Not a car chase, but Steve McQueen running from the Germans jumping the fence on that bike at the end of the Great Escape.

I want me one of those...

Audi RS4 IIRC - awesome.

S8... the later 360BHP 4.2V8 Quattro.

With Xenons - unusually for the year the film was made. Pricey option.

Also, interestingly - at one point a few years ago an Audi technician I knew well (used to build engines for the Group B Quattros) told me that there were only 28 bodyshops in Europe allowed to repair crashed A/S8's due to their all-aluminium monococque. That was one of the reasons the insurance was so mental, even on the base model 2.8s.

Ronin or Bullit for proper gritty fast hard driving.

Italian Job or Blues Brothers for scale/flamboyance/wrecked police cars.

Italian Job for best chase music, Get a bloomin move on !

I've not seen the film, but the Steve Mclean (?sp, before my time) one where he's chasing through San Francisco is mean to be the best ever?

Original Italian Job.

2 Fast 2 Furious jsut for the idea of hundreds of modified cars coming out of warehouses and running over police cars (even if the films are as pants as BHS home branded with stains).

I think you need to be educated about the King of Cool, may I suggest you have a watch of the following:

The Gettaway (bonus Ali MacGraw  )
The Sand Pebbles (no cars or bikes, just a cracking film)

Oh come on now people - Bullitt, every time - though I'll grant that if Steve 'Greater God' McQueen had never graced this earth then Ronin would cinch it.

There was a gret 'Homage' to the Bullitt chase done with someone chasing a remote controlled car that was either a bomb or the triggering device for a bomb. Awesomely well done - so good in fact that I can't actually remember the rest of the film of hand!

I'm glad that no-one has mentioned the travesty of a chase sequence that was the Matrix sequel's CGI'd melodrama.

The Bond one (Living Daylights I believe) with the trashed out Renault deserves a mention, as does the Pearce Brosnan 'Bond' bike sequence (though possibly because of the idea of having such a capable pillion  ).

A man of discerning taste obviously! I have both if those on DVD! I love the red Chevy stepside that Ryan O'neill uses at the end when chasing the Firebird - so cool! 8)

I also have "Carquake" with David Carradine (or "Cannonball - not to be confused with Cannonball Run!) on DVD - it gets slated everywhere but the car scenes are worth the watch alone! :D

I was told by a bike copper that he wouldn't do much more than 55 in a 30 with siren on - who's telling porkies? and who's being a little bit dangerous?

Back on topic - definitely Matrix with people jumping on cars to destroy them :D Taking bikes off car transporter (why would it be there in the first place?) etc. etc. Excellent

Wrong.

Still Bullitt.

No, no, no. It's Ronin, The Driver, and thirdly, Vanishing Point. Bullitt was good, no question, but definitely not as good as its iconic status suggests. And anyway, the sound was overdubbed and wasn't that of a Ford Mustang but rather a GT40 (apparently).

As an alternative, and perhaps it doesn't fully qualify as it isn't technically a chase, there is Claude Lelouch's "Rendezvous" from 1976:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcG9IznD_FE

Ferrari 275 GTB, Paris, dawn, and not a single edit, all one take: amazing. This is how all cars should sound. Fabulously politically incorrect, and the better for it.

(9 mins long, don't miss it!)

If you have indeed seen the film then you would have had no need to ask this. Its simple. Trinity decides she needs a bike to get away from those two guys that used to work with Carol Vorderman and the guy on the other end of the phone (not plugged into the matrix) supplies one. Simple as.

BTW. There really is only one car chase to watch. Bullitt. It was the one that started them all off. I don't care if it wasn't the engine of a mustang, (jonboy you spotter!) I don't even know the difference in sound between a mustang and a GT40! Nor do I care. Just a great bit of cinema.

What I do know, from reading the McQueen biography, is that McQueen did all the driving for that scene himself in one take  8)

They where speaking to the director about McQueens driving. He said to Steve "We've run out of film" to which he replied, "Good, I've run out of brakes"

Excellent

Bulitt still holds a specail place, and it is a very close fight with the main case in Ronin, Bu with the better editing, Ronin wins, but only by a smidgen.

Sshhh. Not a fake, just (it turns out) driven in a Mercedes with the Ferrari soundtrack dubbed on afterwards. Hasn't been speeded up, was driven by an unnamed F1 driver of the day, and the producer was arrested (though no charges were ever brought). No matter, it's still stunning, daring, and decidedly dangerous — great stuff!

That's the one. Also between triples and inline 4s :) Plus Infinite Gearbox Syndrome, but most especially it suffers from having the Triumphs getting outrun by a pickup truck. I suppose it'd not have made for a very interesting chase otherwise.

My favourite is when they do the wheelie jousting- The both pin it towards each other for about 6 full seconds, after that time they should have covered over a quarted of a mile and when they hit each other, they'd be going at about 180mph relative :)

Any good bike chases bar T2/Matrix 2? I can't think of any. I'd like to see a Bourne Identity style realistic chase through crowded city streets on bikes. I think it'd look fantastic (really high speed filtering, bumping over kerbs and going along footpaths, etc.)
