Personal preference I have the front strap over my seat, middle one underneath the tail unit and the rear under the pillion seat (between seat and unit)

Oh sorry, am I sounding bossy!

Mine are the oxford 1st something or other panniers, they have 3 straps, one under the pillion seat, and two over. Then i did 2 straps onto the grab rail, and two straps onto the pillion foot pegs. Dunno if that's correct, but it worked! Bungi underneath it all, very stable

I used to put the pillion seat back on, and the straps as suggested by tomcat; with liberal use of the bungies it all stayed solidly in place. This was to avoid scratching the seat cowl and to keep the weight that little bit lower down.

This was a curvy yellow svs with Oxford hump back panniers, not sure it would work on any other colour :)

I can't imagine scratches being such a problem, with it being yellow !
Must admit I usually ride with a seat cowl, but also put the pillion seat back on for same reasons :smt023

No! Put the straps round your own legs, just be careful to undo them when you get off

Yeah, I wouldn't do that myself ;)

My plan is to get a spare passenger seat and build a simple rack for it, then bolt the panniers to it- protects the paint, keeps it secure, and no change of them falling off. But that's a bit extreme...

Keep the straps like that over your seat cowl and you can kiss goodbye to the finish on your cowl mate!

Perhaps worth getting some sort of materia to protect the paintwork.

That's about how mine used to sit, and you can see from your photograph why I used to put the pillion seat on in place of the cowl. I've got hard panniers on the Triumph much quicker to get on and off.

Am no expert but I think they look ok...? Maybe a bit high, but if you bungi underneath it may pull them in a little at the bottom which could help

Im thinking that putting the rear seat & pillion pegs BACK on would be better when using the panniers, (AR 07) but then on the ride out with the panniers off it wont look as nice

I agree, what a dilemma, decisions decisions, wouldn't life be easier without them ....... decisions, not panniers, life would be difficult without panniers ... oh but without panniers you would have one less decision, so maybe it WOULD be easier without panniers ................ oh god ...... This is why I've got a tail pack. Its much easier and also it doesnt make your bike wider so its easier to filter through narrower gaps

Oh no not another decision, mmmmm how will you carry your tent? and you will need the fitments off the seat back on the cowl which means you need all your tools as well, too much for them poxy panniers, you need a goldwing :)

You only need one spanner to do both though, if you use the right bolts ;) I originally planned to do that last year, but when it came down to it I just couldn't be bothered.

Here are mine:

Oxford jobs with 3 straps, front and back on top, middle under the standard pillion cushion, front straps tp pillion pegs, back straps to bars under the pillion unit, bungee from the back of the panniers and looped round the grab rail, bungee from panniers completely undert the rear end. No movement what so ever so you can keep up with Kwak 636s on the passes!

Used copious amounts of duck tape to cover the rear paint (with pretreatment of applying to my jeans to stop it being too sticky!) followed by one of those rubbery mesh things to stop it all sliding about. Sounds like a lot of hassle but once you've done it a couple of times becomes a 5 min job. Just watch the end of the straps that have to go through eyelets, they can become pretty frayed turning into a nightmare, nothing a little melting doesn't fix.

Ah... it brings a tear to my eye, I really miss that bike...... but I love the replacement

If you refit the pegs and seat unit for a ride when you're using the panniers it will look OK (...for a scruffy yella one  ). The pegs also have hooks that you could tie the bags to. Keeps em very stable.

Or get a bungee eyelet welded to your can hanger.

If you're that bothered about looks but a harley, they look better with panniers. At the end of the day a bike's for riding, as long as everything is secure who cares what kit looks like, I just want a good ride!

I have the Oxford 1st (I think, the small ones).

I run the middle and rear straps under the seat, the front across the fron of the seat. Then I use the eyelets on the bags to run bungess under my number plate light side to side and under the tail (behind the rear pegs iirc) for the front eyelets.

Sits absolutely solid and is easy to attach / remove at either end of the journey. (Mind you only do 120kmphs as I don't want another ticket...)
