View Full Version : conndensatation
right............ how do i stop it .......as my bike is always damp wich cant be good
& how is it caused?????
Condensation, or "sweating," is a natural occurrence on all windows and is caused by excess humidity, or invisible water vapor, present in the air. When this water vapor comes in contact with a surface which is at a cooler temperature, the vapor turns to visible droplets of moisture.
Use fans in bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms to circulate the air.
Air out your home frequently by opening doors and windows.
Reduce the number of indoor house plants, as plants increase humidity levels.
Use a dehumidifier to remove excess humidity from the air.

were not all as edjukated as you Ed
I've just bought a dehumidifier for my flat, coz the condensation is causing the walls to get a bit mouldy. Cost about £100, and it seems to have done the trick. Maybe look at investing in one for the garage? Have you got power in there? If not I think you can get non-powered ones, but dunno how good they'd be.

Stick polystyrene sheets to the underside of the roof to get rid of 80% of it and do the walls if you want more. Even the thin stuff on a roll will be a help.

If your bike is away for the winter then you can get a cover which goes right over the bike, you then attach your hoover to it to remove all the air and create a vacuum. Therefore you don't get any moisture. 8) Not sure where its available from though, and not much use if you use your bike over the winter

Well there aint no way my bike is getting out in this slippery, salty weather :smt120
Just yesterday I crashed my car on the slippy ice, it spun out of control at 40mph on a straight dual carriageway. Its a scary thing when you find yourself facing on-coming traffic
The rear bumper is ruined and the exhaust was ripped off while I was sliding sideways, with the rear of the car scrapping along the wire barriers in the central reservation........now wheres the number for the scrappie :(
you stopped your garage leaking yet? That might have something to do with it...
how about glueing carpet tiles or polystyrene tile to the inside?
You can only get rid of condensation or any water by good ventilation. Even if you insulate, you will still get condensation (and in fact more so) and as already mentioned above condensation will form on the coldest surface. Good idea in putting a blanket or similiar on bike, the condensation is still around but at least not on the bike so much. :)
what do you mean by " good ventilation"? i cant open the window as its just one pain of glass.
the only other thing i can think of is an extractor fan?

Ok, what you need to do is reduce water and increase ventilation:
Unless its peeing down make sure the bike is as dry as poss before putting it into the garage
Let the beast cool before putting it away
Try leaving the doors open for a while.
make sure there is space for air circulation around the bike
i have two bikes in the garage, no window but rarely have condensation. I do the above and chamois the bikes down if they're wet/been washed but have to put them in garage but leave door open for a while. Less moisture, no heat, better vent = lower risk of condensation :)
