View Full Version : Oil filters
Am i best to stick with a Suzuki oil filter or are the pattern ones available just as good/better/adequate etc?
I've used a K&N one but was disappointed with corrosion, don't see the point of the chrome for me as I'm not really into bling

Morning all.
I always recommend using a genuine filter on any bike. I know that they're more expensive than pattern ones but it really is a small price to pay.
I had a customer down south who used a pattern filter on his SP1 and knackered the motor, due to the first SP1's needing a different filter to subsequent models.
If you must use a pattern filter, go for a Hi-flow one, as they often list different filters for different model years, whereas most other pattern manufacturers don't. This suggests to me that they do their homework.
Cheers.
I have used 2 HG ones now and the paint comes off pretty quickly!

Seconded. I've only used one, but it looked scabby after only a month or two's use.

Also found the champion filter sold in Halfors to have suspect quality. They don't even have a dust seal on them and I've had to take one back that had more than just dust particles on it.
I'll agree with spannerman regards the Hi-flow filters. Looks comparable to OE from what one can see.

I just ordered an OE one from here: A Link (http://www.gear4bikes.com/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?REFPAGE=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2egear4bikes% 2ecom%2facatalog%2fSuzuki_Air_Filters%2ehtml&WD=sv650s&PN=Suzuki_Oil_Filters1%2ehtml%23a17028)
Bear in mind that price doesn't include VAT or shipping.

Ash, I'd stick with the original if I was you -if you don't want to give them monkeys in GTs your money Dammerels normally have them in stock around £6 if I remember rightly.

Ah, someone else who found the K&Ns go manky! Most people mocked me :) I've used Champion and OEM as well and neither caused my engine to explode, but I'd use OEM for preference. It's not as though it makes a noticable difference in price, spreading a couple of quid over the life of a filter. Might very well be that there's others that are just as good though.

I use the Hein Gericke ones as they come free with the oil,and not had any problems, but I do change the filter with each oil change instead of every other change as Suzuki require.

GT's is on the way to work for me so its easier to go there and i've never had a problem with the parts department, just the amateurs in the work shops
I do like dammerals though, always got sales on leathers and helmets, saved Nealy £400 on my jacket and jeans from them and £100 off my last helmet 8)
just out the blue and probably of no interest to any one but have you seen the chrome oil filter covers. they look well smart, just pick the best filter to suit you and whack this cover on it..only problem is is that i cant remember where i saw them.doh

K&N do a chrome filter, if the chromings as good as the paint on there other filter, i'd leave it well alone
