View Full Version : Fave music of 06
Org members, in the end of year tradition list your top 3 albums of 06 for approving nods and withering riddicule.
Cansei de ser sexy - CSS Catchy-as-hell Brazilian pop from foul mouthed jailbait, sweet.
Mastodon - Blood Mountain Metal's always been tricky for me, when it's good it's great but way too much of it is just sounds like the sixth form band from your worst nightmares. I bought this because I saw Josh Homme guesting and I'm glad I did. Great Album
Midlake - The Trials of Van the Occupanther Sounds like a mix of Mercury Rev, Neil Young and Fleetwood Mac, and if that's not enough to send you running it's a concept album too. :D Fantastic first six tracks.
live after death - iron maiden
kill em all - metallica
f**k the system - exploited
ok i know these are not 06 albums...but all as the albams released in 06 were poo i cheated

ohh yeah that snow patrol album is ace as well
not forgetting the Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium, awesome
there's been a lot of good music this year
Fratelli's: Costello music
Arctic Monkeys
Dunno a third one, really...
Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam
Audioslave - Revelations
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
I didn't get many new albums this year.
Best one was
Thursday - A City By The Light Divided.
It's good-ish, still better than most music nowadays but still not as good as their previous albums.
The other 2 2006 released ones I got were distinctly average.
If I didn't spend all my money on the SV I would have got the Muse, Audioslave and Stone Sour albums. Feeder singles album would be good as well.

Various Productions - The World is Gone
Kode 9 & The Spaceape (okay, most of it is so-so, but "9 Samurai" is soooo good)

Best album this year by far (IMHO) has got to be Arctic Monkeys followed by Snow Patrol's Eyes Open. Third place would probably go to Sam's Town by The Killers but I've been banned from buying it until at least Boxing Day
Alright, Still by Lily Allen has got to be worth a mention too.

Wasn't at Reading was it? Guy from work went to that one and got three of his ribs broken in the mosh pit :D

Oh Yeah, I'd forgotten about that one. Fantastic track
I'd go with Datarock - Computer Camp Love as my fave single, The Grease soundtrack meets Kraftwork. Not quite as awful as it sounds :D
Mogwai - Mr Beast
Sigur Ros - Takk
Joanna Newsom - Milk-eyed Mender
Can't argue with any of those didn't know Mogwai had a new one out though, sweet. I didn't think Takk was their best album but it's still stunning. Don't have the M.E.M album but I got Ys last month and that's great.

You'll definitely like the Milk-eyed Mender - I really wish I had been quicker at getting tickets to see her in January - ~£130 each is a bit steep on eBay!
Also check out Auto Rock from Mr Beast - superb track.

What do you reckon was Sigur Ros' best then Smurf? Just can't get enough of that ambient Icelandic euphoric rock but I'm willing to bet there's some pish out there...

I think most of what I think are new albums are just new to me... And I'm no good at keeping track of when things came out. But I'm pretty sure Muse's Black Holes and Revelations was this year. Not their best album IMO, but still great.
My Chemical Romance's Black Parade- fantastic, just a great classic rock album really. Though I'm sure a lot of cool rock people would shun it because it's "emo", or more likely because it's too popular
Ah, excellent, Kill Your Own by Hundred Reasons was this year it seems, I'll have that. Incredibly good album...
Ah, sod, now I've remembered Tragedy Rocks by the Crimea. That's a better allround album than the Muse one. But maybe doesn't have the highlights.

Oh Agaetis Byrjun, no doubt about it. Listened to it hundreds of times over the years, still no idea what he's singing about but it doesn't matter, Just heatbreakingly beautiful.
Not always easy to find these days, If you have trouble getting hold of it PM me an address I'll send you a copy.
Towers of London - Blood Sweat and Towers
Motorhead - Sucker
Tapes n Tapes - The Loon
Easy!
ditto on the my chemical romance - cheesy but great
The Drams - Jubilee Dive. Has a definite early Soul Asylum/Mats vibe
The Marked Men - Fix My Brain. Great catchy garagey/new wave punk
Reigning Sound - Home for Orphans. http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/21484/Reigning_Sound_Home_for_Orphans

I saw them live in Leeds and based on that I wouldn't buy the album ;)

Leeds festival? They did OK at Reading, but I wasn't blown away. Good reaction to being bottled to death, but they didn't really do a good set... Barrowlands show was great though.
Yup, I was pretty close and their stuff just didn't work for me, plus the lead singer has a squeaky speaking voice.

The CD's I've brought this year have all been great.
I have particularly enjoyed listening to The Odessy, by Symphony X; Follow the Reaper, by Children of Bodom, and The Seventh Sign, by that crazy dude, Yngwie Malmsteen.
Ok, not recent albums. But its what my music of '06 has all been about. Neo-classical, sweep-picking madness...
