Heya, just passed my A2 test and am looking at getting an SV. What do you all think of them? are they nice to ride? I currently have an NSR125.
I like the pointy ones, but would consider a curvy lol. Help me

Asking the converted here matey! They are an ace first bike and keep many of us more 'experienced' riders happy. You won't regret buying one. Get a curvy, they are faster!!

And Welcome to the Mad House!!

It's always hard to describe how a bike feels. All I can tell you is that the SV is one of those bikes that is definitely more than the sum of its parts. It's cheap, and a great starting point. Have a ring round to local dealers to see if you can get a test ride.

hi mate, firstly welcome to the site,
well firstly i went straight onto a curvy after passing my test, and i love it, i have never ridden b4 my test, (properly that is) and i found it great, love every second i get to spend on her!!!
i would say that its a good first real bike, it is is very different to your 125, and there will be some people out there that will say that you shouldn't get a twin for your first bike because of the engine breaking, but as long as you bare this in mind when you start riding and learn to give the engine a little blip on the down shifts you will be fine, and then you can just go out and have fun!!!!

It's how cheap? and insurance is how much? more giggling, it is fun!

Nice nice nice :D, thing is with regards to test rides, dont think I could get one as I'm 18 and passed my test yesterday lol. although iv had my bike on a cbt for like a yr. Ill have a look though. I read bout blipping sumwhere. Should I practice that on my bike?

To be honest it depends on the dealer. Some will let anyone ride, others are arsey. I got a test ride on a daytona 650 the week after my test. It depends on their insurance really.

Hi kinamod, congrats on passing the test
I think I've replied to one of your posts before on the londonbikers site.

I have a restricted SV650 black naked curvy, I passed the A2 in October.
It's great, although I have dropped it twice, no major damage, but could've been worse if it was fared.

I love it now I've had it all adjusted to fit me, didn't take long to get used to after my yammy 125. 8)

Good luck!

I've been riding mine for about a month now since passing my full test (it was my first bike too!) and I love it. It's a pointy! I paid £2500 for it and as far as I'm concerned that's the best two and a half grand I've ever spent!!!! :D

But not just some of the time every single minute of it - driving slow, when it is p***ing down, in heavy traffic, oh yeah and fast is quite good too!!!

You only have to touch the throttle and you will find yourself giggling and grinning from ear to ear, especially with the sound from it. Buy one they're great.

Watch out for that engine braking too, until a previous posting in the week I thought it was just me.

Can anyone tell me more about how to combat it? I'm getting used to it but it has almost caught me out once or twice......

i came up from a rs125 in january to the sv650 mate, i went for the pointy, i like the style, also Fuel injection, very easily to restrict (done with a cdi box) so when my 2 years is up next april i can just plug in my full power cdi and doulbe the horses)

bit hard getting used to engine braking as the rs didnt have any being a 2 stroke, but its a nice bike to ride, feels alot faster than the rs even at 33bhp, id go for a pointy one, but alot of poeple like their curvey ones

but i think the more "young" generation like me prefer the pointys, im 19 btw,

if u can get a test ride on one id do it, i did befor i got mine, went to a dealers, thye restricted one down and took me out for a test ride, (accompnied) liked it and brought one that day,

It actually caught me out last night as well. Changed down mid bend on a roundabout (with the clutch by the way folks!) & locked the rear for a moment  Back end stepped out a little, but recovered it easily.

If you want to combat engine braking, stay in a higher gear longer, but I wouldn't do that myself. I prefer to USE the engine braking. Last night only caught me out because I was flustered from a ****** being stupid, and was reflecting on that, instead of what I was doing. I simply hit a gear too low for my speed.

If you want to avoid the rear locking up, just think about your ride, and if it happens, just remember that yanking hard on the clutch lever removes the engines driving force from the back wheel!

Personally, I've ridden a lot in fields on various bikes. I've also ridden in some places I shouldn't (because it's not quite legal, and because I tended to get hurt a lot, but it was legal). Then I started riding a CG125 on the roads (legally I might add!), and came to the SV650S (pointy) shortly afterward's. Just remember that the throttle is more responsive than what you're used to, and you'll be fine ;)

I was lucky last night, and today the weather isn't as nice, so ride carefully folks :)

Also been riding mine (a pointy) for about a month now, it's also my first bike :)

I've been surprised by the engine braking aswell, snicked down to second for a roundabout in the first week or so, just as I was getting more confident, and as I let the clutch go I could feel the rear starting to slip, so I just pulled the clutch in a bit again. I realised I needed to work on my rev-matching on downchanges and that's what I've been focusing on practicing since then :)

Oh joy!

How much skill is there to that? I thought you had to do that on any bike? Unless it's just me being ott. I do it on my NSR after reading a site, I do all the stuff now lol. Its really good. Cnt remem the name tho, but it has all sorts bout cornering etc.

Neway, I'll jus keep my eye out for a cheap one. Gna hav 2 match the price of my NSR so seems I wont be able to get the newer pointy one.

I don't blip. It's not required.

A little skill, but as I have mastered it, not a lot! If you are already doing it on your NSR, then you might just need to refine it a little as a 4-stroke v-twin is less forgiving that your NSR.

My first bike was an NSR125ss great bike not very reliable I bought mine brand new looks bigger and better than it is!! from this went to a CBF600n novelty of the extra power wore off after about a month and ended up hating it as it was vefy heavy and cumbersome and was quite happy when it was nicked only ****ed off that I had to drive to work for a month! then got my SV650s brand new sept 2005 and still love it!!! Fantastic bike still keeps me interested sounds great with the race can on!!! Would love a GSXR750 but insurance is too much! :( but the SV is great!!! :D

Well for one thing they don't teach you to operate both front brake and throttle and the same time on a DAS course, quite the opposite in fact. I got a couple of tellings off for that in fact. I'm sure it's not the toughest thing to do in the world, certainly no harder than a heel-toe downchange in a car, but practice makes perfect and if I said I was doing it perfectly every time after just 1 month of not a great deal of riding, I think you'd all know I was lying.
