Getting itchy feet, and since winter hasn't really happened, I think I'm going to book this:

http://www.focusedevents.com/event_details.asp?eid=648

Brands Indy
Saturday 3rd March <- Still plenty of time to get a little warmer and you don't need a day off work!
£119

Anyone game?

Thanks
Luke

EDIT: Going to book this tomorrow as there is no-one in the office at the moment and I have a voucher

I'd like to do a track day soon but it'l be my first so can anyone tell me what the minimum requiements are? i.e clothing / bike alterations?

cheers

Usually the organisers will provide this, but the standard is that you need full leathers (two piece zip together is ok), ACU gold sticker helmet. Bike has to be in decent condition, sump bolt done up tight, decent state of tyres etc.

My modifications to the bike are remove reg plate, unbolt mirrors, remove fuses for lights and tape up headlights.

More here. https://www.focusedevents.com/terms.asp

It's a bit intimidating at first, so make sure you take it easy. Speak to the instructors, they are great. Make sure you keep yourself fed and watered so you don't get tired, and a plastic petrol can is useful.

thanks Thor, so do u remove the fuse for the brake light aswell? I know race bikes don't have brake lights but was thinkin if i'm a novice and braking a lot earlier than others it might be best if they had a brake light to give em a bit more warning...?

It's down to personal choice really. Some remove wing mirrors, others fold them in. Tape over lights, number plates etc. The only thing the organisers have said is tape over you speedo, so you're not tempted to look to see how fast you're going.

As for brake lights - Don't give 2 thoughts as to what is going on behind you - just concentrate on what's ahead - Let the guy behind you worry about when you're going to brake!

Snett is cheap, but if I have to ride there on the morning, then I rather it was a bit warmer still. Booking a B&B + petrol doesn't make it such a cheap deal

Brands on the other hand, is only about 25 miles for me

Brands is 100 miles for me, Snett is 200 miles ... if I wasn't prepared to travel then I'd never do trackdays as they are all too far!! :D Apart from being an awesome track, the only reason I can justify doing tracks like Cadders (which is even further still!!), is that the entry fees are normally lower than southern tracks ... so although more fuel, this is offset but entry cost ... so basically then way I look at it, wherever I go a trackday costs about the same in total, but it's nice to have a bit of variation!! ;)

BTW for me it's not Snett OR Brands I am considering, its Snett AND Brands 8)

I don't mind the distance - just not when it's f***ing cold! Snetterton is on my list of tracks for this year, but maybe more towards the summer.

EDIT: Just noticed looking on the map, my step-grandparents live in Thetford and they are long overdue a visit! Hmmmm :-k

Well quite, its much nicer when you have a nice warm and cosey van to travel up in - it may be an old battered piece of s***, but at least it has a heater!! :D

Chunky - Bearing in mind my bike is probably only good for ~130 (and it's not going to get there very fast :D), I have to say I am not sure how frustrating Snett is going to be on the SV!? , but hey, I have actually grown to love the circuit and if I race the SV, would probably do one there!! 8)

If you put yourself in inters then that's where I would go too, we could always move about as the day progresses. But my experience of inters is that the level of ability in the group varies so much that it could get frustrating real quick, especially at a track like snett where we (well me even more than you ;)) are bound to get annihilated down the straights by the 600s and Thous and then they will pull in front and park it for the corner :D which if you are trying to 'get your thing on' is annoying after a while to say the least ... at least SOME of the people in the fast group might have actually cleared off by the time we get there?!? ;)

Bear in mind i'm a shade over 20stone the extra power isnt going to be a huge advantage i rekon.

I did snett on my mintwin when it had styandard suspension front and back!!!! now that was interesting

I agree about the grouping but last time i did a TD with FE at snett the slowest guy in the fast group was doing 14's

You are right at 20st I'll be able to slip stream nicely!! ;)

 You had a fast day there, I have been in fast groups at Snetterton a few times and most of the people were probably in 1:20s-1:30 (or less, well more :D), there was only a handful of us in the sub 1:20s, certainly sub 1:14s …

Anyhoo, if we do get a fast day and everyone else is doing 1:14s then they should be generally clear, not wobblers … I don’t care about the rest of them … as far as I am concerned it is me-v-you fella!! ;) … See if you can convince Sarah to go too 8) {slams a PAIR of gauntlets down!!} :D

Nope dont think sarah will do it. she's got trips to ascari as such like to practice on as opposed to deepest darkest norfolk.

