I'm fitting some CBR600 (mid 90's) wheels to my 2001 SV650S, 5 inch rear as opposed to the standard 4.5 inch. The rear swap has definately been done before and a company in the states used to do a spacer kit to make the job easy. I've got everything I need to go ahead with the rear and am getting close with the front but have a problem with the speedo drive (or lack of one) :!: Have any of you guys who have changed wheels or front ends had to come up with a new speedo drive solution :?: Whatever I do, I would like to stay with the standard speedo.

This should sort you out I think.

EDIT: By the way the kit for the rear is still being produced. You can get a Bandit wheel(5.5) in there as well you know. GSXR1100M wheel too but I think(well Northy says) the Bandit 1200 wheel is lighter the 1100M or SV wheel for that matter.

Thanks for the rapid reply Ben. Can you tell me where this fits and how it works?

Well that more or less answers the question, but If you don't mind answering one or two more questions. Does it go on the rear brake side replacing the standard spacer? Does it fit straight on the 17mm curvy spindle?

Thanks.

Emm..I've not actually used the kit but basically you get some magnets and a speedo pickup wotsit. Connect(solder)wiref of the pickup to the wires off the SV speedo drive and Bob's your uncle.

If you do a seach on SVrider, you should come up with a thread with comprehensive instructions. The kit I think does come with instructions anyways.

Alternatively, PM Billy, SVrash or Northy as I believe they've all done it.

Talking about the CBR wheel spacer kit, right? The kit IIRC uses captive spacers although I think you have to replace one bearing but that is included in the kit. The guy you want is TWF on SVrider for the kit. This is his web site http://twinworksfactory.com/.

If it's not on his web site just send him an email. He is a top bloke and would answer any questions you have regarding the kit.

Might not have made myself clear here. I've sorted my spacers and bearings myself but was asking if the new rear wheel speedo drive would fit where the rear brake side spacer goes (I can't imagine where else!).

Oh I see :) .

The speedo kit usually goes on the front. The magnets are put on the brake discs and the sensor is on a bracket held by one of the brake caliper bolts.

This should make it clearer.

Never fitted mine yet :) But it's a good kit.

You can't thin the SV speedo drive down by much, few mm at most. If it physically fits, you can build a castellation for it using chemical metal, just like the standard wheel has- that's how I did it for the rear wheel swap.

And yep, Bandit 12 rear wheel is lighter than SV, which makes it loads lighter than F3.

Are you putting the CBR wheel in the front as well then? how's that working out?

Northwind asked:

Have just sleeved the bearings down from 20mm ID to 17mm (no suitable 17mm ID bearings available) tonight to suit the standard spindle, but not had the wheel in yet. A quick measure up looks promising, with disc spacing close enough and the very slightly larger rotors (296mm V 290mm) will probably be ok.

Excellent... I saw someone who'd tried it on Sv Rider, but they had disc clearance problems. Can't remember now if that was a standard front end, though.
