So, i've got 3 weeks off from next wednesday until the new year.
So I decided I needed something to do, and I like building/makeing things (rc helicopters, electical things, guitars, even tried black powder once (lets not go into that!)....)

So I have purchased one of these:
http://homepages.rya-online.net/steamboat/images/10vc.jpg

A stuart 10V steam engine which should hopefully look something like this when im finished [-o< :

Anyone else got anything to do?

Cool toys!

Cool toys!

Lovely, what about a boiler though?

I've got a 1971 BSA B25 to rebuild; an ex-Gloucestershire police patrol bike. The engine is in a *lot* of very small pieces.

I've got a compressor for now. A boiler might be the next project!

*somewhere* deep and dark in my dad's atic is a lovely steam engine that was given to me as a child, it will require quite a lot of work before it's finished but I just really don't have the time at present. Still winter's drawing in.... 8)

I also have a revel Ducati 996 model that I decided not to start a few years ago when I was short of time and step one was "assembling the chain"

Wow! I'd love one of those! I could build a vacum pump from it, and use it in the chemistry labs here at the uni (the vacum system isn't working, so we have electric pumps...only 3 to a class of 40 students. There's long queues)

Where did you get it from, and how much? I love engines and stuff

Does look cool. I don't have one, but I can think of about a million uses for that wheel...

Linky link (http://www.mamodspares.co.uk/product_details.php?category_id=76&item_id=154). Bit pricy though.

When its done, can you make a video and upload it on youtube? And show it all working :D

I can't afford the best part of £600 :(

Well, i have ordered the machined kit for the 10V directly from Stuart Models:

http://www.stuartmodels.com/inprod.cfm/section/machined

If your handy with a lathe they do the unmachined castings.

Or if your a useless klutz they also do pre-built kits, but wheres the fun in that?

It was quite expensive, but not £600!

I want the beam engine but that one is too expensive at £810

Mmmn, £63+VAT if you get the unmachined version, but surely you'd need a milling machine aswell as a lathe for that?

Then again you might get away with one of these lathes for £300
http://www.machinemart.co.uk/product.asp?p=060710250&r=2043&g=106
then a mill add-on for £175:

Hmmn, thats starting to get expensive too....

That is fantastic... I've got an exploded SV engine in the garage that I got for £40, and a good crank that cost me £25, which in theory is my winter project

That was assuming you had the tools, and know how to use them!

Although I am quite tempted to try the casting kit next time!

Was it a Mamod one? My brother had one of those as a kid too - I think he's still got it somewhere...

... either that or my Dad has it.

I was sooo jealous at the time, but being two years younger and a girl I didn't get cool stuff like that as pressies. :( *mutters* And I was more interested in it that he was, stupid brother prefering electronic stuff and his remote controlled car to good ol' greasy cogs n gears n wheels n steam engines n stuff. Meh.

This is my "project"

It started out like this:
http://upload4.postimage.org/1915311/hondou008.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/1915311/photo_hosting.html)

And then it looked like this:
http://upload4.postimage.org/1915306/hondou009.jpg (http://upload4.postimage.org/1915306/photo_hosting.html)

Its almost assembled now bar a few bits of plastic.
When its finished it should be a roadworthy winter hack.

It has a few issues to overcome first.
The positive battery lead is about three inches too short, so to run the bike you have to put the battery in sideways and gaffer tape it in.
The lemonade in the braking system needs replacing with brake fluid.
I'm going to (or get a man to) redo some of the dodgier looking welds.

blah blah blah
What is it? Chinese 'it?

Yes Chinese, Hongdou GY200, £674 (delivered) off ebay.
The quality is bit suspect but at that price for a brand new bike you can't complain really.
