Can anyone recommend one of these. Want one with built in hard drive, and network connection (ideally wireless-but not essential).

Would like to be able to play music & pictures through it, not too worried about movies.

Don't want to have to leave PC on (so not really after a simple streamer), and similarly would like not to have to wonder up & down stairs to update it, hence the network bit.

Any suggestions or recommendations???

Get an old Xbox, chip it, load XBMP, (xbox media player), add a wireless lan extender if required, job more than done.

That's a cracking idea from Tigersaw. You can a modded XBox on eBay for under £50 now. It's a standard 8 or 10GB HDD depending on model but you can just put a normal IDE HDD in and download Slayers EvoX installer (it's free) and have a sweet media centre for not a lot of cash.