If the fast lot are doing 20's-30's then i'll deffo ask to go up. bear in mind the fact it's 2 weeks before bemsee starts though so i'd bet there will be a few racers out there(and i suppose that'll include me aswell :? )

Not only do you have Croft on your doorstep, but Cadwell is ~140 miles from you, as is Oulton, ... Knockhill and Mallory are about 150-160 too ... so not only do you have Croft on your doorstep, but you have some of the most exhilarating tracks in the UK with a 150 miles radius ...

I have Brands 100 miles, Silverstone 120 ... the next nearest is 200 miles!! The problem with Brands is that it is stupidly expensive (in season)!! And to be fair ... a little boring after a while ;)

There are plenty of minor tracks up north too that I didn't even mention ;)

The only other well know track that is within 100miles of me is Thruxton, but they don't do trackdays there (well perhaps 1 or 2 a year, but that is it).

Hovi5 - Llandow is really good VFM, never been there but looked into it once ... if you get 30 odd ppl together then it works out at ~£100 a day* even in the summer and that is open pitlane (i.e. come and go as you please)

*I can't remember the exact figures/numbers, but it was good VFM.

Pembrey is a fun little track, been there a few times 8) Its got a really nice beach out the back too ... nice for a summer BBQ 8) ... the Welsh are really friendly too ... I was shopping for supplies late night on my way to Pembrey one time ... I had this person follow me round the store for a bit ... I thought they were following me to see if I was gonna nick something ... but then they came up and asked if I was ok had a smile on their face and asked what was I looking for??? ... this wasn't lip-service, they genuinely wanted to help and were genuinely happy ... that's a strange concept round here!! :D

But yes, you have to travel a bit boy-o if you want to visit any of the big name tracks ;)

I'd say if it is on the BSB calender it could be considered a big name track ...

Ok, Ok, the chances of me booking on sooner rather than later just got significantly higher 8)

I have a +1 … this dude is my x-team-mate from way back ... his main track bike now is a 996, second bike SP1 (for when the 996 breaks down!!) … we both love ‘the rock’ but haven’t been there for like 6 years … oh my ... it is gonna get messy out there!! :D

Are you up for a bit of Rockingham??

How did you get on at Snett? :)

No point going to rockingham tbh. for the same moeny i could get a day at a circuit i am actually racing at. That and the fact i've been there soo many times before i'm a little bit bored of it.

Got on well at snett though. was ****ing it down most of the day so had a right laugh taking far to many liberties with the wets finding out what they are capable of.

Somehow he's convinced a mechanic friend of ours to take his engine to bits. Mechanic reckons he'll be up til midnight doing it!

I'd much rather another SV man carving it up than an R6 geezer! He he he.

Not unless you're doing the race weekend you cant.

Why not? Its not like they ever double check you are racing there ... (or at least they never have in the past ;)). Places like Lydden might be a bit tough to get it by, but Snett and brands etc that are owned by MSV? and you book with them direct I can’t see a crosscheck being done?!!? ;)

Besides many times you will only get your entry form through 3 days before the actual race … so its not like you can confirm if you are deffo racing or not if you book your practice a few weeks in advance ;)

Bemsee practise days are booked and run by bemsee and not the circuit owners so yes they can check;)

Must be a new thing … it never used to be like that … many of the days were booked direct with the track; BEMSEE had nothing to do with it (other than have the day allocated). :?

