View Full Version : Make Pointy louder!

Hello all
I am brand new to this forum but thought I should register because I ordered my new SV today! It's going to be my first bike and I can't wait to get it some time next week. I've gone for the SV Sport in silver.
Anyway... On with my question...
I've already decided to fit a Fuel can to make the bike louder, but I was wondering what else I can do to make more of a racket?
Do air filters make much difference? Only problem with that is that I've no power commander to re-map the fuelling.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Any bike without a baffle in will be loud enough! any louder and it would hurt! If your that bothered - just give it some more revs!

What he said.......
Welcome to the forum. Wait 'til you try the can first. Those "Fuel" things are great and well made too.
Cheers,
Garry
Replacing the snorkel with a sv1000 snorkel and raising the tank creates a lovely induction roar.
A power commander is not essential - Steve Jordan motorcycles can remap the stock ECU if necessary for a fraction of the price of a power commander to smooth out any lumps, however most people don't bother.
If you wanna hear a loud SV I suggest you have a listen to Thor's  He has a full Hindle exhaust system on it and it sounds the dogs dangales.
There's not much point raising the tank if you fit a sv1000 snorkel. And you get more of an induction roar if you just take the snorkel out anyway.
Matt is right though. It's a simple job for a garage to change the ecu maps in the standard suzuki box to match the new fueling mixture. I highly recommend it.
Finally, the loudest can we know of so far is the R6 can. It's not really a can at all. More of a trumpet.

Ooh ta!
Funny, I don't think of mine as loud. But then, I'm always sitting in front of the can exit point. :) It was bloody loud when I had no snorkel though.

no, not loud at all. Can you hear all the car alarms you set off over the top of the exhaust? Nope! :P

You haven't heard Stu's yet have you? :)
Hotter exhaust cams will make the bike louder, as well as making the sound "thicker"...

Me, I'm just wondering why would anyone be actively looking to make an SV louder than it is with a race can. Call me a miserable, spoil sport etc  but I don't just get it :smt102 .
Please bear in mind that I actually think the SV doesn't sound that bad on the standard can. Weird huh :)
Cheers

I have a full micron system with baffle removed. K&N Filter. Snorkel Removed. Power Commander and it sound superb. However earplugs are highly reccomended as you can feel a pressure difference under my helmet from the induction. But i just love the sound so its worth it.

Actually, I've only seen that happen once.
There is a VW Golf which parks in my carpark at work that I manage to set off every day just by starting my engine - god knows what it would do if i did a 'driveby'

Yep, I agree... If I could have mine sound much like it does, only quieter, I'd jump at it.
In London, you need all the help you can get to be noticed.

oh, and runnning the bike with a can and a different intake will damage the engine. Causes the bike to run lean, and slams the exhaust valves shut, reducing their life quite alot :? standard can does make a nice noise too, just a bit muted. i don't think its as bad as people make out, but sounds amazing without it! Does it need to be a suzuki dealer to remap the ecu? i'm keen to hear some Svs round manchester to hear how my exhaust compares, but i've only briefly seen one yellow curvy in months. Bummer!

Thats not strictly true mate. I have a power commander and ran it on a dyno. It now accounts for the extra air made available.

Even "just" with a race can, the SV will give you plenty of bang for your buck! 8) Full systems are generally louder, definetely so at high revs.
Airbox mods is the way to go for more induction roar. Imagine that sounds bloody good with the airbox right underneath your lid. Nice.Would get a PC111 if going down that route.
Does anybody still dump the airbox for individual filters anymore? On a FI SV?

Eh... What? Running lean, yes, can cause overheating, poor burning, all sorts of problems- burnt valve seats the most likely result, but it can be as bad as holed pistons in a really lean bike. But slamming the valves shut?

sorry- i meant without the remapping. With it there won't be any harm :) In fact my whole message was garbled :P i meant slamming the exhaust valves shut happens without enough back pressure - ie running without an exhaust. Need more sleep i think!

Thanks you for all your suggestions. I'll see what it's like with the Fuel can before I start to tinker around with anything else!
I didn't realise the stock ECU could be modified, what a result!
I've gotta Renegade race can on my pointy and that's plenty loud enough!! And the other day my 19 year old son was standing behind the bike, sort of inline with the rear of the can and I rev'd it, not a lot, well not red lining it anyway....result????? My son is now my daughter!!!!!!! The blast from the exhaust near enough blew his danglies off.......
Just that I'd let you all know
