could be anything, guitar solo, drums, whatever, what record would you say has the most recognisable intro to it, one that whether they be a fan of that artist or not would know it...

my vote goes to.....

Strangliers - Golden Brown

(with honourable mention to Guns and Roses Sweet Child, altho my Mum wouldn't know who sunged it....)

Amanda M

Metallica - For Whom the Bell Tolls has a pretty recognisable intro

think i may have to disagree with the chain. definately a very recognisable end, bbc grand prix theme music, but the intro...not so sure.

I reckon, Back in Black. But Killing in the Name's instantly recognisable if you know it. DURRRR-DURRRR DURRRR-DURRRR...

I personally completely disagree there. There any many more innovative and versatile bands, they're just not always good or mainstream enough to come to the attention of most people.

As for the topic, err, probably White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane (was it airplane?) I reckon most will have heard it and will then turn to me and ask what it is.

A mate of mine was at a RATM gig in Christiana, in Copenhagen. Christiana is a sort of fortified island in the center of Copenhagen, that was occupied by hippies and anarchists in the 60s or something and now claims to be its own country, cops dont really go there, and most people grow weed in their front gardens.

So, Rage set up the gig, the local plod doned their riot gear, stormed the island and total pandemonium ensued with water cannons etc while the band played their set, delighted with them selves.

According to my mate, if you are ever going to be in a massive pitched riot, having Rage Against the Machine play soundtrack is more or less as much as you could ask.

He didn't mention one genre. I like Queen and I think you'd have a very hard time tying me down to one genre, but I could (and have) talk(ed) for hours about the various stuff I do like.

I like Queen... Never really liked the singles till I heard Innuendo. Bananas... THough I agree that most people who reckon they're queen fans have the greatest hits albums and no more, they contain most of the rubbish and they miss a lot of the best stuff. Like I'm In Love With My Car.

According to my mate, if you are ever going to be in a massive pitched riot, having Rage Against the Machine play soundtrack is more or less as much as you could ask.

Seen the film Straneg Days? There's a quality riot in that with Skunk Anansie playing the soundtrack :)

I would have to say, (as others before me have) that Stairway to Heaven is probably one of the most recognisable. THere have been enough covers (novelty of otherwise) to introduce it to subsequent generations.

However I'm pretty sure if you played it to a group of 13 year olds the majority of them would be none the wiser.

I would also suggest that somthing like "Live and let die" by Wings.
Again lots of covers introducing to different generations and groups etc.

Plus I think most people would know it as "The theme to that bond film" if nothing else.

****EDIT******

I imagine most people would be able to recognise the main "Bond" theme from the first bar too.