To be fair it may have been booked through BEMSEE for the past few years and I’d never have know any diff … think the last practice day I did was in 2002 … I never needed practice, I was that good*!!! 8)

*Ok when you are on as tight a budget as I was, you can’t afford practice so just turn up and race is more the case!! :D

Just got in - f*** me, I am exhausted! Pretty good day. All kept it shiny side up. Got there at 7:00 to get a garage and was the only one there! Weather had been showers/spitting the whole way there, though by the briefing it had stopped, the track was still pretty damp.

1st session/sighting laps absolutely sucked. Probably because I didn't know the track + we were the first out so there was no drying line yet, but the bike felt like it was going to disappear from under me - especially around paddock hill bend. Considered sitting out the next session until it had dried a bit, but was glad I didn't. Every session got drier and by the one before lunch - it was sunny! Probably my best session of the day as well.

an excellent day, the weather came good, damp track first session, mostly dry line second session, fully dry thereafter :-) I didn't crash, which is becoming something of a habit, clearly need to be braver/stupider. luke timed me on a 1:01 lap in the 3rd session, I was faster in the 4th, so I'm going to claim a 1:00

good to see luke again, didn't get a chance to speak to teriakimonkey

was chatting to a couple of guys in the adjacent garage ( 18 ) who were going to be doing the gixxer cup. one of them (sorry mate, forgot your name) had just bought an SV so I directed him to here. say hello if you read this :-)

Right, I better book onto Rockingham tomorrow then :)

If you were doing 60s laps under trackday conditions, then you would be able to tag onto the back of the clubman minitwins pack 4 sure:-

 (http://www.mylaps.com/results/newResults.jsp?id=217384)

You would however need to drop a few more secs to tag onto the back of a Dyna-Pro minitwin pack ...

Not long woken up after getting in. Excellent day. Miserable start and only had one hour sleep last night due to nerves. I am a wimp.

I done all of the sessions and apart from a slight detour over the grass due to someone cutting me up and finishing midway through the last session (I survived!) I done all the other sessions. I was as slow as slow can be but gradually improved. I measured my chicken strips disappearing on my new tyres (bit twitchy) and even got my toe down on the last session! Tyres got all bobbly too. I got to love paddock and druids-especially druids as I could feel it coming together there. Who'd have thought that one day I couldn't do right handers? I liked the lightness at the back of the bike from braking for paddock. Silly thing, but I found braking hard for Graham Hill bend hard after a few sessions. I got an instructor out with me who put me straight on my terrible braking and who also got a complete moron moved up to intermediate from our group. He must've cut me up 6 or 7 times and the other people I was with had seen him being a fool too.

All in all it was a good day. The R1 with us spat out half of it's oil at the very end of a session as he was coming into the pit lane. That's what I call lucky. The people there were excellent. Friendly and very helpful. I got some advise about weighting the outside peg and it made a huge difference. I found the whole experience better organised and safer than Cadwell Park. I'm afraid I succumbed to getting the 30 quid photo CD although they definitely didn't get my best moments ;). I'll find a good one and put it on tinterweb.

There was a downer put on it though. On the way back one of our gang who'd just passed his test and came up with us to watch came off. I pooped my pants when I came round the corner and saw the bike on it's side smoking. Luckily he was ok but his bike is definitely a write-off. I think he froze and got the bike standing up on a very tight slip road off of the M25. He said it just wouldn't lean. The bike hit a barrier support and snapped it. It brought it all back down to Earth with a hefty thump. His lid did a very good job. Poor fella.

Was nice to meet Luke. I'd have talked more if I could've found his garage! I did see him on track in a blurry, getting overtaken fashion. Didn't realise there was another from here there.

I'm definitely up for another. Mates want to do Silverstone GP although I think it'll be too fast for me. Any thoughts?

P.S. Why do I look like and feel like I have windburn? I ache.

I love Silverstone GP, there is no such thing as 'too fast for you' ... just put yourself in the appropriate group, as you probably gathered form Brands, there is always someone else out there that is a noob too. :) I got some onbord videos of Silverstone GP that will give you a 'heads up' on where the track goes :study: :) I want to do a couple of other tracks to 'mix it up' a bit, but happy to do Silverstone GP again, so if/when you wanna go, then give us a shout. This is gonna start hurting my wallet.
