yadda yadda) fairly soon.
What I want to know is if dealers will actually do a straight trade, the 2 for one car...? No money exchanging at all...
:?
Any ideas?

if you went to a dealer that had ford and renault branches (like a benfields renault which had a benfields ford etc) then they might as they can shift the cars pretty easily. However you'll get a pretty ****ty price for each car. If you can be bothered to sell them i would. But sometimes the lazy option is just much more appealing :P
good luck!

Doubt it, unless the resale value of the 2 is greater than the value of the car you are buying, will only give you the trade price on each car which is less than the value of the car sold privately so better if poss to sell yourself and take hard cash then bargin

Argh... These answers do not please me...
Cheers guys. :)

I'm thinking about doing this with our cars, TBH I reckon that we'll get a better price for them if they are sold privately. It depends on the condition of your cars and wether or not the dealer can shift them on easily or not.
We may well keep Liz's Skoda though and trade it in against a Skoda Octavia if thats what we do end buying, I'm defo going to sell my Fiesta privately though.
the garages will give you next to nothing :( try to sell them private)

garages take the pi$$ sell privately and buy privately and save yourself a few grand.
I have traded two for one before - I traded a Citroen Synergie (7 seater MPV) and a Ford Escort Mk5 Cabriolet for a Saab turbo convertible from a non franchised dealer.
Going to a main Ford dealer might not help as most would not put an M reg Fieasta on their forecourt - most would trade it straight out, or auction it. Likewise with the Scenic, unless it is less than 4 years old and low mileage.
Your easiest option is to chop them both in if you can find a dealer who will do that, you will make more money if you sell them both privately but it is usually more hassle e.g:-
Having to spend time/money tarting them up
Having to spend money on advertising
Waiting around for tyre kickers who never turn up
Selling both cars and then being without a car at all until you get a new one
Ah... my poor, stressed out, lazy brain...
Sure, already selling my house... 2 cars has gotta be easy...
Life?... At least I don't have one to lose...
Thanks for all the replies. :)
MattSV - Oooh, something positive.... ;)
I currently have the same dilemma. Im trying to sell my Mazda MX5 and looking for a cheap diesel runabout however i need to sell mine first because i wont accept a trade price.
Gah, all I want is a at least a '99 3 door VW golf 2.0 gti in black...
Too much to ask?
:?
if you have found the car u want in a garage TELL THEM HOW MUCH YOU WANT for your cars. if you ask them they will offer you peanuts.
but private is the way to go

Do you know how difficult it is getting a car seat and baby into the back of a 3-door :?: :?:

a: I am the only one apart from occasional passengers that will use the car.
b: There are no car seats or babies in my future.
I was never a mumsy person and the one day (out of many, my life to date as it happens) I thought maybe it would be kewl, he decides he can't be with me because of it so babies or even the want of them to me, are a curse and will not happen.
I'm 34 now, it hasn't happened by accident yet and there's no way it will happen by accident in the future.
So, in short. I could buy a motorbike as my second car and the only one it would affect is my mum because she worries.
Comprende? :P

Do it the easy way, bung em your local block, they are worth nought so why have the hassle of whoever you sell them to knocking on your door with, this has broke and I want my money back etc.
Seriously a car of that age is worth about £200 if it has got a 12 month ticket and a decent set of tyres. Don't insult the dealers as they will only block em anyway.

Nah
I have actually been surprised when I have dropped a few of the kids cars in my local auction (block). the last 3 years ago was a 1.0 fiesta that looked the business but had just failed its mot on emissions (new engine required) two seat frames and brakes. Yet the daughter managed to get £450 with 6 days MOT on it.
Somebody was going to get a nasty shock, but with the auctions caveat emptor.
Don't feel guilty about blocking junk. Yes as a kid I got burnt buying at auction. But quickly learned that if it turns out to be a dog. Simply drop in in the following weeks auction.

I've got a '01 3 door 1.8T GTI in silver:

I haven't driven the 2.0 GTI but it got really bad reviews, apparently is too slow to deserve its GTI badge and quite fuel hungry too. Not sure how it compares in price/insurance to mine but the 1.8T is a better/faster car and comes strongly recommended, got a good bit of kick, great turbo whizz, and VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda have put that engine in loads of cars so its a well trusted engine. As for 3 doors, go for it, looks a lot nicer, easier to get in and out as the doors are bigger, and the seats in the back are just fine should you ever need them.
Things to watch for: The paint on the plastic bumper comes off with stone chips. Mine leaks water into the passenger footwell, a common golf problem. I wouldn't touch a modded one.
EDIT: Missus has just reminded me that its now her car since I got the bike. Ho hum.
I'd go with TW's suggestion Ping if you want hassle free. Just pop them into Chelmsford car auction, you won't get as much as selling them privately but if you can live with that it's hassle free. I've brought and sold my last three cars there and they're a nice helpful lot up there, plus you can get high on car fumes while waiting for your car to come under the hammer.
