Anyone got one (and any reasons or not for them) that they want to share?

Just curious following Tomcat's post in the "Deed/Breed" thread, but didn't want to derail.

Personally, I don't really think I have any phobias as such, more, sensible self limitations I suppose. Eg, I'll think twice before abseiling/jumping out of a plane, but if I feel it's reasonably safe to do, it's not something I'm scared of, and I've done quite a lot of stuff like that in the past.

Tomcat, you mentioned snakes. If you ever want to meet a friendly one and you're in my neck of the woods, I've got a baby Royal Python in the lounge (it's maybe 18inch long) :) But I won't introduce you to my mates Mojave rattler, as that's a viscous beast (as I found out last night )

wouldnt have called that a phobia or fear, more a self preservation mechanism :D

can't even stand near one. I was stood in a local pet shop and they had some tiny little grass snake thingys, all the kids were stroking them etc. I didn't like them, can't explain it. I am not generally a nervous person, like you I have a sense of safety, but if roped up will happily abseil etc.

The snake thing I just can't explain, even if I know they are harmless. It makes me wonder if its some sixth sense of a previous life, or previous death!

I understand completely about the hesitation with snakes, especially after last night. Generally there's only one way to conquer a fear/phobia, and that's to SLOWLY challenge it. Of course, some times it's just not possible though.

BTW, my mate asked me to help him out with his rattler, as it hadn't shed properly the last few times & him & his misses was getting a little worried for the things health (they can get diseases if eye-caps don't come off properly etc). So in response to me trying to make sure his snake was healthy (careful now!) etc, namely by pulling it's dead skin off, it decided it didn't like it anymore, and the thing bit me. My own fault really as I was being a bit rough with it, and it's not used to being handled much, let alone by me.

So off I trotted to A&E, and tried to explain that they needed to get some pretty specific anti-venom, and how to use it (not many folks in N Wales have seen a venomous snake), whilst I had lockjaw (amongst other things).

So yes, around THAT snake, I'll be a little more careful in future.

The pre-menstrual thing, I'm not scared, I just make myself scarce ;)

Snakes are fine so are big dogs lions jumping out of planes and stuff.

What gets me worried to the point of projectile vomiting is OLIVES.

The green ones that smell like a tramps soiled underwear.
Yuk, I feel wiered just thinking about them.

I never did like them but I think my brother holding me down and mashing them into my face is what turned a dislike into something far more sever.

I have tried to handle and eat them but I know I would not keep one down if it ever got as far as my mouth. Which one never will as I would fight like an epileptic octopus with edward scissorhand attachments if anybody tried to get one of them evil nasty things near me.

They look and smell like P#ss soaked testicles that have gone rancid.

I did well on the Soho Massive christmas dinner as they were eating them all around me and I wasn't sick on the table.

Gypsy moths... Can't deal with them at all, everything about them's just horrific. They even make a terrible mess when you squash them... The noise they make when they bump into a light, the way they blunder pointlesslessly about most of the time, until they suddenly dive with laser-guided accuracy directly into your ear.

Also heights, but that's just common sense really :)

2 questions. Why would a lion be in a plane in the 1st place, and 2, why would it jump out of a plane?

baph. Just heights in general. Im fine if in a builing that has something to hold on to, but if a mountin ledge, sharp incline, scaffolding type sceanrio or glass floor to celing then im no where near it. I also hate glass floors. Theres glass bits in the floor in Bluewater, and i will not walk over them!!

Needles for me

I think it is connected to when I cut my neck open when I was 10 and had to go to hospital. They gave me a couple of jabs, but I could still feel every stitch that they sowed me up with.

As a result, I also don't like dentists or hospitals . I have not been to a dentist in 20 years, and would now have to be gassed just to get me in the door. My wife has to take the kids to the dentist - if I go, I wait in the car.

Hospitals are not much better - even when I went to see my sister in law with her new baby I felt faint and then had to sit on the floor by a window . I also went to hospital about two months ago with my wife - the doctor merely mentioned blood tests (for my wife!) and I ended up layed out on the doctor's couch

Having said all that, I have suffered with back pain in the past and was seriously considering accupuncture which bizarrely does not worry me :?

It's something we do with our Royal Python all the time, and he enjoys the tickling feeling from it. But then, he get's a bath at least once a week too (yes, in the bath, in our bathroom).

