OK folks, I figured I'd get the org's opinion on this one, mainly as I don't have the time to look into it properly.

Opinions please on the PS3, Wii, and XBox 360. The XBox is the only one I really know much about, and even that is fuzzy around the egdes.

The reason I'm asking, is that my eldest suffers from dyspraxia (which we've only just recently found out). For those that don't know what it is, the best way I can sum it up is Attention Deficit Disorder with a touch of Autism, and extreme Anxiety. Nice for a 7 year old huh? Basically this makes it difficult for him to make friends, and he gets frustrated easily (simple ball skills etc), and as a result, this all manifests itself in physical illness.

So anyway, as a general family xmas prsent (mainly for the eldest though), we're contemplating a games console. Hopefully this will benefit hand/eye co-ordination, and act as an escape for him to get away from life's worries. We're learning towards the basic XBox 360 package for xmas, with add-ons purchased in the Jan sales for his birthday in March.

Anyway, back to the point, opinions please :)

personally i would go for the 360 premium (no point going for the core system, without the hard drive you cant play old xbox games, you dont get a wireless controller, or the remote, or the HD leads) they are 1/2 price of the PS3 which the graphics may be better on but the game play wont be. Plus you can get them modded real easy (wink wink) so you can use copied games.

saying that the Nintendo Wii looks pretty fun aswell

Not sure but the WII looks the best for co-ordination as you actually move the controller to control the game aswell as pushing the buttons.

Looks quite interesting, the games will be more arcade like than the other 2 therefore easier to pick-up and its also cheaper.

:D Too much time with my nipper, i'm sure.

I'm biased anyway. Dont put your hopes on them being in stock unless you start queuing tonight.

If I had the cash I'd go for the xbox 360 sooper dooper whatever because I've seen one in action.

Wii can take a flying fu... er.. I mean no thanks. I hate the ads so wouldn't waste my money on one.

ps3.. so far its had rave reviews from you lot so I'd be a fool to buy it.... ;)

I'd like a Wii, but then I'm cheap... any one see that 'Wii Vs PS3' advert on Bravo the other night?

A Wii, mister! Give your child a Wii for xmas and he/she wont be sdissapointed! In addition to being just brilliant, the contoller encourages the kid to get active and move about and stuff, so its good excersise too!

I voted PS3 but thats what I want not what you should get. :)
And for me simple reason is that I'm addicted to the Gran Turismo series, its why I bought my PS1 and PS2, Gran Turismo HD is out for the PS3 real soon and I'm bound to have a drunken moment on amazon and end up getting them both!
Tourist Trophy is not bad either...

The New York Times had this to say this morning:
The big picture is that Microsoft and Sony are duking it out for dominance at the top end of the video game business while Nintendo has essentially carved out the less hard-core, more budget-sensitive swath of the market for itself. The Wii (pronounced “we”) is a mass-market entertainment device. The 360 and PS3, by contrast, are each trying to be the world’s best top-end video game system and also high-powered living room media hubs.

The big problem for Sony is that the 360 performs those functions better right now, and for less money, than the PS3. Sony may get the PS3’s act together in the future, but right now there is basically no rational reason to buy a PlayStation 3 instead of an Xbox 360.

I should say, i'll be making a choice on a 360 or PS3 sometime this year. It'll depend on the titles available.

Want something in HD so i can justify the plasma screen i've got mounted on my wall.

Basically

XBOX - Sux

PS3 - Ps2 but more so

Wii - Best for kids.....

Or as a real option for the kid - get a second hand game-cube - they will be cheap soon as will second hand games and let him run riot on that.

My own preferences....

1) PC for gaming

2) PS3 - Japanese RPG addict from waaaaay back.

3) Wii - looks like lots of fun

4) Xbox - Chav special - not in my house

I'd think the wii controller could be a lot to deal with for someone who's easily frustrated... A mate of mine at school (who we now reckon was almost certainly ADD or similiar, but at the time everyone just assumed was a little ****er) used to have loads of problems with spectrum games (QAOPspace) but was brilliant at Master System games, once we got one of those.

God, I feel old.

Alrighty...

If you only had to buy one it depends on what you like i would assumepeople buying morethan one would buy a PS3 or 360 as there similar and then a Wii... i've always had nintendo stuff since i was little due to them making the best games, although the third party support isn't the greatest.

As for the xbox being a chav special i'd dispute that. I work in a games shop and when ever some new scally ****e comes out (need for speed, Fifa etc..) its always for the PS2 that they want it for. The PS2 is great for RPGs but other than that you can get anything decent and more on the Xbox and a better version of it.

360 -

*The team behind FF1 - 8 is now with micrsoft.. new game called Blue Dragon
*Microsoft end up buying the licenses or development teams of most good things (PGR, Pro Evo.. etc)
*Its not as powerful as PS3 but its easier to program for apparently.. only MGS4 looks better than Gears of war from the PS3 lauch titles.
*Ninja Gaiden 2!
*Its realtivly cheap look around for deals a basic one costs about 200 but for a 300 you can get a premium several games and an extra pad will save you lots of money in long run.
*Xbox live is exceptional.. gears of war is amazing on it + the live arcade stuff.
*If its for a kid alot of the games are shooters and sports ones so it might not be so suitable.

