Lanzarote?
Anybody been? Any recommends?
Fancy a week there as a cheap winter break and been told its "nice". Like the fact its supposedly not as built up? Been to GranCanaria before and don't fancy Tenerife.
Most important any motorcycle hire?
Cheers for your thoughts folks

Went there 18 months ago and I really enjoyed myself.
Its not built up due to some idea that none of the buildings are allowed to be 2 storeys high I think.
All to do with some Artist. We went to Puerto Del Carmen.
There isn't an awful lot to do if your looking for action and the shops are full of repetative tat.
Plenty of restuarants and bars.
The volcano trip is one you'll never forget, its like being on another planet.
Weather was good in June.

Tenerife is fab. been three times. then again I like walking and stuff and not sitting on beaches.
What Gran canairia like?
I like tenergrief, but the Los Christianos/Playas are is just to chav for words, and the south other side of the island is too grey! Santa cruz... I still like the island a lot.

Dont know never been. But anywhere north of Los Gigantes then around the edge and along to Puerto is great, especailly up in the hills and the forest coronal. The the north west has a very remote feel for a small island. I never go to the bottom corner of tenerife, although will be staying a couple of nights in Vilaflor next time. What I like about it is theres so many types of landscape there. Dont think Lanzarote is quite as varied. You dont see a lot of tourists at the right time up that way, except finding their way to Loro Parque or on trips up the mountain.
Aye ive been to Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Gran Canaria was full of concrete, same goes for Tenerife. I thought Los Cristianos was considered to be the more upmarket area where Playas was the chav end. When i got there i found that there was little difference between the two. Ill never go back.
Crete on the other hand is a lovely place, nice beaches, good food, good bars (Clubs will be found in the chav resort of Malia) but Stalis comes highly recommended from me if you want to relax or if you want to use it as a base for the rest of the island

Without boring you all... I lived in the Canary Islands for over 4 yrs and flitted between Lanzarote, GC and Tenerife so can tell you far too much about any/all of them.
Like the fact that the Timanfaya National PArk in Lanz cover about 55sq km and is all lava fields and stunning to behold. The volcanoes there raged from 1781-1786. need i go on
lanz is definately the least built up or commercial of the islands, more a families and oldies kind place as opposed to Chav city. Lots of things to do apart from Bars or restaurants and well worth hiring a car to get about the island, especialy if you like beaches that aint full of tourists. Famara is the famous surfing beach there and is only recomended for very strong swimmers or surfers but still nice to go and visit even if you dont go in there but a little further down the coast.
If you do go you MUST go to Jameos Del Agua. Its 2 underground volcanoes joined by an underground lava tunnel and has a creature in it thats found nowhere else in the world. Its also pretty bloody stunning to see too.
Anyway, if you got more specific questions feel free to ask away or PM me :D

And excellent value for a good winter weather destination, whereas a lot of the med isnt, thats the key.
Get a few miles from the resorts and youve got the above, hardly any tourists out of season mainly walkers, cyclists and the like, great real food (go where the locals go etc) and all for not too much.
I'm off for the third time in a bit, still bits I havent walked, driven too, fallen down (caves)

Oh and sun by the sea and snow on the mountain all in one day :D
Anyway, Lazorote.....no, sorry

Great stuff folks, thanks for your efforts. :) Food for thought! We wanna try avoid the nasty bits, but not complete isolation. :)
I admit I may be a bit hasty in writing off Tenrife ( I see you have tried a sucker punch Dr Rich with the twisty road pic eh!  )
If i am honest it will come down to price as to what island we go to and i want to have an idea of where not to go on either island.
Looks like yer pic done it then! I will consider tenerife too.

I wish.
Na we have a house in Victoria Court at Los Cristianos. I say house, its a three bed apartment in a complex. Had it for a few years now.
Pool the works. We love it out there. Mum and dad are always backwards and forwards
I'm off to Tenerife with the family in August...staying at the royal tenerife country club. Looking forward to it...heard good things.
As far as Lanzarote goes...sorry mate, never been :(

Tenerife does have some stunning bits for sure. I remember vividly one afternoon going up to have a BBQ up Mount Teide. And as the sun was setting we all wandered to the edge to watch it...and saw a plane flying below us!!!!
Mount Teide reaches over 3000mtrs at its summit and also casts the largest shadow in the world.
But what was more stunning was seeing nealry the whole archipelago laid out in the sea in front of us from up there.
Avoid the obvious bits like las americas, los christianos, los gigantes etc and you should be fine. I live in a little village called Alcala for a while and i dare any of you to even find it on a map of Tenerife. :D Its that small.
I can also recommend a little place called adeje. The restaurant is cut into the side of the mountain and the views are amazing.
I agree with Dr Rich - I liked Tenerife a lot.
Okay, Playa de las Americas was a touch chavvy, but I really liked Mount Teide and the North side of the island. North and South are completely different. One dry and arrid, the other green and verdant. The black sand takes some adjusting too, though
I thought the Zoo on the North side was excellent, and there's a beautiful drive from South to North if you go clockwise round the western bit. The Eastern side is a bit grim, though.

Away to Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote for a week ,middle of february. :)
Thanks again for the gen. 8)
I've forgot what dry roads look like, and a bit of wind does not bother us if its not accompanied by the horizontal rain!

Very nice!
Try the glass bottomed boat ride... feed the fish like feeding ducks!
Also turtles and flying fish if you are lucky.

Make sure you hire a car for at least a day or 2 and o a tour of the island. Its so cheap and really worthwhile.
Maake sure you visit - Jameos Del Agua, Fundacion Ceasar Manriqe, La Caletta de Famara (that stunning surf beach i mentioned earlier).
Take something warm for the nights as the breeze can be a little more chilly than you expect ;)
have a great time more importantly tho.
Just revisited this thread as I'm off to tenerife on friday.
