View Full Version : Checking out a new rider …

Ok so admit it - when you see a sports bike pull up do you check out how ‘hard’ its has been ridden ???

i.e. Do you look at the rear tyre and check out the chicken strips, look at the owners kneesliders, hero blobs etc etc?

What other indicators do you use to judge the riders ability?

I tend to no care unless I hear the person talking/chatting to someone else about what a hero they are… I then can’t help inspecting the telltale signs … then 9 times out of 10 giggle to myself ;)

What I have found is that generally speaking the tidier the bike is the more of a poof the rider is ;)

Oh and if it is a female rider I don't care ... I just check out if she's fit!! ;)

I can't say I'm greatly interested, I don't like getting alongside other riders in fact, they're an annoying variable with all that weaving and quick moves :D

Some of us ride hard.. clean hard ;)

My bike is probably immaculate for something thats done 33K miles... its been faster than your SV will go and then some... and has got me knee downs on various corners and roundabouts  left, and right knees...

It means the rider has spent good riding time polishing rather than riding the thing ;)

Also if it is spotless, chances are the rider is more concerned about damaging it than someone that has a more tatty bike ...

im college there is this new GSXR thou spanking cleen wiht chicken strips that are huge!!!!

i do indeed also lok at other riders too altho now its gettin wintery im starting to get the strips back but meh

i agree with the cleaner the bike

its quite simple realy people that put loads of lvoe into there bikes dont want to risk anything to damage them which is y they are so clean and not riden hard.. this can also be proven wrong of cource but i havnt yet found a case.....

NONE of this can be proven tho  jsut makin arguement lol!

I don't waste my time checking out tyres etc as sports bike riders do ride like puffs anyway. If they've done something to really annoy me then I just make them work

Agree with to riding puffness being linked to how clean the bike is :P . Don't seem to work in my case though. Bike is minging but rider still crap :?

As for me, never said I didn't ride like a poof myself ... and freely admit I got big old chicken strips on my road bike … and I just don’t care!! Why??? VB you may well ride hard ... but the way you feel you need to 'brag' about it amuses me and makes you a candidate for validity inspection :)

The clean bike thing was a generalisation ... from my experience there is a strong correlation between bike 'tidyness' and how hard they ride it ...

It is not foolproof ... just a general trend ... lets face it I could look in a moto GP paddock and see a lot of tidy bikes ;)

If you are doing them sort of speeds on the road it deffo takes you out of the riding like a poof category - well done ... but it does firmly put you into another category!! ;)

I often do it in the city when sitting at the lights. Then the courier or the bloke on one of those 500cc scooter things comes up the inside and carves us all up  We all learn at our own pace and there is always someone faster or slower. I dont take riding seriously enough to get myself to the front of the pack and generally find the tidier the bike - the more conscientious rider. I place myself in this group - my bike is shiny and for now my sliders are on there for show

We define ourselves in terms of others, so when checking out other rides, IMO, it's merely an ego trip for yourself ("Am I a better rider than them?").

Personally, I judge my ride by safety, not speed. If I NEED to go to the edge of my tyre to get out of the sticky stuff, insitnct would probably take over & I'd just get on with it, but I don't try to do it (yes, I used to just after I got the bike, exploring possabilities etc).

The ONLY time I've been seriously pi$$ed off with my ride was when I came off. The only person to blame was me, and I was in such a foul mood that I simply refused to drive the car as well. I have to be in the right frame of mind to ride/drive, and I wasn't, so I didn't do it (that, and not being able to bend my left leg :( )

I judge other bikers by how they behave whilst riding, not how their bike looks. Most of the people I've seen riding on the roads get tainted with the same brush as car drivers, even the guy sat diagonally opposite me right now, because they don't have the manners to avoid my blind spot when behind me. It's for that very reason that I prefer being behind other riders. So what if they think I'm slower, I can see them & I try my best to make sure they can see me. Having said that, when I can see someone, and it's someone I know won't sit in my blind spot all the time, I've been known to get a shift on.

To me, a riding god is someone who's survived years on the road without ever even panicing about a situation, let alone coming off. I seriously doubt even Rossi can make that claim.

We are who we are, and anyone that sits in my blind spot finds I brake to let them past pretty quickly. I'd rather know where someone was than have a race to prove who's the "best".

I'll get off the soap box now

I don’t see that there is any correlation between how clean a bike is and how brave the rider is, I’ve ridden with people whose bikes are pristine that do not take foolish risks, yet are still very fast, I’ve ridden with a few that do take foolish risks to be fast, and I don’t ride with them a second time.

This bravado is good for a laugh but it should be clear that that all it is. I don’t care whether you ride fast or slow, my only concern is for those that ride with me, I want them to be safe, VB knows what I think of his riding, he doesn’t need me to vouch for him.

I suppose I think about loads of things. If I see super-sticky tyres that obviously haven't been worked hard, that always makes me I'm looking at the bike of a monkey. This means you, guy with the Supercorsa Pros on the CBR outside my office...

I also tend to look at gear... Really cheap rubbish leathers tell you something about the rider, I reckon, especially when you see them on the back of a really nice or tricked out bike.

Chicken strips tell you nothing, really... So many variables, not least of which the fact that if 2 riders ride equally fast, the one with the worse form will have smaller chicken strips :)

My bike's pretty tidy and its been ridden a damn sight harder than most other bikes out there.

However I don't tend to look at sliders/hero blobs. Okay so you can lean a bike over, great. I can scrape pegs going <10mph, but does that mean I'm a fast rider? (I am by my standards, but for arguements sake ignore this) I think its how desensive they become when you question them about their riding.

Generally the people who say stuff like "I had my knee down going round this harirpin and some w*nker in a car cut me up". I dunno why, but car bashing is a very good indicator of someone's riding abaility. Might just be round ehre though.
