View Full Version : Vstrom handguards on a pointy fairy
Don't ask me to justify it, but decided to get hand guards instead of heated grips.
If you're of a similar mind these photos might help.
Yes steering lock is slightly restricted, but I have tried to show that it's not by much - mainly because they look made for the bike and meet the fairing beautifully.

How much were they? Good mod that, always been tempted but I've got hardly any clearance with the LSLs.
£23 from your local Suzuki Dealer
Shocking photos  (taken at night) - but hope you get the idea

i've been tempted by that too - then you can leave them on all year round. Do they make much difference?
Now will they fit on curvies too?

do they go fast enough to justify handguards? ;)
do they go fast enough to justify handguards? ;)
Yes, for winter & car mirrors.
I've heard too many horror stories about people who've died in an off simply because rather than being catapulted over the offending car, their hands get caught in the guards and they get catapulted onto the offending car... :?
Nonononononononono... defo not a mod for me. :)

I haven't heard of bikers being thrown into other vehicles due to them, but still, the last line of Ping's post is perfect!
They'll look nice with the top box

Will have to back Ping up on this, as I have a mate who's a traffic copper in essex who has been to about 3-4 incidents where a biker has died because of these things. He recons that if they weren't fitted then the fellas wouldn't have died

Hmm, I have my doubts about that, they're not at all tight and not all that strong either. No offence to your mate, I just know how easy it is for people to make wrong conclusions- I was told several times in A&E once that I would probably have died, but certainly been messed up, in a pushbike crash if I'd not been wearing a helmet... Thing is, I wasn't

eh? think someones telling you porkies.
i've had too many accidents on traillies with handguards to think about incuding hitting a car head on. never had a problem because they bend.
Well my life's even more at risk now?
While they are very rigid, because they're attached at the bar ends as well. I think the chances of getting trapped in them are remote in the extreme. I would say less chance than having your hands trapped in Muffs (Nice!)
Also to note the bar ends are now slightly wider by the addition of a heavy weight spacer.

Funnily enough, I put mine on today as well. Your photos of the instructions definitely helped.
I reckon there's almost no chance of getting caught behind them. It might hurt but I reckon they're definitely coming off with me if I go flying.
I think if I angle the levers a bit better I can make it so they don't touch the fairing at all. I'll have another look on Saturday, I didn't even want to look at the bike after spending all day working on it.
Glad it helped someone :)
Did you get them 2nd hand without instructions?
I was thinking of loosening the clip ons and angling them back, but the nut started to round off so gave up. I think my levers are already angled well enough for the best lock.
Despite what you and Northwind say, I reckon they're on there pretty damn solidly, (but still plenty room to not get trapped in them)

Would they not twist around the bar, though? That's what the ones on the DL I tried did...
I can see you breaking all your fingers in a crash, mind :)

Don't get you? - The guards are solid on the levers - do you think the levers would twist?

Thanks for that

Hmm. Wonder if that DL had some other guards then, they weren't wrapped round the lever mounts like that- they wouldn't totally rotate, but they could be pushed around.

I can only go on what I'm told mate - and I have no doubt not to trust him, he's not anti-bike at all (I think he's really secretly pro-bike).
At the end of the day we are all grown up (just physically in my case), and we live how we want to live - if it works for you then why not?
Looks-wise I think it works well!!

The Vstrom is a DL650 :?
Er... yes?

You and Ben (elsewhere) seemed to say, use the DL one's instead of the Vstrom ones - made me look a fool at SJ's (not hard! )

There is also the DL1000

Nah.... not for me, you might as well have just got bar muffs, at least the would have kept your hands warmer. :P

When? I always like to call the Vstrom a DL because it makes me look knowing ;)

Muffs are a pain in the **** with the fairing. With some hassle they can be rigged so they're not dangerously pressing levers and restricting your movement, but I'd rather be a tiny bit colder and a lot safer.
I took my muffs off, it was just too dodgy. On the GT it was fine but the Sv's fairing gets in the way. Maybe when I do the riser bar conversion I might re-think it.

I guess I didn't understand you - Can't have been OEM the ones you tried. SJ did try to tell me the DRZ ones would fit easier.
I did have Muffs on - for 2 days! only problem was pressing against levers - And that was a BIG problem!
Also i do like to give little waves which I can, with guards but not Muffs.
Plenty warm enough with guards - but it's not been cold yet

Looks like its got ears
Would they help to protect the levers in an off? Or would they bend easily?

I can't imagine the levers being damaged at all with these on - but you might have to replace the guards instead

but then again, if the fella took the bus, rather than the bike, he probably wouldnt have died.

I've just bought some muffs, but had I not, I think I'd get these. I'm still a bit undecided on the muffs- keep my hands warmish, but they were a pig to fit and need re-adjusting evey few rides (otherwise they foul the levers). I leave them on the bike too, but luckily so far no one has tampered with them. If they do go walkies/cause me problems, I think I'll invest in a pair of these.
As to them being dangerous, broken fingers perhaps, but I can't imagine theyd stop me being thrown off. If they were that bad; MCN would of run a scare story half a dozen times on the subject by now if they were.
