I have won a childs helmet today on ebay and paid immediately. Bid price £10.50, p & P listed as free.

The seller has now just sent me a message saying the postage will be £7.00 ..... can he do this ?

Don't sound right to me. If they said P&P was free in advert, then it should be. P&P of £7.50 would have affected the price you were willing to pay? I would have thought you could get a new one from the shop for about the total price they expect you to pay.

exactly. Not even a sorry mate forgot to say or anything. Am not impressed, only bought the thing cos it was so cheap, that has virtually doubled the price. May sit on it a day or two and see what happens

yep, it said free. I thought it odd, but didn't question it because felt that was their problem not mine

I would have thought not, well out of order :o

Even if it is still cheaper than elswhere I would say no way, ain't paying it and post a comment (if you can) accordingly. I don't like people cheating like that and would rather pay more elsewhere than let the them get away with it

Was it 2nd hand? I would be cautious about buying such things 2nd hand.

ok... but do I have to pay for his error? Not a happy bunny about this, feel his approach was rude and if it were me I would just be cross with myself and ensure I didn't do it again.

But, I don't want negative feedback, if I refuse to pay it.

Some sellers do genuine free postage, I've just bought a workshop manual with free p&p. If they made a genuine mistake then they should at least give you the option of dropping out without adverse comment. :)

ok I might play this nicely then, something like. Oh, I have paid already, the postage said free, I don't feel you can do that.

Then if that doesn't work I shall say GET FU**ED T*SSPOT .................. but I want my money back hummmmmmmm

Nah, default's "contact seller for details" or similiar. I mucked up once when I'd listed one item for free posting, then I had another three that should have been about £3 each- I ended up makign a slight loss but i honoured the auction, it was just the right thing to do. Then, I wasn't going to get rich on those auctions anyway :) Did you pay by Paypal? If you did, don't let things drag on- the Paypal protection lapses after a ridiculously short time, shorter than a long resolution takes if you follow the Ebay rules

If this were SV Rider, someone would say "Does the child have a £10 head" and then the gear nazis would pounce :)

yer yer, that not my concern right now, anyway was so cheap thought it would do as a spare if other not available (seem to be living at two houses at the mo so sometimes it gets confusing!) thats why the price seemed good ........................ do take your point on board though

If the postage was set as free in the listing then you should not have to pay anything. Technically its their problem. However from experience I would say you have several options. Firstly you can mutually agree with the seller to retract your bid and them to refund you as it was their mistake not yours. If they are not willing to do this you can put a dispute in with ebay and they should back you 100%. Also if you paid via paypal they have legal obligations to reimburse you too. Any which way you should not be out of pocket.

hope this helps

Was delivery free or was it free collection in person? A lot of people put that on auctions at the moment so it appears free unless you taker a closer look.

well in case anyone is interested! I didn't respond to his very abrupt message about the postage. I now have another from him, polite and admitting he made an error, but still wanting £7 p & p. So I have replied and said that in light of the error, and the fact that I had budgeted to not pay postage, I would goes halves with him. I think that is fair..... See if he does!

Actually, under eBay's own rules, a seller does have the right to changed advertised postage charges by a reasonable amount once the auction is over.

I'm guessing on this bit - but I think it's to cover for instances of incorrect wieghing, price rises by the post office/courier etc. :?

HOWEVER - any changes must be reasonable and must be agreed by both parties. If the buyer does not agree to any changes in P&P then they are fully within their rights to expect the full return of their money from the seller and not to compelte the 'contracted sale'. This will cause no black mark against from eBay - but I honestly don't know the situation regarding whether feedback can still be left ect.

Well he has not agreed to that. But offered a refund. Think I will do that, and put the £17.50 to a new helmet for my one and only 10 year old son. Thanks for the advice :)

Well all resolved very amicably. He sent me a cheque to refund the £10.00, as he suggested if he refunded it back onto e bay I would get charged. Turned out to be a nice guy, shows how things in writing can be understood differently/more abruptly. Thanks for all the advice. :)
