The paint has almost totally flaked off my waterpump cover, I am considering removing it and re-painting it. What sort of paint would be best for both colour match and ease of application? Would it be easier and relatively cheap to buy a new cover, or is the waterpump part of it?
Am I likely to need a replacement gasket?
And finally, where can I get my hands on a set of stainless bolts to hold the cover on?
TIA
Pete

Taking the pump cover off is a bigger job than it looks ... as I found out when I did mine
You would have thought a couple of bolts and it is off ... wrong ... there is a retaining bolt on the inside side of the pump meaning you need to take the whole pump off to get the cover off ... and to get the pump off you need to take the clutch/side cover off ... this technically means a new clutch sidecover gasket (unless you are very lucky).
Long story short, from a hassle point of view, you are better off masking the relevant places and painting in situ!!!
As for paint, I just rubbed mine down, applied a coat of normal spraycan primer and then just a sorta dark gray/metallic black paint that looked close enough. as it is a separate item you can get away with not having a 100% colour match :)
And finally, where can I get my hands on a set of stainless bolts to hold the cover on?

I can't see why he would need to go to the expense of buying another one that needs spraying when he has his own already ;) ... I took mine off, sprayed it and replaced it all on a Sunday ... so its not like bike off the road time is a factor ...
Also if you get a replacement, you will still need to take the engine side cover off to replace it ...
Its an option, but I can't see the logic really ...

If he were to get it powder coated, it would take a couple of day for them to get it done so from a time perspective his bike would be off the road and engine would be exposed for those couple of days, if it were me, i'd buy a spare, get it coated and then spend a couple of hours swapping them over...just my thoughts

Ah yes, I see now, if you use your bike daily and were to get it powdercoated you would probably need the time that spare one would buy you :) If you DIY with aerosol you can do it in a day :)
Unless of course you don't used your bike daily ;)
Oh Hammerite spray is good (not tried on waterpump, but it sticks to anything and it doesn't require an undercoat 8)).
Wasn't there a link posted a while ago with the carbon covers that just stick on??

Wow! thanks guys!
Didn't realise it was such a big job :(
Off the road time isnt really an issue, I only have the bike out at weekends, and only then if its nice n dry ;)
Thanks for the offer though svrash :)
I had thought about Hammerite spray, however the colour seems to be almost a gunmetal grey whereas Hammerite is a flat black, maybe i'll try it.. can always strip it off if it isnt great.
Powder coating would be a bit of a hassle due to having to arrange postage and wait on it. Anyone able to recommend somewhere, in case I change my mind?

Word of warning ... Hammerite is great ... but you can't spray over it with normal paint once it is on ... so you will either have to strip it back to the metal if you change your mind about the colour.
Like I said I just used normal spray on mine, undercoat then dark metallic topcoat and lacquer ... although not exactly the same colour, looks fine and has stayed on for over a year now and looks not to have any signs of coming off again in the near future!! 8)

Given the response to this thread, I would gather that the original Suzuki paint seems to me to be pretty cr@p - i'd prefer to re-paint or powder coat than replace the pump/cover and end up having to go through the whole process again in the future.
I thought this was a one off, but obviously it is quite a common occurence.

<edit>
Just been to chewy's to order bolts.. the sample picture shows an SV with a polished waterpump/housing - might give that a go, along with a coat of lacquer. Any thoughts?

The fork lowers are terrible too ... :D
But I don't think the rest of the bike is too bad??!?! :?

Yep, the fork lowers are TERRIBLE!
I agree though, the rest of the bike is pretty good. I noticed the dog bones are looking very scrappy, however cant be seen unless on your hands and knees
What size of bolts do I require for the waterpump housing? Chewys "Bag D" contains much more than what I need, would be cheaper to buy them seperately.

IIRC they are three differrant length M6 bolts, best bet it to take them out one at a time and measure them. I've used a guy of ebay that sells allen bolts quite cheaply, he does a big mixed bag for about £20, the rest i brought of him individually or in freepost packs of 6-10. PM me and i'll give you the link

I used Chassis Black to respray mine, came out lovely. Then I chipped it through stupidity  Still better than it was. It's easier if you have the black engine since you don't have to worry about colourmatching.
