View Full Version : Average Speed Cameras on A2
I went down to Gravesend on the A2 earlier and once you get to the M25 junction the speed limit slows down to 50 Mph as you go through road works.
This speed limit is policed with those average speed cameras, which only appear to point towards you, thus only getting the front of your vehicle. Am I correct in thinking this or is there some way that they are capturing the back too? I couldn't see anything.
If the above is the case then motorbike riders are totally free to go as fast as they like without the fear of losing their license on this stretch of road, not that we would officer!
???
Somebody was telling me that an 'official' announcement has been released stating that if vehicles pass a set of cameras in say lane 2 and then swithch and pass through the next set of cameras in say lane 1 then the cameras cannot calculate the average speed  you always hear these sort of things so i'm not sure how true it is...
I guess if the cameras are all facing the fornt of vehicles then bikes don't really need to worry :)

I don't know about the specific lanes mentioned, but err, it's true ;)
Personally, I make sure, by starting in lane 3, and finishing in lane 1. Or vice versa.
I don't speed officer, obviously, as I haven't had a ticket yet :)
EDIT: Be careful though if it's a regular route. If you're seen to be having a laugh, they make a point of having the last laugh.

i believe this is true but im not sure about the officialness of it, but if you think about it the avergae speed will be differnet over a mile if you "weave" than if you go in a straight line.. :D

But if you "weave", you'll have travelled further.......
So if you still do the route too quickly it can only mean you've been going even faster. I wouldn't rely on this lane changing method folks.
Also bare in mind you'll stand out that much more to to any coppers on the road, as you'll be able ot be zooming past all the other traffic.
But, with all that in mind, one's which measure oncoming traffic cannot see your plate, & therefore can't get ya, but they don't have to face forward.

that doesn't matter if you been weaving going faster because they have no evidence of that? or how many times you would have changed lanes so no accurate way of working it out?
no evidence no prosecution...
Dont forget that the speed limits in roadworks sections is there for your and roadworkers safety.
Also, that particular set of roadworks is monitored by CCTV so if you persistantly break the speed limit I would imagine the old bill would not have too much trouble tracing you and they would have enough evidence to prosecute.
I can't see the problem if you stick to the limit
I spoke to a :plod: that I know earlier and he said that the data from all cameras is stored on one system so the lane changing idea probably isn't correct as the information would be colated from all cameras.
Either way, imo for the extra couple of minutes it takes to stick to the limits through that roadworks section it's probably worth slowing down than risking points and a fine.

Correct...
For the sake of a few extra minutes is it really worth risking your neck or those working to make the road better?

Exactly, it really ticks me off to have an irresponsible fool tear past me when im sat at the limit in roadworks. The limit is there for the safety of the workers, and that of the drivers too.
Fine, if you want to endanger your own life then do so without putting the lives of others at risk too.
I'm not targetting my anger at you, krhall - just those sort of people in general. I understand you just asked out of interest.
Pete
On the way home the traffic is quite bad, im usually doing more like 30mph for my own saftey.
On the way to work though, i still do the normal speed limit, only if the traffic is good (not tooo bad once your past the M25 exit sliproad). Again, traffic permitting. I don't ride like a loon, but i continue to filter. The cameras pick up registration plates, you have no markings for them to pickup..
And its going to get much worse, have you noticed the camera frames now go all the way from the M25 down to the M2/Wainscott bypass now.......
Heres looking to another 1.5 years worth of nightmare traffic.
TBH though, i get people come flying past me also.
I looked at them a couple of weeks ago and it looked like they had turned a camera around.
i'll double check tonight, but i've not noticed any of them turned around.
But..
Theres only 2-3 cameras, so if 1 is turned round it can't work as it does the average speed. Would need 2 doing at the least.
I was in my car with my two year old son at the time so couldn't study them, but just thought I'd ask the question.

At least the finished product will make it a lot easier to navigate 8)
aye, but as always, deal with the problem when its already a problem and not before...

I got no sympathy on here when I moaned about the M42 around Birmingham, dug up as it was for 2 years with SPECS (which are now permanent BTW). Why should the south-east be any different?

It all depends on how old the Specs system is. The older systems could only cover 1 lane but newer specs systems can cover multiple lanes and areas.

having err tested the said a2 cameras i can say i have not recived anything throught the post yet.
this was @ 1am tho dunno if the cameras turn off then :? don't think they turn at all tho tbh
I went down to Gravesend yesterday taking the kids swimming and noticed that they seem to be installing them all the way to Nells Cafe turn off. Only the posts are there at the moment, but I have no doubt the cameras will soon follow.

Tsk, all these speeding bikers see

Yup, They had average speed camera's on the M4 a short time ago heading from Newbury to Bristol. One was pointing the opposite way to all the others.
Slightly off topic. Coming home from Soho on a Friday night, nearly every single time on the motorway the speed limit is reduced down to 50 mph or less. Or the lane closed warnings are lit on the gantry's. Just about every single time I have never seen a reason why the speed restriction has been enforced and nine times out of 10 the lane has not been closed at all. Hardly surprising then that so many people completely ignore them. I'm not just talking about a few hundred yards either, I've seen the restriction last for 5 miles or more.
Damn annoying it is. Anyway, back to the topic...

