I should like to make a proposal for a complementary venue to the Roo, Welsh side of the Bristol Channel

Date: 1st Thursday of every month 7.30pm.

How about one of these

Additional details

The Old Ferry Inn. (http://www.travelpublishing.co.uk/CountryPubsWales/Monmouthshire/CPW23887.htm)

The Castle – Caldicott. (http://www.travelpublishing.co.uk/CountryPubsWales/Monmouthshire/CPW28676.htm)

The Chainbridge (http://www.travelpublishing.co.uk/CountryLivingWales/CardiffandMonmouth/CWA26917.htm)

Once we close the poll we can ring the preferred choice to check our welcome.

Edit

Oh and I dont suppose theres any small chance that this f'ing thread can be kept on topic either. I'm getting a bit fedup with this now. Please make sure the posts are relevant as I've now decided I'm deleting rubbish thats gets posted. If you want to post drivel use the megathread.

I've voted for the Old Ferry Inn but i'm not too bothered as they're all decent places to go. Perhaps we could rotate round the three on a month by month basis. Also, only meeting once a month may not be enough for some people, especially those of us that do shifts, so how about the first and third Thursday of each month starting in February? Just an idea.

Ive voted for that too. I know I'm on the other side but ots the location I would be most likely to get to. If I'm not meant to vote subtract 1 from Old Ferry Inn. If I am out an about I'll go to any. Living outside Bristol theres probably more chance I'll make these from time to time than the Roo where I usually have the car.

Bellerophon - Not a bad idea to rotate them, we may have a problem to ensure that people know where we are going to be. I think we should keep this thread to location only, let's get one meet sorted first before we go for anything else, neither do we want to compete with the Roo.

Rich - Yes, you and all the Mofos are essential to vote on this.

I went for the Old Ferry Inn but liked the look of The Castle too..

To be quite honest I REALLY liked the look or rather the location of The Chainbridge decent twisties on the way there and decent twisties surrounding it.. But it'd be a slog in my car so I went for the Old Ferry

I look forward to meeting up there for the first visit, car or bike I'm planning on being there

I thought the idea was to find somwhere closer to the cardiff area for the welshys to meet? The 2 monmouth pubs which look very nice & would be a good summer meeting point are just as far as the roo according to aa route planner.

So suggest an alternative location then and I'l add it to the poll options.

Although I don't post much anymore i still drop in to see whats going on, I've gone for Chainbridge as it's nearest to me and also in the middle of "twisty heaven".

If it's once a month I should be able to make it now and then but my shifts will determine whether i attend or not. :(

I also know a nice route the Mofos could use to get there.

I'll go looking for some pubs etc on the weekend IF the weathers not as bad as it has been over the past two days.. got my bike back now, so wont be on the Fireblade that I managed to behave myself on in monsoon conditions in the past two days...

But same concern here as Hovis... it'll take me 40 - 45 minutes to get to the Ferry and other pub.. its only another 10 - 15 minutes to the roo for me.... and if I miss my turning off the M4 for Magor services, it would be quicker to get to the Roo then.. :P
Chainbridge would be better, but takes me just as long to get there, though its twisties most of the way instead of dual carriage way...
Could get some of the Biker Wales forum involved ? some of them may be happy to get involved with us lot, as half of us have invaded their forum

the Chainbridge looks nice, but a bit "posh" - would they really welcome a load of hairy-arsed bikers in the middle of summer?

I've been the The Castle in Caldicot a few times - it is nice, the beer's okay and the food likewise.

However, I think that Hovi5 might have a point about somewhere a little closer to "Taffy Centraal", i.e. somewhere on the train route so that beer rather than bike is an option.

If, on the other hand, its a "go by bike" affair the I can think of few places better than The Blue Anchor.......we can do the lanes and "Cow Poo Corner" before stopping there. Might be a bit to far West for Brizzle lot, though.

