I've been "unemployed" since July when I graduated. I've had a few job offers* here and there but have stuck by my guns to find a job I want and not be driven by money.
I haven't bothered to claim the JSA because I didn't really need it and I REALLY don't like visiting that place. I am however skint and living on pennies but I get by.
I should be employed in the next month and could probably do with claiming for a few weeks just now. Someone mentioned to me that it used to be possible to claim back any allowances that you were entitled to if you didn't claim them (if you're still unemployed). Does anyone know if this is true? If it was then I might bother to get my **** into gear and get along to the local Job office. I should have my P45 about somewhere showing I haven't worked in this tax year and have a graduation certificate.
* - The dole people don't need to know that though.
you would have say what you have been living on since july? i think you can back date it a bit but not sure about 5 months but its worth looking into IMO but you should have signed on in july, i think it is about £50 a week they will want to know why only now you are claiming?

I remember having a conversation with a guy from Uni, mate of a mate, who's big plan once graduated was to spend life on the dole. However it changed once someone pointed out to him that you can't claim anything until you have been unemployed for 6 months.
Not sure how true this is, or if this post is any help at all!
But thats probably how he ended up as he did a degree in CMS
not true.........i think that might applay if you walk out of your job

I never signed on when I was between uni and working, though I should have really. Just seemed a bit cheeky frankly :)
You can sign on straight after finishing uni...i.e. your official course end date has passed. I did. I don't blame you for not wanting to go though, bloody awful places full off viki pollard wannabes
when i got made redundant i signed on straight away...i paid tax for 12 years & i was entitled to it

bloody awful places full off viki pollard wannabes?????
i hope you are never out of work then
I was made redundant in a job years back, and like you insitgator, didn't want to sign on because I hated the idea of it.
Eventually, with a family to support, I was forced to do something about money, so swallowed my "male pride" & went to sign on fir the first time.
The rules, as I remember them, were that if you walk out of your job, you can't claim for 6 months (unless there's other circumstances, like kids etc). If you're sacked, or made redundant, you can claim straight away.
You can also back date your claim without much hassle, but there is a limit, and someone will investigate the claim. Be open & honest, and consider anything you get backdated as good fortune.
The folks that do the paperwork for the JSA in the job centre are actually pretty good. The system is geared to trying to get you back into work, and I've heard of the benefit stopping if you don't accept X job offers that they find for you. In my case, they'd found me the ideal job that fitted perfectly in my "big plan" within around 2 months, I applied, and got it.
If I was out of work now, I still wouldn't want to go back in the Job Centre & say "I'd like to sign on please." Call it male pride if you like.

whats bradford got to do with it?
Look, I went on it, hated going to that place so i got off it and got a job... ok?....clearly we are misunderstanding each other
My comment was directed at the many people in that place who had no intention of getting a job and would go to abuse the staff. There seems to be an abundance of those types in Bradford.
I too payed tax before and during the time i was at uni and was entitled to it.
instigator...apologies if i have caused any offense this site should help (http://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk/JCP/Customers/WorkingAgeBenefits/Jobseekerallowance/index.html)
Claim straight away. If you delay you may lose benefit. To claim JSA, please contact your local Jobcentre Plus office, Jobcentre or social security office.

Then in your case, the system worked ;)
I used to be in bradford from time to time, it's not THAT bad, even during the riots
 :grouphug:
bradford is great

And no bradford is not that bad, it is why I am sitting in my own house, and I have to be thankful for that

I was on the "Bru" as its called up here a few years ago after the company i worked for closed down. When i went in and told them i'd found a job on my own, I got about 400 quid to help with starting work again.. bonus! £200 back to work payment and £200 for clothing/fuel costs.
If you dont want to "go near that place" you wont get anything to help you on your way.. i was glad to get the extra money at the time. Think you can get payments backdated.. dont think it will be a long time though, 6 weeks ish.. not too sure.
You will be very lucky to get a backdate, they fight tooth and nail. After I was sacked from Wrekin I delayed claiming and then tried a back claim. They told me to **** off, so I appealed to the Tribunal, and the Trib told me to **** off too.
About the only litigation I've ever lost :D

My younger daughter got JSA. I think it was about £45/week. OK she also got her rent/rates paid as well. But by the time you have paid for gas/electricity it doesn't leave a huge amount to actually feed/cloth yourself. Her biggest issue, was she had to sign on every fortnight. It cost her £5.20 in bus fare to get to the local job centre.
She kept getting asked why she did not come to the office more often to look at what was available. The staff did not seem to think it unreasonable to expect somebody to walk 12 miles in the hope that that day there might be something there and threatened to cancel her entitlement.
Greg,
Go and sign on - I don't like the places either but they are the best people to talk to. Though be honest with them. They will want to know what savings you have so be warned. If you have lived off your saving for the past few months then you might not get it backdated as at that time you may not have been elgible. Just ask them what you need to do and say you've been told you can back date the claim.
You won't get anything for rent coz of your domestic situ unless you've moved out since i was last down.
If nothing else it gets your NI paid while sigining on. When they go on about jobs - tell that you are looking and you have had offers but reasons have stopped accepting them - not enough money is not a good one- The guys I had once they realised I'd been to Uni left me to it as they said that there would be nothing for me in the job centre. As long as you can prove that you are looking that the main thing. Jst remember you can work up to 16hrs and still claim IIRC so you can get part time and get benefits and get them off your back.
You're entitled to as much as the next person
Sign on.
As said, the way i see it, i fork out silly money per month on tax, it'll only go to some pikey council people who will never work anyway, so get back some of that what shoudl be rightfully yours anyway
Only downer is you have to stand in the jobcenter place for a little while.
As many have said already "go and sign On".
Agreed the thought of going in etc is not good, but you have paid your tax's etc its right you should get some help.
I found that the nicer more willing and more open and honest you are with the staff the better you get treated. They can if they want put you on extra benefits that you might not know about and they only will if you treat them with respect (which i know you will). They are there to help so use it.
Hope the right job comes up soon.

Someone mentioned to me that it used to be possible to claim back any allowances that you were entitled to if you didn't claim them (if you're still unemployed). Does anyone know if this is true? .
You can plead your case, but I - like you didnt think I'd be unemployed so long and didnt claim until November, and I tried to backdate it to September but they decided it wasnt a good enough reason and I didnt get it. However, acceptance is quick, and money arrives in your account quicklly too...good luck. Its defo worth getting it...