If it wasn't me doing it, it would of been a vet to make sure the animal wasn't suffering, and I'm comfortable around it, so why not eh?

I've milked that very same snake before (which basically means getting the snake pretty angry, and then convincing it to attack a certain point, where the venom runs down some glass & is nicely collected - it's somewhat of an art form).

This all happened, because basically I wasn't giving my mates snake the respect it deserved. My fault entirely. I was holding it's head, just behind the jaws, just not tight enough. My mate was worried that he'd have to have the snake put down because of it (much like the same thing happens with dogs), but to my knowledge, there's no requirement for a venomous snake to be treated like that if it's kept in captivity, and why should it die for my stupidity?

The venom (it's a Mojave rattlesnake btw) is pretty potent, and I'm told that if you get a decent dosage, you'd better not have many things you need to do before you meet your maker. You've literally got about 30mins until you get there! Realistically, with the nip it gave me, and the effects it caused, I got about a half dose.

So yea, looking back, it was a bit mental, but I'd do it again in a heart beat (only hold on tighter next time).

Taking my above posts into account, if anyone feels they want to have a crack at beating their fear of snakes, I'll more than happily introduce them to friendly snakes, ones that I KNOW won't send you to A&E ;)

Seems a lot of folks are scared of them (as is my mum), but really, their ace animals!

EDIT: carlos, I don't have to mention it to mine, but then, I don't keep one. If I kept a venomous snake, maybe, but constrictors they don't care about (yes, I did ask them, better than invalidating the policy when they hear I've been hit by a bus!)

My sister disturbed some adders that were hibernating in her greenhouse. They had crawled in between some stacked pots and were nestling in some old straw. She woke them up when she went to clear out the greenhouse last March, saw and heard these things hissing at her, dropped the pots and ran like hell. The RSPCA came to get rid of the snakes.

TBH Baph I really can't understand why anyone keeps snakes as a 'pet'. I mean, do they purr or wag their tails?

Ed, if you/your sister/anyone close by is feeling brave, approach from behind where their vision is worse, and pin them to the floor, just behind the jaw. Then transfer them to a suitable bag, and withdraw hand quickly sealing the bag tightly (not air tight bag).

Take it off to your nearest forest/woodland (ideally somewhere with running water not too far away too), and release. Easy.

But yes, generally safer (for the snake at least) to involve the RSPCA.

Ed, they're actually incredibly intelligent animals, for what they are (they'd never compete well against the likes of a sign-language talking gorilla though). We bought our snake (well, I did) as the Mrs has always loved Pythons in general, so it was a birthday gift. Its ended up where I'm the one that takes care of it most of the time.

There's just something awesome that can eat something twice the size of it's head, has a lung the entire length of it's body, and, even a just under 2 years old (and 18inches long) , is stronger than I am certainly. But then, I'm talking about a constrictor. The shop we bought it from also said it's not a good climber (constrictors generally aren't) but ours damn well is!

As for my mate, I have no idea why he chose the snake he did, but I suspect it had a similar reason to the Mrs wanting a python.

some one i used to work with had a dire phobia of loose buttons

she would not enter a room if one was on the floor and once some one found a button off her blouse and had left it on her desk while she was talking on phone when it was later spotted the resulting screams where heard across the whole building

and that was only a small 6mm-8mm pearl button not as if it was going to jump up and tear her throat out or inject her with toxic button venom

I'm rubbish with heights.
A few months back, I noticed that the gutter around the top of the house had separated from the downpipe. I went and bought myself a ladder (about £100), climbed up it, and by the time I got to the top, I found I was too scared to let go to fix it. So it's still wrong. And I doubt my ladder will ever get used again. :-)
In Tikal (where I went on my honeymoon), I climbed up to the top of a temple thing (55m - kind of like a ladder strapped to the side of the temple, with a few resting places half way up) - I was fine as I was just looking up. When I got to the top and sat down, I could feel the whole structure moving in the wind (obviously it wasn't...). it took me about 40 mins to get down again, as to get onto the ladder, you basically had to ease yourself over the edge. The guide was a nice chap, very patient, and held each foot and moved it to the next step, until we got to the bottom.