Wii -
*Controller is strange on first use but good.
*its can play Cube games and virtual console for older games as well, mario 64 on launch.
*Zelda is amazing, once again... fishing with the controller is great.
*It would be good for a kid if you can get over the controller.
*Tis only £180 but you will struggle to get one this side of xmas.

PS3 -

*Controller basically a hybrid of the 360 and wii.. which could be a good thing.
* Will be good for jap games again.
*is the most powerful but takes a brute force approach so the 360 can do more with its lot. They might be closer than many think.
*Metal gear 4 looks amazing on it, not for launch though.
*Is £425!!
*Again the games will be similar to the 360 so maybe not so suitable for a kid.

ok thats just my 2 cents in my house i use..

PC - internet and Football manager

360/Wii - games

DS - for wandering about

Can't give any advice...

But..

Thats Wiiiii thingy, does that mean in 2 player mode you can face your mates with the two handsets (say on a fighting game), and basically kick the hell out of each other using the handsets.....

Just imagining having a fight with a mate with these controllers, and being mimicd on the TV screen

Yes, Wii Sports Boxing (which comes free with the Wii) lets you do exactly that. You'll need to buy the second controller though.

Reviews say they didnt quite iron out the bugs in the control system so it's not that accurate. More a case of luck pulling off different moves. The next gen of fighting games on the Wii should be superb once the devs have more experience in the controller

Would have to say the 360 if it's for the eldest too...gear wars is the dogs "cough"
Wii is more of a family thing has one great game in Zelda the rest is more of a grab a friend etc and play so would be great for family stuff over xmas, if go for either try the Game store first for the bundles they do or the tin-ternet.

oh btw you can get gear wars as a package deal now
P.S I want the 360, love to play over the tin-ternet...the PS3 is going to be ages now something like march 2008 can't wait that long

I'm gonna wait and see what the PS3 has to offer then make a decision I am quiet taken with the X box at the moment but is that because it's here and available.

Having read bad things about the PS3 on the tech sites over the last couple of years there isn't a chance of me getting one of those. Esp if I have to remortgage my house to afford it :P

The 360 is great, but my laptop has better graphics and control cabailities so I don't need one of those.

The Wii just looks fun for casual gaming. Once I can get a go on one in a shop I'll decide if it's worth the cash...

Just me 2c

So after all of that, who is the console king?
PS3 looks like it's delivered, with huge potential, the xbox 360 leads the way with games and the wii, whilst fun, seems to be lacking in support.... (but I haven't played on any...)

Blimey!! Talk about dragging up threads!!

In the end I bought a PS2 (and light gun for me) and an XBox360 for the kids. I figured that was best of both worlds.

Now we just don't get much time to watch the TV, unless it's CBBC/CBeebies.

I would definitely say that the 360 has the edge on the PS3 at the moment. Ive not played the Sony but having bought the 360 i can thoroughly recommend one as in my opinion, due to the march it has on the PS3 for games/community etc, it will remain on top for sometime if not the duration of this next gen of consoles. The Wii sadly is already falling behind and having played on it on numerous occasions, I can say that I found it nothing more than a gamecube with a novelty pad. Sadly, for longevity, I cant see it lasting and know of more than one person who's sold their Wii after a few weeks of playing.

Interestingly, the PS3 doesnt seem to have as many outlets selling games as the 360 does...

I did notice most wii games are just adapted gamecube ones. The PS3 has a similar controller to the wii built in, so theoretically should offer the same fun. I was looking at prices of 360 vs ps3, it seems they're similar - by the time you've got the better 360 with the good dvd drive, plus the fact that the 360 requires a yearly network subscription when sony's is free

From Ebay, the subscription is less than £20 and its a much bigger network (at the mo)

Apologies if i'm repeating anything, but i'm half cut and can't be arsed to read the rest.

The Wii is great, easier to share, i never used to get to play my other games much coz it meant hogging the tv but with the wii it's more fun to play with others and even the wife enjoys it. The graphics are not as good but imo the gameplay is better.

Or upgrade your pc and play WOW.......:D :D

being bored to read through all 5 pages of valuable information here is my 2p :)

If I understood ur little ones problem then I believe he would need something that would also involve him making some body movements. If so then the Wii is your best option! most of the time you need to use both hands and probably be standing. So might be good for coordination etc etc.

Assuming the kiddo had no problems then I would go for the xbox360 premium package! basically graphics are a lot better and you get a huge variety of games plus there are ways of playing backup games (of ur own original ones ofcourse ;) )

Ebay is your friend if you're after a 360. PLenty enough on there.

PS3 don't even waste your breath on it. Not enough games, too expensive for yet another game console and tbh unless you will do things with the Linux side of the PS3 and use the bluray drive then save you £400+ for something else.

I'd vote for the wii if you're looking to improve the lad's hand-eye coordination and social skills.