Both of them would take about 50 mins for me do get to according to the aa which isnt really much closer than the roo

somewhere closer to cardiff would be better

i think that IF peeps want the option to drink OR ride cardiff area will be the best all round as its prob the easiest to get to

this will be a lot futher for the bristol gang if they wanted to come, but we are looking for a place for us welshys. they have the roo,& we can always do both alliteratively in the nicer weather

& as there is 8 of us in wales(that have posted in this thead so i would think we all want somewhere)

im not trying to p1$$ anybody off or anything this is just the way i see it

& as there is now 8 people im sure we can come up with somthing between us all

I’ve clearly misunderstood, I thought we were trying to select a location complementary to the Roo that is in easy striking distance for the Taffys and the Mofos, and that offered really good roads for the summer months.

So here’s the challenge, the location must ..

Be near a railway station.
Have safe parking.
Tolerate hirsute bikers.

Any railway station on the Merthyr/Aberdare line will mean that Hovi5 and I have to travel to Cardiff and back up the Taff Valley and vice versa for VB, Lemmings and Jabba on the Rumney line. Tel, I presume could manage either and so could DeanoN.

I have one suggestion it’s a faux pub, we will have to bring our own atmosphere. (it can’t possibly be worse than The Anchor).

The Barons Court (http://www.pub-explorer.com/southwales/pub/baronscourtpanarth.htm)

It fits the bill. Easy to get to by road and the railway station (Cogan) is walkable, you can easily park, decent roads for playing - in the Vale. It’s a beefeater - tolerate anybody.

We could save the easterly pubs for months without an "R"

What do you think?

Not Merthyr Tydfil

No way am I leaving the by-pass, stopping and getting off my bike in Dodge City.

I will not vote on this as It's unlikely that I'l be a regular in over there in the Winter. But my two pence would be at this time of year go for somewhere central to the people who are likely to be regular. The Brizzle lot don't have to meet you at Cardiff Centraal but can always meet up on the odd day at a pub nearer to the bridge (near Chepstow would get my vote?) then we can all go for a collective blat.

This time of year I'd pick somewhere easy and safe to get to, you can always change it when the weather improves. Have fun and happy voting! :)

to be honest i cant see it possible to find anywhere thats suitable for all to get to by public transport, i do like the odd pint or 2 but personaly for me it would mean a bus then 1 or 2 trains (barons court) as it would for others i guess. so i would simply come on the bike, which i am happy to do

+ i know jabba mentioned a beer but is this what everbody wants ?????

I'm willing to forego the beer and railway line bit....would be nice but not essential.

Mogs suggestion of The Baron's Court is okay with me, and there are other/better pubs with car parks in the immediate vicinity if that general area is acceptable to everyone......The Merrie Harrier springs to mind. We would be welcome there, I'm sure.

Only slightly east of Cardiff and definitely accessible for most of us is the Tredegar Arms in Bassaleg. Its only about 50yds from our usual rideout meeting place..... good parking, decent food, plenty of room and, since its a free house (I think) the beer is always good. This place is "Real Ale Centraal".

Easy to get to for Mogs, VB, Hovi5, Lemmings, anyone from Cardiff/Newport/Barry and not too far west for the good folks from the wrong side of the water.

I'd like to formally propose this as "Taffy Centraal" and have therefore voted "Other".

Perhaps the old ferry would make a good fine weather eve alternative to the Roo for our end when we head off on summer eves. After all its only abou 20 mins out of Brisl and close for anyone working north Brisl. So that one may suit Nick et al as well.

You shouldnt think about Brisl peeps, we will come now and again I'm sure. Having said that somewhere not too far helps, eg. were the Roo south of Bristol I doubt VB would ahve ever come down etc.

But foremost you should choose somewhere handy for yourselves.

I'm more likely to go to The Old Ferry or The Chainbridge. The Blue Anchor is a bit too far for me (wife doesn't understand why I feel the need to go that far just for a drink and a blat!). So is anything else Cardiff way, although I may pop down once or twice

I'm hoping to get to the Roo a bit more this year as well. Shifts / wife permitting!!