I love all animals. Other than horseshoe crabs which are horrible - like daleks with lots of legs. Spiders and snakes don't bother me in the slightest - got bitten by an adder whilst in Spain when I was about 12 (when trying to catch it...), and strangely enough just managed to avoid getting bitten by a snake last year when I was in France.

Like any phobia, someone who doesn't suffer from it can't see the problem - like me with snakes etc. But it doesn't mean I can climb up a ladder! :-)

Similar to Baphs offer above, if you want to meet a nice friendly puppy, drop me a PM, and we'll see what we can do.....

Of course, afterwards he'd have to chase you and eat you, he likes that sort of thing

(Only joking, if you want to do it, Lupo would be delighted to meet a new friend :D)

Rigor

He'd probably give youy a nasty lick

fear of the dark!! Don't know why maybe a vivid imagination :?

Here's a little song for you:

Iron Maiden, Fear of the Dark (lyrics taken from http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/ironmaiden/fearofthedark.html#12)

I am a man who walks alone
And when I'm walking a dark road
At night or strolling through the park

When the light begins to change
I sometimes feel a little strange
A little anxious when it's dark.

Fear of the dark, fear of the dark
I have constant fear that something's always near
Fear of the dark, fear of the dark
I have a phobia that someone's always there

Have you run your fingers down the wall
And have you felt your neck skin crawl
When you're searching for the light ?
Sometimes when you're scared to take a look
At the corner of the room
You've sensed that something's watching you.

Have you ever been alone at night
Thought you heard footsteps behind
And turned around and no-one's there ?
And as you quicken up your pace
You find it hard to look again
Because you're sure there's someone there

Watching horror films the night before
Debating witches and folklore
The unknown troubles on your mind
Maybe your mind is playing tricks
You sense,and suddenly eyes fix
On dancing shadows from behind.

Fear of the dark, fear of the dark
I have a constant fear that something's always near
Fear of the dark, fear of the dark
I have a phobia that someone's always there.

When I'm walking a dark road
I am a man who walks alone

If you ever want to meet a friendly one and you're in my neck of the woods, I've got a baby Royal Python in the lounge (it's maybe 18inch long) :) But I won't introduce you to my mates Mojave rattler, as that's a viscous beast (as I found out last night )

Spiders-im terrified of them!

Can't stand them myself, but guess who has to get rid of them if the wife finds one! (Little ol me!).

Mind you with five cats in the house, we don't get many spiders or mice or anything else unwanted in our house. :D

Cheers

I have a cat and a kitten, the cat usually brings me rats home (sometimes alive!) and the odd mouse (we live on a farm), ninjas too little to go out hunting yet.

Ahhh, I have Timmy, the old boy at 12 years now, all black and a proper witches cat too, lovely boy with character and a good mouse catcher too!

Next is Tabitha, a lovely tortise shell at a year and a half, sleeping next to the PC at the moment bless her.

Follow that with Scotty, same age as Tabitha (there brother and sister) and he is the "Felix" cat look-a-like from the TV ads and just a naughty too. Sitting on the back of my chair at the moment!

We than have there children Gwen, black and white pattern, a real explorer and a almost white wih a few blotches of black Owen. He is a lot like his father! These two are about four months old.

Would not give them up for anything!

Cheers

When I was about 15 and visiting Russia (school trip) for the first time, the hotel in Moscow served some kind of 'meat in sauce' dish.

'Twas delicious, and after meal we went searching for the menu. My Russian gave up at the first difficult word, so calling in the (excuse the pun) cavalry, with their advanced skills, we soon discovered the mystery ingredient.

Finest Russian Stallion meat in 'sauce'. Now if only they sold it in Tesco, instead of allowing schoolkids to ride the damn stuff around my estate dripping **** (the slipperiest substance known to man) everywhere. Then I'd be a happy man.

I used to think I was scared of snakes, but a few years ago, someone called the Cops 'cos he returned from holidays to find a real, live snake in his bed.
I was sent, took a look and decided to just get on with it. Thick, cut proof gloves on, pillow case, job done!
Turned out to be a rat snake (I think, Baph, about 12 inches, brown?)

Also, despite being a rufty tufty 6"2' inner city Cop  I am petrified of spiders. On a previous page, some s*d posted a pic, I had to zoom past fast whilst shuddering. However, my cat, Conker, eats spiders like that dog, but being a cat, often brings me them as treats to show off what a great hunter she is. Gotta love 'em eh?
