I've just got my SV back after her little trip down the road and she's come back with some different tyres. She used to have 120/60 ZR17 and 160/60 ZR17 Bridgestone 020's on. The garage have put on 120/70 ZR17 and 180/55/ZR17 Metzler Rennsport. Are these going to be ok or should I start getting worried?
Erm, did you ask them to change the rubber feet?
If not, I'd be picking up the phone to tranding standards & politely asking for their opinion of the garage. Depending on what they say, call the garage.
If the garage doesn't explain themselves properly, or you're at all unhappy, ask trading standards to have a quiet word at least.
At the end of the day, I don't want ANY spanner monkey doing things with my bike that I haven't previously OK'd. If they've change the tyres, what else have they done?

They told me they were chaging them, to be honset they needed it anyway, but they didn't say they were putting them on!

I have heard of people putting a 120/70 on the front, but a 180 rear!?? I don't think I would be too happy about that!

Rennesports are just about the worst kind of tyre to fit at this time of year too
A 180 on a standard rim sounds like a recipe for disaster.
They told me they were chaging them, to be honset they needed it anyway, but they didn't say they were putting them on!
Hmm. Dubious ground then.
They said they'd change them, but didn't say what to. A wider, lower tyre will surely adversely affect cornering (compared to what you're used to at least).
If I were you, I'd simply not ride it (wearing the tyres reduces the chance of the garage swapping them) and call the garage to explain you're not impressed with the choice of tyres.
From a quick google, the Rennsports seem positively slick compared to the Z6 Roadtec's I have fitted. Not good when the weather is only going to get colder.
I'd politely ask that they change them for something more suitable (in terms of grip and size), and consider it a lesson learned. I *always* make a point of being VERY explicit whenever my bike is out of my hands (to the point where I specify what I want doing & tell them to call me if they have to even think about anything - with mechanics I know, I also jest about how many sugars they have in their tea too).

All they had in stock? Still, I'd be concerned.

I'd be taking it back and asking for tyres of the correct size... IIRC a 180 on a standard rim as Matt says is not a good idea. It does something funny to the profile of your tyre and its probably going to make your bike handle funny.
Pete,
Give them a call and explain. A 180 from what is supposed to be a 160 is a huge leap, I'm surprised the trye sealed on the rim, but I'm no tyre fitter.
Call explain the size issue and ask from some Met's Z6. They may have made an honest mistake, an unusual one but it may still have been an honest one.

Bang out of order, that. Can't do the work without asking, and that's flat out the wrong size for the rear, could be dangerous. And as's been said, Rennsports are rubbish winter tyres. I commuted for a few days on a Bandit with Rennsport Roads, on a warmish dry day they were superb, in the wet they were incredibly dodgy, especially on white lines, manhole covers etc.

You will possibly find your insurance invalid with tyres that far off the correct sizes.Get it back and get them changed.

suzuki fit a 160 to that rear rim for a reason  friend of mine had a oversize tyre fitted to the rear of his VFR750 it really screwed up the handling.
I wouldn't ride it the Tyre could pop off the rim you need a 5.50in rim for a 180 section Tyre!!!
Also there might be clearance issues with the 70 profile front!!!!

A 120/70 on the front in a Metzeler profile should be OK... But I wouldn't ride on a rear 180 and stock wheel.

A 180 section rear tyre is too large for an SV rim I think. The garage should have not put on the tyres without at least checking this, and they Definatly shoud have asked you!
Matt
the only way you can run a 180 on the SV safely is to change the rear rim too
4.5" rims are designed for 150mm tires, 160s are a squeeze, even a 160 is happier on a 5" rim,
a 180 needs a 6" wide rim without it, you asking for bead seal failure when your leaned over the most
there is, in fact 1 documented fatality attributed to a 180 tire on a SV, in California

Two things wrong as already been said. Wrong tyre size and frankly unsuitable tyres for the coming season.
Make sure they change them to a suitable tyre and not just the correct size(120/60 and 160/60). Pirelli Diablo Stradas or Metzler Z6 should be okay(just a suggestion).
If I were you I'll get a quote for the tyres from other places get tell them to match the cheapest price. That way they don't fleece you off. Failing that I'll say to stick my old ones back in and I'll get it changed somewhere else.
Fecking bunch of morons. There is absolutely no excuse for a bike shop to make such mistakes
Personally that would be the last time they ever see me and I'll make sure every rider I know is aware of their incompetence and frankly gross negligence :x
*...and out* :)

As for the 120/70 , if someone were to ask me I'll say stick to the 120/60 unless you have specific issues you wanting to address JMO.
The is a thread some where were it was discussed at length I seem to remember.

Depends, it used to be possible to say such things, it certainly isn't so any more. Since the bigger-is-better obsession with tyres many quoted tyre sizes can realistically be considered as part numbers, some makers habitually overquote sizes. There's no shortage of 160 section tyres that are fine on SV rims and not pinched at all, most, not all, 170 and 180 tyres are as near as makes no difference and fit both 5.5" and 6" rims.
All the same, an SV on standard wheels most certainly should not be wearing a 180 section tyre, that would require a 5.5" or 6" rim.

What do you expect to achieve with a 70 section?

Main reason is it means I don't run out of tyre on a track day. Since I havn't noticed any advantage to having a /60 tyre, I'll always go with the /70.

Yep, the 70 does make more sense for track use!
So it depends on usage, for my daily commute I'd rather have a 60 anyday! (although I do run 70, but only coz I have them as castoffs from my track bike and wanting to get full use out of them, not for any other reason, I prefer the 60 on the road).
What is your primary usage Peetee650?

I only ever use the bike for the run to work and back and trips away at the weekends with the other half

Personally I'd want a 60 on the front then ... but to be fair the biggest issue here is the miss-fitment of the 180 wide rear ... the 60/70 height/profile front thing is personal preference, not much more, the 180 rear could be a safety issue as the SV rim is designed for a 160 ....
Deffo get them to put a 160 on it! I have successfully run a 170 without problems, but a 180 might be a bit too far?!
Here's a 180 section tyre fitted to an SV650 But the rim is a Bandit 1200 5.5"