Whats wrong with the pools in dartford then?
What's right with them!!!!!
What's right with them!!!!!
Just seems a bit odd going to the pool in gravesend when you live in dartford...thats all.
I personally go to the one at next generation but thats 'coz I go to the gym there anyway.

Nells Cafe is my junction. GRRRRR.
Jdubya, well if its anything like when I used to go to the pool in Dartford, it'll be full of young rude boys kicking the hell out of each other.. Gravesends quieter.
And thats why I pay through my nose to go to a private pool...

My nice little secluded bungalow was demolished to make room for that satanic place! £100 a month rent gone! Just so a load of posers can stand around chatting to each other and look at themselves in mirrors... GO TO A PROPER GYM!

Tis the only gym round here that isn't packed full of yobs and boy racers...so I guess I'll just continue posing then :P

At least when the work is done people will stop whinging about the ruts that run the length of the A2 from Hall Road to Cobham...
To bump this, jdubya, yeah, all they need to do is sort out the 1ft bloody gaps between the M25 and the Dartford Heath junction (London bound). Those bikts literally fire me accross lanes....
Just an update, the cameras at the Cobham/Gravesends East junction, some of them now face the other way (rearwards facing) so they can get rear registrations plates. I don't know how this works, but they wouldn't turn them round for no reason.
I noticed it the other day, it seems they are trying to catch the bikers out who filter between the traffic now
Im still unsure how they work, 1 camera for 1 lane, or 1 camera covers multiple lanes? Its just at Cobham area theres like 2-3 cameras each way, yet at the REAL danger area under the M25, theres only 1???
Logic??? A2 users beware.
Yep, I saw those rearward facing camera's the other day as well...definately put the brakes on the old triumph when going past there. BUT there are still cars and bikes going though there at about 70mph so I hope they are getting fined;)
Jdub, what Triumph you on? What time you travelling as im sure I pass a yellow one every so often as im nearing London.
They are everywhere on the A2 now - the ones facing the other way catch the opposite carriageway don't they?
Daimo hows the bandit?

I ride a Daytona 955i, 06 essex plate with union jack nose cone. Nope, that wouldn't be me coz I work from home and am studying at the moment...when I do need to get into the smoke I normally go by train coz I need to lug a laptop and stuff with me and when I go to class its always M25 then via surrey into tolworth. And when I go to the driving range at cascades its always in the car;)

I thought this, but looking at the angle, the one going coastbound get the London bound 3rd lane, and the one on the londonbound side get the rear end of 3rd lane LB traffic.
Luckily i come on at Gravesend east anyway.
Bandits good. Get another 50 miles out the tank which is another day without filling up, but costs me £15 opposed to £12.50 for the SV.
Definatly not as exciting (still limited to sub 6k, got its 1st service tomorrow, then 1000rpm more for every 100 miles), but its SO much more comfy to ride. Engine is VERY smooth compared to the SV, but i miss the SV engine noise and the instant low down power off the lights. Digi speedo and fuel gauge is cool, and the top box is well handy. Riding position is more upright and comfy for commuting, but im missing the sports bike ride already. But it is better for what i need it for. Best get saving for a sports bike then  (I wish....)
Already fitted bungs, front mudguard extension, rear hugger and tank side protector (like a clear film).
Krhall, do you come through blackheath commen as im sure i passed an SV the same as yours last night, it got caught between the lanes of traffic and i was filtering along the outside (just before the T junction lights before the roundabout (after the esso)).
Jdub, nope, not you, although it is a 955 in yellow with union jack on the front side panels.
Just been passed there again and it looks like they are deffo facing the rear of the vehicles passing...but then the other option I thought about was that they could have been placed there for when they put in a contraflow?

Could be me! I do go that way and getting caught happens to me quite often as I'm still a bit hesitant, sometimes.
Kev
Daimo - did I see you earlier on the A2?
Was that last night, possibly? Plodding along.. Where abouts?
In know i was following a Blue pointy today with an Aprovak (?sp) exhaust. Sounded sexual, made me jealous. Damn IL4's and their high revving whiney noise....
Yeah last night - black bandit, new, top box - wearing a silver lid and black textile gear?
Not really plodding well not for me anyway.
Came off at the Dartford Heath turn off - I thought you were from Gravesend?!?!
Ahh nahh not me then, i've got a black/silver bits bash hat, I wear a poncy reflective body cover over black textiles.
Aye I come off at Gravesend E, through all the traffic
Have either of you (Daimo and KRHall) looked into joining the local IAM group? They meet at Brands tonight at 20h00 at the hailwood suite. I've been training with them and I think(touch wood) that my riding has improved a lot.

I haven't thought about it as I'm not too sure what it is although I've heard IAM mentioned a few times on here.
What is it?
How much is it?
How do I sign up?
I think my driving could definitely do with some improvements and tips - it is really starting to annoy me.
Some days I can feel great and drive well and other times I'm RUBBISH - I'm just so inconsistent. The fact that since I've been riding (November) there has never been more than one or two nice-ish days together.
