View Full Version : LCD TVs - anyone got any suggestions?
Hiya,
Was thinking about buying a new TV soon. Would be looking to get something 36" or better, and with a good picture. Anyone got any recommendations? It's been a while since I had a look at TVs.
Cheers!
John
don't pay the price in the shops!
go to the auctions!!!:)
oh and make sure its HD ready.....more details on that can be found on google or comet website
Stick with the old fashioned sets, they use a lot less juice and show the same garbage.
Went round the neighbours the other day, they even have a funny wide flat one that shows the pictures in colour
They tell me it even has more than three channels n all  Must have money to burn

Got myself a Samsung 32ins LCD in October 2005 for £700, a bargain at the time. Prices have dropped since.
The picture depends on the source material and your aerial. Freeview looks a bit ropey due to the lack of space to broadcast (once analogue is switched off, the signal will improve as there will be more bandwidth space to play with).
However, get the signal right and LCD/plasma looks amazing. I run a Marantz DVD player into the Samsung with component cables (no HDMI on the player). My test discs are Terminator 2: Judgement Day and Superbit versions of the two Spiderman films. LCD/Plasma can be compaired to a GSXR 1000 and an old CRT to a 30 year old C90 that never been serviced!! Lets say LCD/Plasma is far better!

I bought a philips 37 inch LCD last month at Comets, £830 (but hurry, its £899 in the sales lol).
Originally I was going for an LG, but went off it after playing with it in the shop, it seemed to have trouble scaling properly, compared side to side with others.
Its an absolutely staggering picture, when fed with an HD source, or xbox 360. Since I dont watch normal TV anyway, not worried about its freeview tuner or normal AV input. I coupled it with a Philips upscaling hdmi dvd, and although you cant get more quality out of a dvd that wasnt there in the first place, they have never looked so good.
Word of warning about size, I was originally going for 32 inch, but it looked weedy in the shop, so went for 37. When installed at home, its kinda big, almost too big. After seeing mine, the G/F went out and got a 50 inch Sony Bravia, very nice, but too big - overwhelming in fact, bit like going to the pictures and sitting at the front.
My tosh 32 old fashioned TV has been going strong for over 10 years and refuses to die. I'd like a new TV, but I don't need one, I dont want to pay for Sky HD/ Telewest HD tv, (nor have a xbox 360) HD DVD's are still arguing over the standard, and theres no HD DVD's out yet, so I'll be sticking with my old one, until it dies... or until london gets switched to digital (2012 I think),
in the next few years they'll drop even further in price, and technology will improve, meaning you get more for your money.
HD and Blu-Ray DVD's have been out for a while now. If oyu fancy paying £15 for the fast and the furious on HD-DVD instead of £4.99 on DVD. It's madness.

to be honest, you wont notice any difference in watching a blu-ray to a normal dvd.
Looking too m8, was thinking this is the right time to buy with the sales going on.
Been through which and a few mags on what to buy but most recommend the £1400 jobbies which I don't have that sort of money to play with
Anyway sofar looking at Richersounds as they do a 3 year warranty with all their tellys

As for Richers sounds, unless you want to spend weeks returning your product, then just dont. I have NEVER managed to get a piece of equipment form there that didnt require retuninging and thier 3 year warranty is crap.
Did out Coombest, drop him a PM or someting. This guy installs this stuff for a living and what he dont know aint worth it.
Personaly id go for a Sony Bravia 32". £899 in M&S at the moment. They are all much of a muchness and will improve with technology. if you are going to mount it on the wall, then shop around for the brackets. They can vary an immense ammount. From £25 to over £500!!

Don't get one that is too big for your room. There is an optimum distance (ie minimum) that you should be sitting away from the screen depending on the screensize. A friend bought one that was too big for his size room, and it's virtually unwatchable.

My 42 inch uses 400w when on and 1.2w in standby. Peanuts.

Nonsense my good man. Maybe on a standard tv, but link it up to a HD TV and you can clearly see the difference, it's remarkable.. Question is, are you prepared to pay through the nose to get it, or wait a year and watch those prices tumble.
Just bought a 23" JVC LCD for the bedroom, was reduced from £750 to £480 in the sales, picture is excellent, i didn't bother with HD as i will never have cable or SKY let alone pay them more for the HD subscriptions & i won't be replacing my 300+ DVD collection with HD ones, i might get an HD TV though when the BBC broadcast it in 2012.
IMPO make sure what you get is digital compatable & forget about HD at the moment, phase one HD is already out of date & phase two is starting to hit the shelves which has even better picture quality.
Hopefully I can help with this.
LOOK INTO IT is the 1st bit of advice.
DON'T buy from the majors (Comet, Dixons etc....) is the 2nd bit of advice.
We've just started building our entertainment system. It took me months to research into it all, whats required, whats good, whats not etc....
Firstly, type of TV wanted....
20" - 32" = Go for an LCD screen.
42"+ = Go for a Plasma screen.
Don't bother going in-between, the technology on LCD isn't advanced enough to go big, and plasmas don't really work best when on a smaller screen. This was the advice i was given by a proper home cinema center who wasn't trying to sell me this and that. I went to Curries and other electronic stores, not 1 store gave me any factual information and they just tried to sell me the tat...
Have a look on this website as well...

We ended up going for a "screen only." Its bascially like a PC monitor, doesn't work unless something is plugged into it. The screen is just literally a screen, then we bought a HDMI slot to go inside. This means I only need 1 cable going from my TV down to my Amp, and everything plugs into the amp. Screen hasn't got speakers, no in-built free view etc, yet it still cost £1435!!!! (mind you, wasn't even in the country at the time  ).
So thats a 42" Plasma, with nothing else for £1435...
Yet you can go to any high street store and get a 42" screen for like £700??
Plug them in and see the difference in quality.. Its all about the things the screen can do, the amount of colours, contrast ratio etc etc... A £700 screen with freeview, speakers etc all built in, will not be half as good as a higher quality screen.
Bear in mind, whatever you buy, it will be out-dated in 6 months time.
Thats why i went for a screen only. The details on it are great, but if i ever want to upgrade to the 1080, all I need to do is take out the board and get a new one.
My advice, look into it, if you research more, you can get a MUCh better screen for your money.

IMO CRT can still make more sense for medium sized screens... A year ago my Panasonic was £270 for a 28", and has better picture quality than I've seen on most similiar sized LEDs costing twice as much. It's not HD though, just a very good old-standard tube. Of course, it's the size of a car, which would be considered a disadvantage by some :) And it weighs as much as a grown man- when I helped my brother move into his 4th floor flat I wished he'd bought an LCD not a big CRT...
But then, because they're so unfashionable, and physically awkward to stock and distribute, a lot of companies have pretty much got out of the CRT market- there's less choice and less price competition than there was a year ago...
Been playing around a bit and so far this is what I have come up with Toshiba 37WLT66 £758.01 and
£169.00 for a 3 year warranty from Digitaldirect.co.uk...was going for a 32 but hey

I like the 68s minimalist look. i.e. 32WLT68 32" - price is hiking from my£600 spend - also only want 26".
