View Full Version : Whats in your Bike Tool Kit?
I currently have the standard bike tool kit and it needs a bit of tweaking and updating.
I wondered what would be the essentials in your ultimate tool kit to carry on the bike - i.e. What would be needed for all those on road running repairs and hassle saving items.
Any other additions to this...
- Standard Kit
- Gaffer Tape
- Small Mole Grips (on Jambo's recommendations)
- Some sort of puncture repair kit

i got standard tool kit, a fiver, puncture repair kit and an AA card.
Nothing, no toolkit on the bike.
standard kit
Multi allen key folder
1/4" mini socket set
LED torch
In the new year I'm gonna add a puncture kit and a vac packed hi-viz vest/belt.
most of the above, plus spare batteries for the torch, and some disposable plastic gloves.
A tyre valve angle thingy, saves having troube with some of those garage air machines that won't quite fit the valve.

Brilliant idea! Always have trouble with those darn things.

Whilst on the subject of useful things and I'm still sober this new years eve...
Just another thought, not my idea but someone elses used for rideouts, a note of cotact details in case of an emergency, laminated ideally, not for the toolkit but to carry on your person.
Apart from the standard SV toolkit, I've got a roll of tape and a wee tin of WD40

Set of sockets (3/8 )
Ratchet (3/8 )
Set of spanners (8 - 14? or there abouts)
Philips or Pozi screwdriver (not sure which, i think its a pozi)
Flat Head Screwdriver
3inch? socket extension (3/8 )
A couple of torx sockets (3/8 )
T handle (for sockets/extension and torx bits) (3/8 )
Think thats about it, i had some gaffa tape under there at one point as well.
It's a triumph...Can you tell!

Cable ties a good idea. Levers as well - if not tempting fate a little.
Also under my pillion seat i got a hockey puc,
I assume you use it to put under the side stand if you're parking off road?
I carry the standard tool kit, a set of allen keys and a tin of chain lube. Need to get a wee cheapy LED torch to put under there too.

Not much just now, because the pouch I used to use exploded under the pressure of keeping it all in :) Still got what I call the bare essentials- wee Maglite, mobile phone emergency charger, some cash, breakdown company details, an old baseball cap (for keeping my head dry when stopped!) and the all important small roll of Duck tape. Stopped carrying gaffer tape once I found this stuff, it's stretchy and works well in the wet. Also got a set of levers and a puncture repair kit taped inside the front fairings.
Usually there'd be a hi-viz vest but it's in the back pouch of my winter jacket instead just now, and often being worn... No better time to be visible than when you're broken down at the side of a road
Teng Tools do a really need little socket set that'd be good for a small underseat kit:

You'd want to change the wee screwdriver bits for better allen heads and less flat heads I reckon. And if you carry loads of small tools, a bit of steel pipe to use as an extender can be handy.

I carried decent set of spanners, a set of snap on 3/8 drive sockets/ratchet. Phillips and flat screw drivers. a pair of pliers, 3 ft of wire, insulating tape, rubber gloves, tie wraps and a couple of scotch lock connectors under my seat for 3 years and never used them once. The SV never broke down. I regularly checked the harness and found at least 2 chaffing faults before they they caused problems.
OK, I ride in fair weather only and probably maintain my bikes to a more demanding service regime than the manufacturers recommend. But I guess the preventive maintenance pays off.
