That's typical ... after pretty static share value and selling them at the highest they have been for a year ... they the dropped shortly after I sold mine me thinking I had done well ...
Today I check up on share price (just out of interest) and they are 7.25p higher value per share than when I sold mine
They are now at a record highest ... that equates to £125 I have lost (or could have made extra) for the sake of a few days ... like I said the highest ever and a massive sudden jump ... (the company has got the prospect of new contracts coming in that has only been disclosed now and worth £millions) ... TYPICAL
You dabble in stocks & shares, you take your chances.
Anything over what you initially invested is good. Always worth waiting a few days after an initial drop, as the market in general bounces so much. Some people (like you did) sell as soon as it's a 'record high', then when it drops, other people buy. Sometimes the drop continues, but slower than initial, sometimes it goes up.
If you look at it like you've lost £125 for every stock decision you make, you would die from the stress if you play the markets often.
me thinking I had done well ...
You did do well, so what is there to regret?

I am still 'up' ... these shares were down at 40p less than what I sold them for at one point! 8)
FYI These shares have seen a fair bit of movement initially, then stabalised for about the last 2 months, they stayed ~6p +-2p less than what I sold mine for ages ... they went up to ~0.2p more than I sold mine, then dipped again ... then rose again .... it was on the 2nd upward rise I sold mine ;) ... I judged it well I thought as they dipped again soon after (they did go 0.2p higher than I sold mine before dipping, but that is pretty close) ... so all was well .... bearing in mind performance over the year, I figured I had done ok .... then this new contract and all time high came into play sending them shooting up again

I sold my bank shares at what seemed an unreasonably high 1110... And then they went up to 1170 :( But you can't complain, as long as you don't make a loss, really. I was glad to be shot of them...

These didn't make a massive profit, but I am 'up'. :)
Blue, so you didn't impulse sell. I was wrong to generalise, my apologies
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I'm assuming the company you had shares in has an employee share program?
Stable for months, then fluctuations resulting in a high, just before an announcement. A slight dip as people sell just before the announcement, then a massive rise.
Or am I just too skeptical about employee shares programmes?
Anyhow, you were up, maybe not a lot, but you were up all the same. So yea, you did do well, and should look at the missed money as part of the risk you didn't take. You could of also lost a lot more.

...
I sold as it had proved to be a fairly 'dead' investment ... and they were showing a value now that was over what I got them at ... with recent performance, I would get more return from a simple savings account/ISA than they were showing to give ... however the sods law bit has been that this turn of events has shown that in <1 week I could have made the same as a year in an ISA!!
But to be fair I was not going to re-invest anyway ... either in shares OR savings ... ;)
Yes the company does have an employee share scheme, but even together they hold <3%* of the overall shares, so the influence is minimal ...
*It might be smaller than that, can't remember the exact figure.
I got signed over a load of Abby National shares.
I keep meaning to research into it to see how much they were worth and how much they are worth now  Free money, woooooo

I like this site for following share prices
http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/q/cq?d=v1&s=+%5eFTSE+%40UKX.L
View share ownership one of 2 ways, long term investment or short term gambling. Both can work, or not!
Long term can be less of a gamble, look at the price history (charts) of a lot of companies on the Yahoo site and you'll see a good safe long term trend over 5 or 10years. Day to day is a different ballgame.
It was one of the American magnates (Rockefeller??) who when asked what his secret of success was, replied "Sell too soon". In other words, don't hang out for what might happen tomorrow, if you are "gambling", i.e. buying/selling to make a fast buck, then set the margin at which you'll sell, 3% or whatever, and stick to it.
Best investment I made was buying Natwest at 303p about 15yrs ago, now (as RBOS) they are £20 a go. I also bought Sun Alliance (now RSA)..................

A little tip for the future.
When you sell off shares, do not check their value ever again.
My dad continued to do this when he took out £20,000 in shares to buy a Toyota Supra. Couple of years down the line they would have been worth double that and boy o boy did he tell everyone more than once. Made himself depressed. :x

Is that good? Bad?
£64.35 each? Or £6.43, or very nicley £643.50?
Im not sure if it was 100 or 1000 I have? Got them signed over to me by mother as a "moving out present." She got them when Abby stopped being a building society i think?

That will be value in Pence.
So you have £643.50 or £6435 worth of shares ... I'd check if it was 100 or 1000 if I was you ;)
It'll be the lower, it always is :(
